I always did that with my vehicles. 500 miles and a fresh oil change.

I always change oil for the first time at 1000 miles, then the second time at 3000 miles, then every 3000 miles.

I asked the service manager at my dealership about this, and he said (1) there's no break in oil, (2) he said wait till 3k miles. Won't hurt anything to change it earlier, but it isn't necessary.

I have heard that when breaking in an engine, it is good to change oil soon. I was told to do this because sometimes shavings, dirt, etc are in the engine right off of the factory line, and you never know, some guy may have put his McDonalds sandwich in there. I think its just an ease of mind imo. My dad is just now hitting about 300 on his '10

That's what the oil filter is for.

I think it pays to switch to the synthetic oils. I picked Mobil 1. It's good up to 10000 miles. Personally I change it at 5000-6000 miles.:)

I hope we all are as that's what my owners manual says.

My first oil change was @700 miles. Haven't needed to do another 1 yet but it'll probably be at 3500 mile intervals. It's cheap insurance.

It's required if you don't want the dealership to give you issues down the road. It says so on your oil cap.

if these were standard jeeps or hemi 5.7 I'd say yes. But the 6.1 are not built like the others they are hand built with performance components and tested. I just changed the oil in m 2010 srt8 jeep at 1500 hundred cuz the oil was spent and for no other reason.

Use what the factory recommends, for the 2010 is penz. 5w40 European formula. It's in the owners manual and it what they sell at the dealership.

My 2010 SRT8 built on March 9, 2010 has the Mobil 1 requirement on the oil cap...Are there ones with the Penzoil cap?

I haven't seen any penzoil caps, but I got my paper srt8 owners manual and it states 5w40 penzoil full syn european formula. I'm sure shortly they will have new filler caps out with the new oil on them.

You can use what ever oil you want, I'm going to start running royal purple race oil 10w40

Just did the first oil change at 1600 and it was black. Definitely a good idea to change it early.

Do you think the manual is more accurate then the cap? Mine lists diferent engine sizes so it doesn't seem specific to the SRT8. The cap calls for Mobile 1 0w-40 but the manual calls for 5w-40. Think there's a big difference?

Great Forum.

I noticed that as well on my 2010. This is the first time I have seen a new vehicles firmware indicate a break in oil change required. Perhaps their warranty analysis pressed this or more than likely trying to capture early service revenue.

I had mine changed by the dealer at 500 miles. They were flipping out saying i didn't need to do it that early, that break in oil doesn't exist on these. The first oil change was free, that's why i did it early. and after that i will do it myself anyway.
After i got home from the dealer, i checked their work and they overfilled it by a quart!! I had to jack it up and drain the extra quart myself.
This is why i don't like anyone working on my cars..

It is a great group, man. What color is your Jeep? Maybe I'll see you around. I live in Woodbridge. Mine is a black '07 with "MOVE OVER===>" on the windshield.
