: LED vs. halogen comparison video

A few months ago when I was upgrading my lights I made a video showing how much faster LED's illuminate because I found some people who thought they are just a cosmetic mod. When you see them side-by-side you really notice the difference and can realize how much safer they are when it comes to brake lights. And of course there are much more reliable which is another safety benefit.

Just as an experiment I tried uploading this video to google, along with a couple videos of drunk girls in bikinis for good measure. For some reason the LED video wasn't "approved" until now. But the videos of the drunk girls were approved almost instantly. Go figure.

So anyway if you want to see the video just click the link in my signature and it's on that page.

The led seems to be sharper. What was your total $ in doing this conversion? This is something I would like to do.

Don't know about idealrides, but I got all my stuff here. Good quality and customer service. Very happy with them. http://autolumination.com/

to get the video link just click the link in my signature and it's listed there.

the cost for each pair of lights was $20 for the tower bulbs plus $5 for resistors. So about $50 total.

One more question, did you get the red or clear LEDs?

Any help on resistor install? I wanna get some LED turns but I know if I dont have resistors I will have that fast blinker problem :( Is it an easy wire up?

This is the link in my signature: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2262810

Since our lenses are already red you should get red bulbs for maximum brightness. For resistor install help, check out the instruction here: http://autolumination.com/images/leds/installation.jpg

By the way, the price is about $20 per bulb, not per pair! My mistake.

idealrides don't know how you got this gig (live on an awesome party island and have an nice ride) but more power to you!

question on the LEDs:
-how many actual LEDs are there on the bulb you bought?
-is it a wide or a narrow angle LED?
-better yet can you just post a link to the actual bulb you bought?

much appreciate your wisdom.

The bulbs I'm using are the 18-LED version, which have only 3 LED's on the end of the bulb. There is also a 20-LED version which has 5 LED's on the end but is otherwise the same. I went with the 18-LED version because I didn't want there to be a visual hotspot in the middle of the lens shining in the eyes of people behind you. In other words, I wanted a more uniform factory-like illumination of the lens, at the expense of a little more brightness.

Because the LED's on these "tower" bulbs are mounted at different angles all over the bulb, the output is very wide, it completely illuminates the entire lens better than any other bulb I've seen.

You can find the tower bulbs at the top of THIS PAGE. (http://autolumination.com/3157_3156.htm) The exact item is listed as "3157 dual circuit" (pick Red of course) and you just have to decide on the 18-LED or 20-LED version.

thanks idealrides. why not go with all LEDs not just the turn signal?

FYI, here is a good link with FAQ for anyone who might be interested in switching to LEDs:

http://www.superbrightleds.com/carbulb-notes.htm

These guys have bulbs with a few LEDs pointing sideways (http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/3156_57_specs.htm) to illuminate the whole reflector for about $8 ea.

that picture was just to show a comparison to the stock bulb. I changed just about every bulb on the car to LED, except the reverse lamps which I changed to 50 watt quartz bulbs. :D

I have the LED's also, I have the brake LED's that flash if you nail the breaks 20 times before going soild like on the Benz's, under normal braking they illuminate solid, my signals are also Red LED's but my reverse LED's are super white when I back up I lite up my entire rear end. You will have to install load equalizers for the signal LED's or they wont flicker on and off.
