pg2 post #16 Previous stuff
pg3 post #21 framing
Pg3 post#29 Enclosure almost ready for glass
Pg4 Post #31 Ready for glass

I have made a recent discovery that may give some of you options for the custom stereo. I wanted to do kick panel components but I didnt think I could fit a set in there without taking up all my leg room.....So I started to take a few things apart.

Drivers side first.
I took the door sill trim off, then the under dash (the black piece), then I took out the plastic kick panel cover.....Hmmmm? There were some large harnesses there....I figured I would have to relocate them.
I dissassembled the big ole harness thing and it seperated into 2 sections.

You will have to remove the hood latch to get the cables to work with you.

the top section was put back together and I stuffed it up behind the fuse panel.

For the bottom I lifted the carpet and removed that styrafoam thingy and moved the bottom harness to that spot.

Now there are a few attachment points where the wires are secured to the metal...cut the cable ties and pop out the cable attachment things.....
Once you have all this done you can move the wires

There is a small wire loom that was in the way. I pulled it and it came up from the floor with a rubber grommet attached....I noticed it was empty....So I cut it and pulled the grommet off. then I put the grommet back in the hole it came from. I dont know why there was an empty wire loom there but I pondered whether it might be a tube for letting water drain. I will monitor this and if need be I will attach more tubing and reroute it to the grommet.

Okay
Now once the area was cleared I pondered over the area abit....Then I wondered how much space is behind the metal.....So I drilled a hole. I then stuck a rigid wire in the hole to see how deep it is....The channel is filled with expandy foam but the wire went through it and I measured that I should have about 2 inches back there.

Okay so now Im really thinking!!!!! I take it to the next level. I wonder if I can fit a 6.5in woofer in the kickpanel mounted to the metal?
So I used a spacer ring from my boston acoustics Z6 to mark the hole and proceded in cutting a big 5 inch hole in the metal with my mini saber saw.

It was a pain in the azz but I got the hole cut and started to remove the foam. Thats when it hit me!!!!!!!

There is like 2 inches of space in the hole....and about 3 inches of space behind the factory kick panel.....Uh that makes 5 inches.

I then rushed into the garage to get an MDF ring for an 8 inch subwoofer. I got back to the Jeep and test fitted the ring......

YYEEAAAYUUHH!!!!!, he screams in the voice of Lil Jon.

I can fit an 8 inch sub in my kickpanels and still have space for my boston acoustics Z6 components...
At the very least, if you dont want to do all the cutting and fabrication I am doing, Just do a 6.5. You can mount a .75 in spacer and mount to the metal.

Im going to document the entire build in the Jeep and i will use this post for all future updated progress. Feel free to ask questions....

Pictures will follow.

The plan:

As of right now I plan to install:

1 set of Boston acoustics Z6 components in the kick panels along with 1 JL audio 8w3d2 subwoofer in each side.

1- JL audio 13w7 sub in a ported fiberglass enclosure, Low tuned to about 25hz to maintain good Sound Quality. The sub will be for ground shaking low end...The 8's will be there for up front bass and NASTY midbass!!

1- JL audio 1000/1amp - for the 13

2- JL audio 300/2 amps- 1 for the bostons and 1 for the jl 8's

The Alpine IVAD310 fold out dvd player is going in a pod where the map lights used to be....(where the sunroof button is)

PXAH 700 processor will be mated to the dvd player by way of a toslink fiber optic cable.
The ampack will be in the wasted area where the load floor used to be. The Sub enclosure will be mounted to the seatbacks. There will be 2 pieces but when the seat is folded up it looks like 1 piece.

Hehehe!!!!

I have a TON of work to do for this thing......I may beat you to the fiberglass sub enclosure but You are already listening to yours!!!

I still have to run all cables, sound deaden the hell out of it, build the amprack. finish the DVD player install, integrate the add on DVD with the factory DVD, install the 8's (that will not be fun), fabricate the kickpanels and install, and then when everything is installed, go back and tweak everything again.....tune it, track down leftover rattles, make sure everything fits correctly and make it look like it was meant to be there from the factory or better.

Tuning will never be done....There will be changes for the life of the Jeep!!!

Please forgive me.....They will be coming....I didnt want to wait to post it.....

Every day, more and more Im finding the perfection in this Jeep...

It may not be perfect in every way, but it seems to be perfect for me.

It seems to have summed all the things I wanted from my previous vehicles into one. There are only a few more things I would like to have......(like 30 miles per gallon)

(Ill settle for 20 though)

I have to do the 8's and the 6.5's in the kicks now because I cant believe that it will actually work..

I keep thinking, " theres no way that I could possibly have 8 inch subs at my feet and 6.5 components with it. And all that midbass!!"

Last time I thought " theres no way" was when I dreamed of getting my Jeep. And we see how that turned out....

I put two Boston G5 12" subs with an Apline PDX 1.1000 amp. These hit harder then you would care to venture. The only problem with the JL's is the fact they are 12" deep. Which means, you sould need a box at least 14" deep to accomidate them.

Not if you put them on an angle like Im doing!!!

I really want one of those PDF amps...I dont know if you knew this or not, but if you replace the fuses on the amp with bigger fuses, you will get more power out of that little beast.

I believe some people are getting like 1500 watts out of that little bitty box amp.

I want to get one because I know that this trick works, but I want to use my oscilliscope to find out the max unclipped power you can get.

I wanna test before and after...Besides that amp is so freaking hot to death!!!

I had the 6.53 setup for years....I loved it....You can in fact very easily do the mods to the kick panel that I did and mount the entire 3 way down there.
the 6.5in mounted to the metal and the 4in and tweet aimed at the spot where the dome light would be.

Just to make things ABSOLUTELY CLEAR>>>>>

I DO NOT listen to my music loud with my daughter in the car...I also turn off the subwoofer every time she sits in the car....

I love my little precious princess and would NEVER EVER do anything that could mess up her health or wellbeing.....http://home.comcast.net/~martinjammin/wsb/media/809484/site1009_t.JPG

She is the sunshine in my life and NOTHING in this world or any other world means didlley squat to me compared to her...

Just wanted to make that clear because I got into an arguement with someone that thought I play that crap with her in there...

Yeah. I knew it too!!!

I know it looks goofy...but I wanted to keep as much useable space as possible and this was the way that I had to do it....What you didnt see is all the air tanks, amps, processors and stuff to support both the stereo and the airride system....If I had mounted everything in the cargo area, there would be no way to put a single carry-on bag in there.

I eventually ported the enclosures and let me tell you, IT WAS WANGIN!!!

I mean seriously beating out of control!!!!

The best thing about it was that with the 2 sets of Boston acoustics Z6's, the highs were absolutely keeping up with the subs....I had like 250 watts going to each channel just for the highs (4 channels just for the front).

The drivers were mounted in the kicks and doors.

I miss this setup. Even with the subs shut off, it was VERY loud and extremely clean.

This is the reason why I am a cult-type boston acoustics Z6 fan.
I have never had a better set of drivers.(well maybe other than the boston pro's)
The Z6's can take whatever you can throw at them....200watts rms, no problem

400watts rms, no problem
Hell I know a guy that had 500 X 2watts RMS going to a single set of Z6's without a single issue.....

Impressive to say the least in my opinion.

I had the 4" & 1" in the kick & my 6" in the door - it sounded better to me that way AFTER I insulated the doors/floors
I had the 2-way sysyem in the rear doors & 2 x10 JL W series & 1 Far Cap
I had the 400.3 pushing the speakers & the 500.1 for their box
sounded great even at low volume it ws clean

it's a little crooked :D

It looks crooked in the pic but it is not as bad as it looks.

I will say that it will be slightly off. I was going another route before but decided to change direction...If you look closely, you can see that the bottom is actually 2 pieces..... I had it designed so I could fold the seat down. So the enclosure was going to be 2 pieces. The left side was going to be a Dumby enclosure filled with foam... I wanted it to be symetrical but I only have 1 sub... I then decided that for performance reasons I will be doing ported... So I will need the extra space.

So I rejoined the 2 pieces...And one line is slightly more vertical than the other.

You cant really tell from the pics but, The area in front of the screen faceplate is angled in such a way that you will have a perfect view of the screen from my seat. any more and it would be akward.

The only weird part will be reaching up to adjust the radio....But I have a remote for that.

There will be a cover over it to make it look like its not a radio.

Im a little over half way there. I had to modify the enclosure...It was ported but I did not like the sound. I am just a sealed box type of guy. so it is now waiting for primer. The amp rack build is almost done. I believe I will have the cables ran in and hopefully operational next week. Well actually I gotta build the kickpanels so it might be a little delayed. I work after work and still have to make time for the wife and daughter and family gatherings.

Ill post pics soon...You will like what you see.

Just bumping this to the top for pics I will be posting later

Things have been redesigned twice to get the enclosure to sound up to my standards...Due to the unique design, the ports were not happy with their placement so I had to cut and redo them. Now it sounds very nice in the testing environment.

Pics will follow soon.

nice looking install port and sub facing back will get deeper(sound waze has more time to develop before hitting your ear) but i think it looks better facing up. so either way has its pro's and Cons

i am starting a new thread to im doing a really big SQL system in my GCSRT8 and am going to start posting about it next week when its finished(3500watts RMS, and 18 speakers)

Cool I cant wait to see. Im using the existing equipment I have left from my totalled mercedes... wife wont let me buy anything else..

Im only going to have about 1600 watts and 5 speakers. But I will be integrating the factory stereo into the install for surround sound. should be pretty cool.

Im firing back but I really prefer downfiring setups....it does interesting things to the sub bass.
