How do I change the pads? I had them off last week to try and eliminate squealing and that didn't work. Have new pads, just need to put them on. How the heck to do I change pads? I have done more brake jobs than I can remember but I have never done a split caliper design.

So, pictures would be awesome, instructions would be great, and just a "hay dummy, push the pins out" would be even better.

I searched and searched and searched on this forum, maybe not using the right search terms, but I can't find it.

I don't have the manual yet so if it is in there, don't say look in the manual.

Thanks,
Greg

This thread is for installing pads on an LX SRT8, but the calipers are exactly the same as are the pads. I've always found these to be the best pics to show just how easy it is to change pads.

they are the easiest on the planet. You will have 2 slider pins on the top of the caliper. You use a punch and a hammer and knock the slider pins all the way through. The little metal clip on the top will fall off. You just slide the pads straight out and slide the new ones in. You do not take any part of the caliper apart or off the car. If you want to get rid to the noise you need to add shims and permitex anti seize to the side of the shim pointing to the piston. On the side touching the pad you add anti squeal ultra disk paste. You can get both of these at auto zone. You never put anything on the pads themselves! Only on the shims that go on the back side of the pad.

you do not need that piston spreader at all. Just use something to block one side and use your fingers to squeeze in the pistons. Remember you need to take off the cap for the brake fluid in the engine compartment. It will release air through there and make it possible to move the pistons in with your fingers.

Yeah, I did both my car and Jeep just hand pinching the pads. I did buy that pad spreader though and it's come in handy on other brake jobs I've done, but of course a C Clamp works well too. The $225 for the spreader was steep, but what the hell.

Awesome, I figured the pins came out, but that looked to easy.

Thanks everyone.

Can the shim be picked up at Autozone as well?

maybe but the pads should have come with shims. I know the stock pads come with shims. So do the CTS-V's. As far as I'm concerned if your pads do not have shims and if they are not prepped correctly like I pointed out, they will make noise sooner or later. The problem is the pads get frozen up at some point and start to chatter on the rotor. This is why you get the squeal out of them. All the anti seize does is make sure that the pats can not get frozen to the pistons.

The new pads have the shims on them, but they don't appear to come off to put anything between them, maybe I am wrong, haven't opened them up yet from the plastic.

Oh, I'm sure you are right. I had some wagner thermo quiets on my jeep for the past 20K miles. they were the same way. Shim is glued on. What I would try is get the permitex anti seize and the ultra disk quiet and mix them together and put a crap load of it on the metal shim and slide them in. I don't see why that would not get the same job done. It will basically keep the pads from freezing up on the pistons.

Yeah, most of the newer pads have the shims built into them.
