: How to check fault codes

I did some searching and could only find where people were actually posting their error code but, nothing about how to pull the code. My truck hesitated on the throttle once last night and again this morning and now the check engine light is on.

Can someone tell me how to check code?

If you have a Predator you can check with that. Most auto parts stores have an OBDII code reader and will check for you.

On my 05 Ram, I could turn key on off on off on and then it displayed codes on the odometer readout. I thought this was standard to all OBDII vehicles but, it sounds like you need a code reader on these?

To pull your codes go...

ACC/ON ACC/ON ACC/ON

You can get a description of the codes HERE (http://www.iequus.com/Dtc).

Bernie, thanks for the info. I ran out and tried this a few times and I can't get the codes to come up. I tried with door closed, door open, brake on, brake off and I still can't get a code to come up.

I got in, shut the door and then turned the key to on acc on acc on acc and then watched the odometer and info center. Nothing came up so then I turned it off, opened and closed the door and then put key in and turned to on... waited until dash lights all came on and then went back to acc on acc on acc on and waited, still nothing. Is there anything else I need to do before cycling the key?

Most all Chrysler products if not all use that "key dance" and the Jeep does as well. Normally if there's no codes you should just see --done--. There are some codes that clear themselves with "three good starts" or are a one trip fault.

I highlighted the above because I'm not sure if that's the procedure you did or not. You should begin at ACC, not ON as you have above. On the 3rd cycle leave it in the ON position.

Still can't get the codes but, the CE light went out so I'm guessing that's why. Took it to Autozone who scanned it for me and I'm getting P0700 and U0404. Both referring to transmission and shifter. Looks like a trip to the dealer is in order....

P0700 is TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM (MIL REQUEST). It's an active DTC that is stored in the TCM. One Trip Fault. Three good trips to turn off the MIL.

U0404 is IMPLAUSIBLE DATA RECEIVED FROM ESM when the TCM detects an incorrect CAN ID from the Electronic Shift Module (ESM).

Thanks again Bernie for the info and quick replies.

I did some research on this and it sounds like a somewhat common problem in all Grand Cherokees. Looks like the ESM is bad so the computer doesn't know which gear it's in and pauses until the gear shifter control module realizes which gear and sends that message to the computer. If I put it in neutral and back in drive, I'm good but, I'm reading this only gets worse and happens more frequently if not replaced.

Insert and turn the ignition key from "Off" to "On" three times, moderately fast and without pausing ("ON" is when the digital odometer is displayed).

Tip: use the "count to 5" method, where "1" is the first "On":

Off > On > Off > On > Off > On
0 1 2 3 4 5

0 - Insert key (Off)
1 - On
2 - Off
3 - On
4 - Off
5 - On

At the third "On" the odometer display will read "DTC REPORT" and list the codes. If no codes are present the message "Done" will appear.
