: Few runs with a tuned Evo X MR

Thought I’d post my fun from the weekend up on here just for fun and to serve as a potential warning for stock / lightly modded rigs that these cars are no typical rice joke!
The very day I traded in my SRT Charger for this unit my best bud by total coincidence went out and bought a new 08 Evo X with the MR package and fancy transmission (figures right).
The thing is actually pretty nice, not quite my style but if certainly has some nice features and is well equipped as a track / sports car that is all wheel drive and can go to the ski hill in the winter in reasonable matter. I realize the Jeep is in a totally different league luxury class / options / purpose wise and all and I am not trying to compare the two.

Anyways… we ran a few times when we were both 100% stock and there was very little competition. From a stop the Jeep would get it by a few cars till 80ish (mph). From a 60-120ish roll it was about the same outcome. His car weighs in around 3500lbs so its no lightweight. Stock numbers are around 300/300. They are all wheel drive and have 3 different launch methods. Regular, sport (rpm’s held around 3,000), and super sport launch control that holds the rpm’s up around 5,000 at all times.

A little while ago he picked up a tuner for his car that’s sort of similar to the Pred and it came with a few predetermined / canned tunes. He was saying it really helped the launch and he would have something for me now so I agreed to give him another run at it. This time I had the 93 canned tune and 4” Bwoody CAI. The outcome was much different! First run we did from a stop I didn’t give him enough credit (due to last time out) and was sleeping a touch on the light with no break torque at all. I got out to about a fender lead was all – and by about 50ish he was pulling ahead!!! He was using the SS mode and launching up around 5,000 rpm’s but damn!!! By 120ish we shut down and he was about a car and a half in front. No longer pulling and if anything I was about to start creeping back.

Next light. This time I am ready for action and knew if I was going to have any chance I needed at least a full truck length on him out of the hole. This time I hit the light and break torqued her up to about 1,500. I got the one truck length but just barley. The rest of the run was similar but we were able to go a bit longer. He matched me by about 105-110, passed me by about a car-ish to around 125, and then he fell off a bit and I was coming back to even again at 140ish. We shut down but I would have expected to put maybe a car or two on him from there till one of us was out of juice one way or another (governor / out of gear / power)
The entire run we were no more than about a car length apart!

Next up was supposed to be a 50-60ish roll on but we never got the chance. That seemed to be the weaker point for both of us.

There were no passengers in either vehicle and we were both running the same 94 octane from Husky up here.

Anywho… anyone had any fun with these guys? I suspect my buddies to be very close in the ¼ mile as my Jeep is now, maybe a tenth or two slower tops but a few mph faster for sure. Problem is he now has an exhaust set up on order which is supposed to be good for another 30-40 awhp on these things with the tune! I’m screwed! I’ll need a proper CMR and then some I think!

You may have a little better outcome down closer to sea level. I know our 6.1’s get the **** kicked out of them a lot more than boosted cars up here from the altitude.

Could be partly gearing but what sort of real top end can one possibly expect from a 2.0 liter engine no matter how much boost she it pumping!

UPDATE:

No new runs with the Evo but he is in the process of installing his new exhaust system. (cat back and cat deletes)

I finally got my unit out to the track to get some base close to stock numbers…
Canned 93 tune and 4” Bwoody @ 2300 feet above sea level.
DA was about 3000 feet for the majority of the runs.
I ran consistent 13.6’s all night at 100-101mph on 1.93-1.98 60ft’s.
This was in full stock trim including stock kicker subwoofer and around a half tank of fuel.

Judging by how close the runs with the Evo were I would guess his is right in at a 13.6-13.8 quarter at prob 103-104ish.
He plans to get out to the track also in the next few weeks (with his new exhaust set up which is supposed to help quite a bit as well).
I need a custom tune fast if I want to stay on par!!

Ive always heard the Evo's were more of a top end car compared with STI's and the such. STI's launch hard where the Evo's really dominate on the top end...just my 2 cents.

Not sure if they are geared better or have more up top than the STi’s but they have a hell of a lot more power up top than I would have expected from this car. Like I say – they are right there with us even at 100mph!

You need a CMR tune and I dont really know of many if any members that get better times jacking it up on a stock converter. Thhis you should get you on top again :D
