I have a 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8. I live in New York City and primarily do most of my driving in the city. My SRT has 5300 milesand I have owned it for exactly one year. I recently went to the Jeep dealership to have my car checked out. The service representative told me that my brakes were at 50% (5mm's) He said my breaks would have to be replaced in about 6 months at a cost of close to $2000. Is this possible? If so, is $2000 the right cost? Please advise. Thanks.

You can do aftermarket a lot cheaper. First I would see what others say but I find it hard to imagine your brakes already need to be replaced. If they do you can get a R1 rotors for 500$ and then all you need is new pads. There are a few options but it should still cost you less than a 1000.

Seems like way to much money to me. I had the pads on my Challenger changed at the dealer w/me providing the pads was around $200 for all 4 wheels.

Even for Brembos? I would only replace them with those. $2000 was a quote for all 4 wheels, rotors and pads.

$2,000 bucks on brakes on an 09' with 5,000 miles in 6 months?????????????????????

I think you need to take your rig somewhere else!

You can get 4 slotted/drilled rotors and all new pads from R1 concepts for like $500 bucks

Replace your rotors with R1's and get stock pads for the front and CTS-V brembo pads for the rear.

Doubt you need new rotors. I put 30k on my first jeep w/o a problem, then I went to the R1's and EBC pads - <$750 for parts, install yourself, takes about 1 hour in your driveway.

If anything you might need new pads. I swapped the pads on my '10 w/in 1,000 miles cause I like less dust, keeps the rims clean(er). Pads front and rear were only like $180.

dealer on crack! Do it yourself for around $800 for new R1 rotors and stock front pads and CTS-V rear pads. Changing brake pads and rotors is easyyyyyyyy. PM me and I can give you all the steps and tricks to doing it yourself.

P.S if your rear brakes are making noise it's not the brake pads. It's the fact that you do not have enough anti seize and anti noise compound on the shims.

Man... What is up with that... Only 5,000 miles and you're at 50% on the brakes?

I just got my 30,000 mile maintenance done last week. They inspected my brakes and said I still had a lot of meat on them and that I would be good for a while. These things have been squeaking since day 1, but they work great.

I drive my rig like crazy too. On every trip I hit 100+ at least 4 or 5 times on the freeway. Should I not take the dealerships advice and get them changed anyway?

Go to www.rockauto.com and search for Centric PosiQuiet pads #10411490 for the fronts ($42.79) and #10410530 ($33.79) for the rears. Buy some high temperature disk brake grease from your local car parts store. The pads are extremely simple to replace. (Rotors are a bit more complicated but unlikely you need them for your first change.)

I did the above at ~30K miles and had new (refreshed) brakes for under $100, installed.

I now have ~41K miles and everything is just fine.

If you want to stimulate the economy, go ahead and spend more, but it isn't necessary from the braking point of view...
