Hello,

How many of you hear a rattle, or exhaust leak type sound under acceleration? I've had both TSB's done but I'm still getting that noise. Two dealers now have told me just to live with it. My solution has been to turn the radio up, but I'm wondering how bad/loud is it for everyone else? Seems pretty loud to me, and I'm thinking it's another problem being misdiagnosed as the exhaust hitting the transfer case (TSB#1).

On a separate note, anyone near the Chicago burbs wanna meet to compare notes and let me listen to your Jeep?

I live in the city (river north), and am not familiar with what you are talking about. I have not had any issues with mine that others on the board are having.

Hey jms935

If you're not hearing it, I wonder what else could be going on...*shrug*

I'll start a new post for a chi-town gathering, and some proposed dates. See if we can get a couple people to show.

Thanks
J-

I had the same problem. I took mine to the dealer and they told me they were issued a "bulletin" on it. I guess it's just a bolt next to the catalytic converter that requires a washer. (i think) I had mine back in about an hour with no more rattle!!

Hey 1FSTSUV,

Thanks for the post, but I already had both TSB's (Technical Service Bulletin) done, but the noise is still there. I'm hoping I can ride in someone elses GC at the Chicago meet to compare.

Get rid of the stock muffler and the noise will be gone! The noise is either the baffels in the stock muffler rattling or resonance. That washer thing is a joke and I told my dealer that, not done to mine and won't be either. I run the Magnaflow X Muffler now, no drone but just a deep sound, performance picks up too! MO Gene

Mine rattles like hell a second when you start it, but then it goes away.
Did it with 0 miles on it, and still does it now with me working on 2,000 miles

Whoops forgot that I posted about this issue on here too. I got it resolved. Turned out to be a warped header from the factory. I finally found the right dealer to help.

They replaced the header. 6 hours for the one side. Glad DCX picked up the tab...

Left side, right side? Can you descibe in more detail the noise you were getting? How exactly did your mechanic figure this out? Was it happening in low gear as well as high gear?

Passenger side. The noise sounded like an exhaust leak, but I kept thinking it was one of the TSB's for a rattle under acceleration. It sounded like a metal against metal tapping that seemed to rise and fall with acceleration. It was very noticeable at all RPM's, and had done it since day one. I took it to three dealers before Naperville Jeep finally figured it out. My guess is it was a combination of me talking to the service manager; telling him two other dealers couldn't figure it out, and a good service tech that was good at wrenching. I would look around for a dealership that has an SRT certified technician. That could help.

What are your symptoms?

I do have rattles coming from exhaust ... it doesn’t bother me though.... but you are absolutely right the exhaust system on GC SRT8 does rattle ...

The front Cat-pipes on the Jeeps have a pipe within a pipe. If you look at them they have crimps all along both lenths of pipe. The only thing holding the inside pipe are the crimps. They do this for heat shielding, a good idea but they do rattle from time to time. Cadillac did the same thing years ago and had a similar rattle issue, I know, I had one....

I hear vibrations right at start-up, then, when the engine warms, they go away. What is the deal?

The noise I have is only noticeable under heavy acceleration, and usually when "bogged down" in a higher gear. Very similar to what the Flash TSB described as clutch noise. Sort of like the sound of tiny ballbearings rolling around in a tube. I had the Flash TSB done and the noise lessened a bit but is still very much there. I have also verified that the tranny bolt is not hitting the exhaust per the other TSB. In addition I have had the muffler replaced.

I'd bring it a reliable dealer. Test drive it with the tech that is going to service your Jeep. Talk with him and tell him that you've been to other dealers, and have had other people look at it, but the problem still exists. Mention this web-site and that others have had the same rattle, and that the problem turned out to be a bad header.

The key to this is finding the right guy to troubleshoot it. While test driving the car with the tech, ask him how long he's been working on cars. If the answer is less than 10 years, find another one. Also like I mentioned above try to find a dealer that has an SRT certified technician. Even if the nearest dealer is 50 miles away it might make it worth it.

Good luck and keep us informed!

The tech I have is pretty sharp, but unfortunately the last time I took it in and went for a test drive with him I could not for the life of me reproduce the sound. Yet everyday on the way to or from work I can make it happen. I'll be going there again soon as my rear wiper decided to take a dump and will pass on the info.

It seems though that if it was the header that was bad/leaking I would have the symptoms at all RPM levels. The only time I get the rattle is in higher gear when "bogged" down a little and under acceleration as mentioned. I'm familiar with what an exhaust leak would sound like, in your case was it it exhaust leak causing itself the sound or something loose in the header/mounting? Also, was your mechanic able to determine visually that the header was bad, i.e. noticing that is was warped and not mounted flush?

Sounds like a tricky one. In my case there was nothing visually to show signs of a bad header (ie black soot by the leak). He wasn't able to see the warpage until he took the header off. But I was able to produce the sound even with the thing in Park.

Wondering if it's a bad cat? *shrug* Does it happen more then the car heats up?

I have the exact same sound/issue going on as well. It happens when you are in 3rd just crusin...get on it and it makes this wining, "bogged down" sound, I still think its the transmission.. weird sound for sure. When I took it to the dealer, rode it with an experienced transmission tech and they said it was a bolt of some sort. They messed with the bolt and the thing still wines like no tomorrow. It is especially apparent when you have more weight in the car. I am glad I am not the only one who noticed this. At least my SRT is consistent, I can reproduce that noise any time... Nothing came up in regards to the header though...

Please let me know if you find anything out...

Mine did this exactly and some other of these issues I have read on this thread, the stock muffler had 1 of the welds come loose and under certain low/hi acceleration sounded like metal tapping metal and went away, I changed to a custom catback new muffler problem solved. The above problem sounds like the TSB that came out adding washers to give a bolt clearance that is touching the exhaust would take care of that.

Hi, Iv'e just purchased an '06 with 5k miles (swapped an '03 Porsche C2 for it). I'm scheduled to take it in for service next week for what seems to be the same annoying sound on wide-open acceleration. I hope it can be resolved with little frustration; this is my first American car in over 20 years, and my wife also traded her RX330 (what junk) for a new 5.7L Commander (really nice for the price).
