: Fire extinguisher? Do you carry one?

So on the way to work today I witnessed a car fire, fully engaged, on the highway. So it got me thinking....an automobile suitable fire extinguisher might not be a bad thing to carry with me. Can anyone recommend a good unit to have?

I found this one, Auto5FX Kidde...for $20 it seems like great "insurance"

You know-- that's a great reminder. I've always had them in past vehicles, but don't have one in the Jeep. Storage is just so limited, but that shouldn't be an excuse. I don't want to drill to mount one in the pillars, but I should find a place to keep one.

If you don't use them, it seems like the net that the VES headphones sit in might be a decent spot.

I can see a new market for GCSRT accessories along with this fake fire extinguisher:
Fake jack and spare tire;
Fake tow hitch;
and the Fake transmission dipstick.

I should send you mine..... Saudi requires that all new cars have one installed on the passenger side. On my Jeep they built a braket for holding the fire ext. but my wife hated it.... being where she likes to keep her purse. The Mazda we bought, they actually drilled holes and used a carpet knife to cut the carpet... grrr... still have yet to get that fixed up properly. The braket is still good but the little plastic cover covering the gauge broke. Currently I have the fire thingy in the back in one of the storage compartments.

Mango I would go for the little bigger Model KG/FA10- Kitchen/Garage Fire Extinguisher That is what I carry in my GC and Truck.
Fits perfectly in the little cubby hole over the right wheel well with the net
on it. it has a 10 rating on B&C which is oil gas and electrical twice the effectiveness of that 5 rated your looking at.

Forget the internet why pay shipping when you can get at walmart lowes
ace hardware, for about the same price they are costly to ship because it is a pressurized container.

My2 cents:D

I have always kept a fire extinguisher in all the cars or trucks that I have owned.I keep mine right behind me on the floor.I saved some kids Camaro one time that had a fire under his dash.Never know when someday you might be able to save a life.Good Luck.

Same Here always have carried one in my vehicles too, Put out a fire for someone in a Dodge neon once and used the extinguisher another time to
break out the window of a flipped over truck so the people could get out.
So I guess they can be useful in more ways than one.
Thankfully never had to put out anything of my own (knock wood) :D

A few days after a got my SRT8 I was driving by my friend's business and his office was on fire. It was put out after a few minutes without too much damage but anyway later that day I stopped by a boat store and found a small extinguisher that fits inside that jack compartment and there's a velcro strap that holds it down tight. Haven't touched it since but it's nice to know it's there.

You guys might want to consider getting this extinguisher bracket from an Explorer. Mine is a 2002, 3rd gen. This came factory. I love it because it is at arms length incase of an emergency. You must act quick if a fire breaks out.

I just took this pic and I didn't move my seat back. I have plenty of foot space and I don't even know its there when im driving. Its a very handy foot rest also.

This reminds me I gotta go get it checked...

Wow, I just lost a lot of respect for the designers at Ford for fitting an extinguisher thats blocks use of the floor mat hook! Could even be a bit dangerous because now the mat could interfere with the gas pedal. Shame on Ford :)

The right top of the mat is cut out so the pedal can not interfere.... even if you slide the mat all the way to the top and all the way to the right, the cut out never lets the pedal hit the mat.

Make sure you find a sand box fast to put out your fire...

I gotta go along with ideal here...If that is factory, Bauer or not, I don't get it. What does top right fitting or sliding it all the way to top have to do with it as shown in pic?

It does not, at least in pic, look like you can slide it "rearward" enough to have the hole/loop in the mat, easily, if at all, fit over the retaining hook.

Also, I have a hard time believing that in this time of "instant litigation" that Ford, particularly after their Pinto fire issues, would do anything that might allow somone in our "sue" happy society get an opportunity to start hollering.....it was empty, it didn't work....I couldn't get the clip undone etc.

Finally, if it is Eddie Bauer at least they could have given you a nice chrome or red one.....

And don't forget where ideal lives......he's probably never more than a quarter mile from just driving it into the sea..:D

All im saying is that looking it a from a "safety" stand point there is no way the pedal can get stuck because of the mat. But there's one small difference here, I bought mine in Cancun Mexico and is a Mexican version car. BUT it was assembled in the USA, so maybe the ones that were shipped to Mexico, were more concerned about ones safety rather than a pity law suit. Or maybe when it makes it to the Mexico dealer, they equip them there. It MIGHT be a law in Mexico. My dad's Mexican Altima and Tracker have one, he bought them both brand new.

But as you can see, Fords "design" was "designed" for the hook, other wise the mat would not have a hole and the hook would no be on the floor in the first place. So its not a "design" flaw as stated earlier. It seems more like the US shipped the car with the mat on the hook and the local dealer equipped the fire extinguisher. Besides, I think Ford's Truck/SUV "design" department pretty much speak's on their own (sales).

I think Explorer just finally lost to a Honda, but it seems to be gas prices to blame.

And what Ford has been up to with some later designs, I don't particularly like either.

But standing from this position about law suits or sue happy as you stated, if one must go there....

As the prosecutor faces the jury, "Poor little Timmy's death could have been spared if Jeep would had designed and equipped the vehicle with a fire extinguisher in the first place. Its common sense that heat and electrical sparks don't mix well when exposed to flammable liquids, so how can ANY manufacture that is taking on the responsibility of building a product that is a potential fire hazard, at least equip ALL their vehicles with a fire extinguisher, is beyond me. But, unfortunately, tragedies as this always have to happen first for laws to pass. So please, if there can be any good that can come out of poor little Timmy's death, let it be to protect and spare any future lives".

And I mean this for all manufactures.... including Ford.

Finally, if it is Eddie Bauer at least they could have given you a nice chrome or red one.....
At least I got one ;)

Now your onto something... :)

Just thought I would give a helping hand on ideas. I would just make sure you mount yours in "sitting reach" lengths, or at least in the back. Or your ride could end up looking like my buddy's Volvo... Let me tell you that he was not very happy after desperately looking for a fire extinguisher, and coming short. He even popped his trunk hoping to find one. His child seat was fried. I'm sure if his child was in the car, the first thing he would have done is remove her from the vehicle, but still, under panic, one can never assume what will happen next. I have always been a strong believer in never leaving anything to chance. The manufacture should at least give you options for protection under THEIR potentially fire hazard product. This fire was due to a FACTORY turbo failing, the car had only about 20k on it.

I was very surprised to learn that even Volvo, one of the leaders in safety, didn't even come equipped with one.

My friend said he could have probably saved the car, he first noticed the hood bubbling when he started looking for the fire extinguisher. Yeah its easy to say, well thats why I pay insurance. But remember insurance is not going to bring back a lost life. This can also easily cause the gas tank to explode and expose a surrounding public for injury. Some insurance companies don't cover the THOUSANDS and thousands of money's one has invested in upgrades. Mine covers my rims and stuff, but not my 15k+ I have sitting under my hood, not to mention all the time. I'm not saying that in 100% of the times a fire extinguisher will save your ride or a life, or even an injury, but gosh damb, at least give me a gun if your sending me to war!!!

This is not meant towards you str8.

I don't like this "design" for the simple fact a kid throwing a tantrum, a kid, an adult, or uncaring passengers can break the fire extinguisher lever on both of these designs.

My cousin is a firefighter in Connecticut and we were talking about vehicle fires and he said Volvos are by far the most frequent vehicle he sees on fire.

He also was telling me about a housewife that was getting gas for the mower and the jerrycan spilled in the back of her Explorer while driving home. She pulled into the garage to clean it up with the "wet dry vac" and somehow it ignited and burned down half the house. Darwin award candidate?
