It's a filter/reservoir that catches the blow-by oil your PCV system pulls back into the intake manifold. Where it accumulates and turns into a messy sludge, finally making it's way back into the combustion chamber to be burned off. But oil and sludge doesn't burn well. So you end up with a gummy mess, carbon deposits, and other nasty things.
