: Racing our 5.7 cousins???
2007GCSRT8 04-26-2007, 11:46 AM So how often do you guys have a 5.7 Jeep, maggie, 300, charger, ram...that pulls up next to you not knowing what s/he is about to get into? I'm sure you guys have some good stories.
I'm guilty of looking for it...but it has yet to happen (a race not sex. It always seems to be the 50 year old lady in the Jeep that I pull up next to. I really want to get one of the 5.7 charger guys. I always see them with the 2 racing stripes....
No fun for me I guess!
HoustonSRT-8 04-26-2007, 12:10 PM I hardly get anyone to race me ever, regardless of what they are driving. I did get to play with a 300C SRT-8 on the freeway once, though. I couldn't keep up. :(
QBNKID 04-26-2007, 12:32 PM At the track I'm tired of racing against all the SRT8 types, and always loose on heads up, no big surprise there, but on bracket racing is a different story. On the street I wouldn't even think of it if I'm next to one, unless I really wanted to embarrased myself really bad, or wanted the SRT8 to look really good.

I don't get the "races". I thought a race was bring what you got and fastest time wins. If not...some guy sandbags in the initial runs and/or it all comes down to who is quicker off the line. I'm confused....
QBNKID 04-26-2007, 01:38 PM I don't get the "races". ... I'm confused....
There's two type of races, the heads-up which is what you have in mind.
And then there's bracket racing which is a handicap race where the slower car gets a head start determined by the difference in seconds both cars have displayed on their windows known as "the dial-in". For example you have a dial-in of 13.3 and I have a dial-in of 14.3 that means I'll be getting the green light 1 full second before you. That means that if we both have the same reaction time r/t and we both run our exact dial ins then we would have a tie when we cross the finish line, which I have never seen or heard of that happening.
In another words bracket racing is for everyone to have a chance at winning regardless who's car is faster.
What really comes down to play is what driver has the better reaction time, who runs the closest to their dial-ins without going faster, if you do go faster its called a brake-out and you loose, in case both brake-out the one with the least amount for braking out wins.
Also the car you are driving in brackets should be very consistant every time otherwise that can really mess up your dial-ins and loose beacause of it. There's a lot more to bracket racing but that is pretty much the basics.
I hope that helps understand it better.
Edit:
...I thought a race was bring what you got and fastest time wins. If not...some guy sandbags in the initial runs and/or it all comes down to who is quicker off the line...
If that was the case racetracks wouldn't be making any money, because most of the time you already know what the guy next to you runs in his car so why bother in a race that you already know you would loose or win. It would be too boring after a while, this way there's a fair chance for everyone to win.
But don't get me wrong heads-up races are as important and exiting but the racetracks get better results having both types. For what I've seen usually theirs more people on the brackets than the heads up.
2007GCSRT8 04-26-2007, 01:51 PM That makes sense. My main question WAS what stops a guy from sandbagging in the qualifying runs. But you answered that.
Is it fair to say that someone should not win these types of races everytime out, week after week? It seems like a race where there are going to be multiple winners throughout the year. Kind of a way for the slower guy to feel better and have a chance at winning?

The one with the greatest overall accuracy and less mistakes would win.
See, it sounds too easy here, you should try to experience it sometime.

It really is fun. I had the pleasure if winning my lane out a week ago at Sac Raceway. When I was at Infineon there were some guys there that could get consistant .0** reaction times, and the funny thing was one he was in a 3500 Dodge Ram Van.

Congrats on the win... it is really fun. First time I raced at a drag strip was in Nov of '05 and ever since I've been hooked into it.
It could be a nice hobie, everytime I go I always learn something new and so far it has been a great experience.
Yeah last time I went I was very consistant also with my reaction times, I was getting .033 to .095 on 4 or 5 runs and 1 elimination run at .1**.
Mango 04-26-2007, 05:04 PM I get R/T cars running me ALL the time here in the Dirty Jersey. Usually they are good guys and give me the thumbs up after. I also gave respect to some nicely modded R/T's around here. Made some new friends. :)
Derwood98 04-26-2007, 05:25 PM I actually had a 5.7 limited think I was some punk with shiny wheels try to race me on the way home from work this evening. Little did he know what was under the hood. I guess the wife must have kept him preocupied at the dealer so he didn't know what an SRT8 was. :D
Derwood98 04-26-2007, 05:26 PM Oh yeah, one more thing. The service manager at the local Jeep dealer said the Grand Cherokee is the fastest of all the SRT8 lines. Can anyone confirm?

Fastest? No.
whiskey 04-26-2007, 05:39 PM its faster.... to about 80mph. The LX SRT will pass the Cherokee at that point, and due to the aerodynamic and gearing differences, will never look back.

MOTV8D 04-27-2007, 12:56 AM I had the chance to have fun with a SRT10. The guy didn't know there was such a thing as a SRT8 Jeep. I was able to beat him stoplight to stoplight 3 times in a row and then we did a 120 mph blast on the highway and we ran neck and neck. Up here in Alaska I have seen 1-300 SRT8, 1-SRT8 Charger, 1-SRT6, and tons of SRT4's. I am sure someone has an SRT8 Magnum, but I have yet to see one.
I am guessing that the Jeep SRT8 may be the most popular up here based on the AWD system. I purchased my Jeep strickly as a winter rig. I drive my Lighting all summer  , I am still holding out hope SVT will make an AWD vehicle.

Did you get a chance to see the look on his face after? I bet that was priceless.
I bet the 5.7 guys (not familiar with SRT) are looking for that 5.7 badge on the back, otherwise they think it is a laredo.

Why would anyone believe it's a Laredo if it doesn't have a 5.7L badge, otherwise they would have gotten that nice mean looking Laredo instead, most likely they just know what it is and want to see the beast in action, they are just instigating and looking to get one for themselves.
I just can't picture why anyone (familiar with SRT or not, auto enthusiast or not) would think of the SRT8 as a Laredo, looks alone on the SRT has "faster than you" written all over.

2007GCSRT8 04-27-2007, 07:44 AM I really don't think that many people know what SRT is. As many others have said...everywhere I go it seems like people ask what kind of Jeep that is, I like what you have done to it and so on.
The reason people would think laredo or small V8...they don't know what an SRT is and they assume the 5.7 is the fastest, they don't see the 5.7 badge and they want to beat someone with nice rims or something. I'm not trying to argue with you, those are just my thoughts based on the amount of Jeep owners that don't know about SRT.

It's too bad Ford discontinued the program for the SVT Sport Trac they had planned. 390hp, AWD & a 6-spd manual would have been fun. :D

No worries, not trying to argue either I was just giving my opinion on the subject as I put at the bottom of my last post m2c (my 2 cents).

I have a lot of respect of the 5.7. When I was test driving the SRT8 the salesman hit the nail on the head, in my opinion. He said the 5.7 is the perfect overall combination of speed, comfort, styling and utility.
So we use my wife's 5.7 on road trips, hauling things, when the baby is with us and so on. So I can't dog it since there is one in my garage. :)

I can second that, because when I am at the track I have a ton of people come up and ask "what is that thing?". One guy actually thought it was a 4.7L
on the bottle, until he looked at the engine compartment. I think a lot of people don't even know DCX makes a 6.1L V8.

Hope to see that beast around sometime!!
That is what makes this SUV so much fun,, Not alot of people understand what is under the hood.. lots of people just think its a flashy custom version of the standard GC... Geeze I want one!! LOL:D
rocca 05-12-2007, 08:11 AM I agree with QBNKID. Some people may not know what a SRT is but if someone pulls along side you in a Jeep, Chrysler or Dodge there is a pretty good chance they do. They may have chosen their particular model for reasons other than speed. I know I chose the 5.7 GC Limited for the towing package and the 4x4 ability but that does not stop me from wanting to plant the pedal whenever a sports car of any kind pulls along side (win or lose).

In the 1/4 mile I don't think you can really pick a winner among the SRT8 vehicles (Jeep/300C/Charger/Magnum). If you compare the numbers from multiple track slips from multiple owners you'll find "faster" and "slower" results for each of the four models. Taking averages, they are all amazingly close, too close to pick a particular "winner".
FastJeepSRT8 05-13-2007, 10:45 PM I've had fun with one 5.7 Limited since I've had my SRT8. The kid looked really confused as I blew by him roasting him off the line. Once I was in front of him, about 1.5 sec later, he got a great big grin on his face. I raced several with my 5.9 Limited when I had it and those were much more fun! Imagine the anticipation these guy's must have had when an old 1998 JGC pulled up next to their brand new Jeep with a 5.7L HEMI and started reving on them. I remember one guy caught me at the next light and said "what the hell just happened?" The best story I have though involved a 19 year old salesman from a local Jeep dealer. I went to test drive the new Jeep HEMI when they first came out. Needless to say after I drove it I was thoroughly disappointed. This kid kept insisting that the Hemi had to be quicker than my 5.9L due to the higher hp rating of the HEMI. I kept telling him it felt slower and I wasn't going to shell out 38K for a slower Jeep. He finally got tired of arguing with me and offered to take his Jeep off the lot and race me just to prove the HEMI was faster so I would buy it. So I agreed to race only if he would take 4K off the HEMI Sport RAM my wife was eyeballing after I kicked his butt. We pulled out and dogged it to the first light. When the light changed I killed him off the line and pulled on him the whole way. When we got back to the dealership he said he had to check to make sure he grabed the HEMI and not the V6. Then he started telling everyone at the dealership how my Jeep with 96K miles beat the new HEMI Jeep. Since it was late and they were closing I told Dan I would stop by in couple of days so he could work me a deal on the RAM. When I went back on Monday they told me he had been fired. Gee I wonder why? My SRT8 is a lot faster but my 5.9 was a much better sleeper in it's day.

Did you ever took the niner to the 1/4 mile track?
If you did, what did it ran?
What mods you had done to it?

Never took it to the track but I did check my 0-60 times best I could with a stop watch and my right foot. Before mods I was running to 60 in about 6.5 to 6.8 sec. After mods, K&N cold air kit and Mopar performance chip, I was hitting 60 around 5.8 to 6 flat and I seemed to have a lot more kick from 60 to 100 after the chip. I did record a couple of 5.5 sec times but I'm not sure how accurate my method was. The Performance ECU took about 6 months to break in completely and was the best of the two mods. It was a great truck and I'm kind of ticked that I got rid of it. There was more hp to be had if I had done some more mods.

Yeah I know, a friend of mine was running 13.5 with his and it was N/A, but with LOTS of work done to the motor.
One thing I haven't check on mine is 0-60.
BTW, you didn't have an exhaust too?
I've been wanting to run at the track with a niner and/or a 4.7 HO, either or with same mods as I have, there has been much debates on other borads on whats faster in the 1/4 mile out of those three because they are supposed to be very close. And of course the ZJ guys like you think is the NINER, the WJ guys like my wife and other friends think is the HO and personally I think is the WK, so to know for sure wether I win or loose a track meet with the 3 jeep generations would be great, no matter what at the end of the day the winner will be a jeep GC.

Too true. Most people (dealers, salesmen, shop guys, etc) always as if the body kit was dealer installed or if I did it and if it's got a Hemi. I say yeah a big one:D

I never got around to doing the exhaust. I think the stock cat-back ran pretty good. As for the three generations of JGC you just mentioned I'd have to give the nod to the 5.9 ZJ in a stock situation. As far as mods for the WK, I'm not sure what is out there for the 5.7 so I couldn't say. All I know is that until the SRT8 came out I never lost a race to any other JGC, HO or otherwise. In fact the 4.7 HO's IMO were incredibly weak compared to my 5.9L. Here's something to make you think. I used to frequent the Jeepsunlimited forum years ago and there was a guy on there with a "96 JGC that he droped a 360 crate motor into. He threw a blower on it, exhaust, tuned it and droped some weight on it and was running 12.8 1/4's @ 109mph. He posted a video of him smoking a Vet. I think DC really downplayed the 5.9 Limited probably due to demographics. I used to read about 0-60 times of 7.5 and 15 sec 1/4's from DC and mine never ran that slow. In fact I believe C&D did a road test of the 5.9 and was shocked at how much better their test vehicle performed over what DC was claiming. All in all the 5.9 ZJ was a great Jeep in it's day and I think it still comands a certain amount of respect even from us SRT guys since you never know what might have been done under the hood.

True, I agree... the niner was definitely downplayed by DC, even the DC advertised HP/Tq was not the same after it was dynoed by others.
I also frequent jeepsunlimited, mostly the WK and speedfreaks forums, the little I know about the ZJs I learned it there.
On stock form, like you said the niner should be the fastest, I've seen 14.8 bone stock numbers when I couldn't go any faster than 15.2 with my WK bone stock, but after my mods I've gone as fast as 14.3 but my avergae now is a 14.7, I still would like a run with a ZJ and see what I can do.
But can't wait to get the SRT8, I'm sure it'll be night and day going from the 5.7L to the 6.1L.
