So I went to pick up my truck from the car wash yesterday and there were some nice white paint streaks on my driver's mirror cap. Does anyone know if the caps are replaceable and what the costs/part numbers are? The closest dealership said the whole mirror assembly needed to be replaced, which can't be right since the cap and mirror look like different pieces.

Thanks -

Matt

Based on your story, it sounds like the car wash owes you big time!

Heh, well they'll owe me big time if the whole mirror needs to be replaced! If it's just the cap that can be swapped, I'll buy it myself and they'll owe me a few washes. They're good guys and mistakes happen, but that really sucked seeing white paint on my red truck! Not good!

no caps...sell as whole mirror. Why not just have it painted?

I would email the folks at chryslerpartsdirect.com. Although the online catalog only shows 'mirror switch' meaning the only part on the official catalog is that part (no mirrors or caps), i have ordered lots of non-stock stuff from them at great prices (like the intake snorkel, brake scoop, etc.) that you cannot find on their site. They are quick to respond too.

in lieu of that, there are companies that sell mirror cap overlays (fit exactly over the mirror cap) with plenty of finishes, including carbon fiber. if you have a black jeep, CF might not look bad.

So, even if you HAVE to replace mirrors, the website shown has alot better prices than a stealership.

Thanks for the help guys. I used some rubbing compound and some 3M swirl remover, then some touch up paint (the bottle now comes with a cool pen on the top to fill in the scratches.) With a coat of wax you can't even tell.

The touch up paint is matched to your VIN and costs $12. Good thing too because Inferno and Red Rock look similar when they're in a bottle.

If anyone ever has to replace the mirrors, y'all were right in that they only come in complete units from the dealership, and they're $235 driver and $185 passenger, presumably since the driver's is auto-dimming making it more $$.

even if you could just buy caps, they might have to be painted...?

Just a warning, I've read about a guy who took his Jeep through the car wash and all four of his rims got a serious case of rash because of the "guard rail" tire guides. Avoid a car wash if you can IMO. I personally use the Mr. Clean gun that filters the rinse water - and leaves no spots after air drying. Glad you got off easy though by being able to rub it out.

Ironically this was a hand-wash place in the basement of our office complex. The guys were looking at the back-up camera when they cranked the wheel and kissed the wall with the mirror. Imagine if they would have scraped the fender...that would have been a real mess. They ended up giving me 5 free car washes and promised to be more careful. Maybe I'll bubble wrap the mirrors next time :)
