: High Speed Handling
stang99x 03-09-2010, 03:08 PM Anyone notice that at high speeds the handling is less than tame? I had noticed before at excessive speed (125 or so) and just shrugged it off because I was going so fast. But on the interstate on the way home this past weeking, I noticed when I did a little slingshot pass goin from 80-roughly 100 the Jeep wanted to cross the equivalent of Rhode Island while all I wanted was one lane. Curious as if anyone else notices this. I can do 100+ in my Mark VIII and change lanes like I was doin 25 but the Jeep requires alot more attention during high speed movement.
Now that I got that out, feel free to flame away
own 2 SRT8 03-09-2010, 03:19 PM center of gravity is a little higher. As with any high speed driving, you should allways be prepared (I am aware, you are aware of that)**** happens in a blink.I can comment that I have run in the triple digits and my rig is pretty well planted.
stang99x 03-09-2010, 03:23 PM Its not that it isn't well planted, it just wants to cross 4 lanes in 2/10's of a second. I had quite a few fast cars, a coupel quick SUV's, but never one that wanted to cross lanes so bad during a pass. Just struck me as odd, was wondering if anyone else noticed it. I had ip up to 130 something one time on I85 and I dared not changed lanes.
Chris Hull@TTC 03-09-2010, 03:25 PM Bwoody Sway bar links would help big time!! I had same issue and these along with Eibach lowering springs changed my Jeep for the better.
stang99x 03-09-2010, 04:46 PM I have thought about the sb's, but this is my wifes DD and i'm not wanting to make it to stiff for her liking. Definately not even considering lowering, my mother in law drove it this weekend with my wife and slammed it into a parking spot, bending both front end support bars in angles that words can't describe, and hit so hard the tranny line started leaking. Really pissed me off

You should definitely do the sway links. It keeps the back end planted better, especially when you get in those truck ruts on the highway. It is an easy $200 unnoticeable to the wife mod.
stang99x 03-09-2010, 05:16 PM Yea I was just reading about them on another thread, found them on ebay for 185 shipped in choice of color (not that i'd put "annodized caramel candy green" on anything, but it is nice to have options though I'll probably go for black and remain stealth

Doesn't really matter what the color is. You can only really see the fronts when the wheel is turned all the way.
stang99x 03-09-2010, 05:23 PM K, that seems to be a done deal for me......seems other having similiar issues have found this to fix it.
The other issue, if anyone wishes to chime in, one of the tranny lines starting leaking after the mother in law rammed the jeep on a parking curb. Seems to be from that pressed fitting visible from the passenger side front looking down under the radiator hose. Any known issues here?
Jd3443pd 03-09-2010, 07:25 PM If she hit the parking block hard enough to do all that damage I would replace that line. As opposed to risking the fitting blowing off and toasting your transmission while running down the interstate at 100 + and the tranny fluid washing down your rear tires and you doing 360s down the interstate.
santov 03-09-2010, 08:37 PM What tires were you riding on that fast? I cruise at 90 late at night sometimes, and I wonder if it's the stock GY RSAs that want to track all the road groves, etc. Anybody with Nitto 420s have high speed input?
L8BRAKR 03-09-2010, 08:37 PM Sway bars would def help, just curious, what tires are you running?
stang99x 03-10-2010, 07:18 AM It has the factory goodyears on it, none of the old 2006 ones though.
I think i'ma ease by the dealer and check on that line. I was lookin at alldata and the replacement instructions were very vague, but alot of things said R&I tranny, and that I don't want to do:eek:
WestPalmBeachSRT8 03-10-2010, 07:53 AM Check your alignment... Mine drove fine, but the front inner tread was wearing a bit... Shop said the Toe-in was way off. That'll definitely add to poor highspeed handling.
Sway bar links are a must... should have come from the factory like that.
Muddriver 03-10-2010, 02:12 PM I do often high speed turns on the german Autobahn and i think, the major problem are the run flats. The handling of the Jeep is much better without run flats
stang99x 03-10-2010, 03:32 PM I had the alignment checked on monday, along with a wheel balance. The alignment was spot on, two rears and one front out of balance. I ordered the BW sway links this am.
I bought the line this morning as well, not nearly as bad as i thought, both lines are built together so you have to get the pair, but wholesale cost was only $37. Its the whole kitnkaboodle though, from the cooler all the way back to the tranny. Likes like a string of profanities to come.
And, oddly enough, I've had notone problem from my runflats, contrary to what I have read from others experience. They grip good, ride fine, and are wearing nicely:D
