: heads, cam and problems.
tommy25000 04-22-2007, 05:08 PM Im nervous i want to pull the trigger, but heads and a cam = alot of $$$$ for a slower truck!
so far I think i have read of one guy who ran low 12's everyone else or so it seems is pissed!
WTF is going on. ive read about the truck retarding timing...
so is it safe to say only B&G can tune these trucks? well could they make a program to counter our truck thinking its knocking? are they able to make custom programs??? so if there is no custom tune or fix it would seem that heads and a cam becomes too much of a gamble for me... im not going to void my warranty and go slow for almost $4,000 installed!
i was hoping people who know and people who have been there would ost so we could all see the pros and cons. thanks guys.
Inferno SRT8 04-22-2007, 05:12 PM Dynamic Racing Heads and cam are proven already by bevsjeepsrt8.
JTSRT 04-22-2007, 05:24 PM I'm getting heads, cam, intake package done in Delaware, not sure if anyone else on here has anything done by highhorseperformance or not; BUT I'm gonna run some pre #'s at englishtown and then give it to them on 5-21, break it in and get some post #'s so I'll be sure to put them up.

what cam did bev use... and i know bev's jeep took to it well. but what about grip grip and the others??

Some place in Germany claims they can get 450 HP with a chip. Click on Grand Cherokee chip tuning.
Anyone speak German?

Apparently you're high as well. Spreckenzie English?
Hows2nd 04-22-2007, 07:51 PM Mark ran his 12.2 with no B&G tune in his 2006 JGC SRT8
How's his drive ability though.... I haven’t seen him post for awhile maybe he can chime in on daily driving. I would think without tuning with a head and cam swap it would have issues. I though you were going this route awhile back.

I was but decided to try and get more out of the engine stock with a tune (crosses fingers). Im going to upgrade my torque converter soon and try and pull more out of the tranny.
As I said on another thread a buddy of mine seen the test mules run low 12's in 80-90 degree Michigan heat so there is alot of power hidden in our PCM's, just have to figure out how to wake the engine up fully.

gotcha maybe you can have Mark chime in on this topic...:)
tommy25000 04-22-2007, 09:56 PM so is it all 2007's with the problems??? as far as these topics go?????????

No, bevs and grip's are 06's
tommy25000 04-22-2007, 10:36 PM ok got ya... is grip grip still having problems?????? has anyone with an 07 had these problems? is it safe to say that th knock problem is equaly hurrt both 06 and 07
generalconfusion 04-22-2007, 11:06 PM I stated this in another thread and I will state it on this one as well......I hate to tell you guys this......these "generic" tunes are great for changing shift points......some more timing.....idle....and now the infamous Torque Management during WOT so the engines and trannies last forever. B&G has a good generic performance tune that works........to a point!
Bottom line when you start changing valve timing (overlap/duration) via bigger camshafts......the all important vacuum signal or HG curve these ECU's are preprogrammed to "SEE" that also affect important sensors that affect overall driveability, no longer see the values required. You would be better off with a cam with more lift.....maybe some minor increase in duration/overlap but you need to consider what the affects will be on changing the Volumetric Efficiency curve and the changes to the Manifold Pressure Sensor and air flow sensors. Those preprogrammed tables are seeing fluctuations and the system is trying to overcompensate in either direction to keep HC, CO and NOx in predetermined/preprogrammed check.
The camshaft may also be exceeding the injector duty cycle......have you dynoed ON THE SAME DYNO.... EACH TIME (who cares about the BIG BRAG number) and measured to make sure you are at least seeing a 12.7:1 a/f ratio?
Again, I keep stating.......learn from the motorcycle and rice burners..and GM guys.....without a custom ECU or emulator.... or lap top access to the program so it can be run...observed...documented real time...and tuned or modified real time on a dyno or at the track (if you have the money and luxury of running it that many times with a qualified knowledgable tuner)......to see "real time" running conditions and make the required adjustments, you will never see full potential and will have driveability issues........with all due respect B&G is kind of making hit and miss changes on cammed vehicles.........I do like their tune and believe they (B&G) can only modify so much, and as we have all heard DCX has proprietary "tables", especially Federal emission tables we are not going to have access to for a very long time.
I'll say it again.......I'm glad you guys are the "Pioneers".....seriously you would be better off building a 6.4 with the 6.1 cam than doing what you guys are doing with cam swaps!
PS: I think alot of you are getting hung up on the times that respected members run at tracks located in the US that have ideal weather and sea level conditions.....heck I'm jealous of those times...... but unless California builds a track 33' or lower at sea level and it drops to 30 degrees I'm willing to accept correction factors.....

Great post Confusion!
The generic B&G tune is not the answer to most issues other than raising idle speed or rev limits. This is why I am looking at going to totally new user programmable electronics which means I will have to ship my 426 across country and have it disassembled to exchange the crankshaft wheel and sensor. Huge expense on top of everything else.
Talk about pioneering!!

panajeep 04-23-2007, 07:40 AM tony please , call mark or send a pm like me , he going to tell you that day he run 12.2 has h/c and b&g ......
tommy25000 04-23-2007, 04:16 PM ok ive made up my mind... im not doing heads and a cam anymore. i just wont risk it. im going to buy another toy tomorrow.... the new honda CBR 600RR in white. :D

Do tell more about this Federal Emission table.
Is it a Federal law or parameter?
I'm thinking if somehow it's tied in to a federal regulation maybe the Freedom of Information Act could apply?
I'm not a Attorney just a laptop tuner that can't see much good to the BG piggyback tune.
Somehow I'm gonna stuff a 6.1/426 Whipple Blown engine in this GC and make it all work.
Chatted with someone from BG today all I got was no to all my questions.
Jeff
tommy25000 04-24-2007, 05:07 PM so is it safe to say that only doing heads would not create some of these problems we have seen with the heads, cam package????
tainui 04-24-2007, 05:50 PM Save your money for the bike. I have the truck, blown 12psi mustang, zx-12, and zx-10 for the track. Dollar for dollar the bike wins the wow factor hands down everytime.

Just curious didnt you also try the head/cam set up? What was your impression?
