woke up this morning (saturday) & it was a beautiful day in northern va. i decided to take my 14 year old son to the track with me so he could ride shotgun during some 1/4 mile blasts.
we got to the track at 12 noon (mason-dixon in boonsboro md.) and watched the last few rounds of JR. drags. we signed up for the street elimination class (prize money-bracket racing) that was starting at 2:00.
2:00 starting time came & we were very excited (his first time at a drag strip). the first class was super e.t., then motorcycles, then our class (street series).
after about 10 pairs of super e.t. cars ran it started drizzling and they shut down the racing on & off, until it steadily drizzled and had to stop alltogether.
finally around 3:30, after dealing with drizzle delays, our class was called up to the staging lanes (the motorcycles never got to run). as soon as we lined up it started drizzling and we were delayed again. at 4:15 the track was dried & as soon as the announcer got on the loud speaker to tell us it was time to race, it started drizzling again. at 5:00 they called off racing for the day.
both of us were pretty bummed. we spent 5 hours at the track & didn't even get one run in.
the only bright moment was when we lined up in the staging lanes. a newer pontiac trans am was our opposition for the first practice timed run. the driver of the trans am was a younger guy (17-18) and the first words out of his mouth when he got out of his car & saw us sitting next to him were, "oh no, i have to race an SUV.", "please don't beat me, i'll never hear the end of it from my friends.". i told him, we will have to see how it goes but i couldn't promise anything.
i was so hoping it would clear up just to see his face after the race but the weather didn't cooperate.
at least i have a rain check & will try again next saturday.
