He also said he'd rather have one of many other rapid station wagons. How many of these "rapid station wagons" can be had for the same price?

He's an idiot. I'm surprised that someone who holds his position doesn't realize that the appeal of any performance car is both personal and emotional. It is not based on stats, numbers or practical comparisons. To compare a Jeep SRT8 to a station wagon merely because neither can go off-road is absurd. I never heard these ridiculous statements when GMC came out with the Grand National based Cyclone in 1991 or the Typhoon in 1992.

Additionally, Mr. Brauer seems to love the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning. A truck that can't haul or go off-road. He even goes so far as to say "I'd probably go with this truck for my personal use." For God's sake, have some consistency in your opinions man.

Read his comments on the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning here: http://www.edmunds.com/apps/vdpcontainers/do/vdp/articleId=102037/pageNumber=2

I was wondering when someone from this site was going to see that blog entry. Karl's a great guy, regardless of what he says about the SRT8. Not everyone has to like it. His opinion certainly didn't dissuade me from my decision, and I sit less than 30 feet from the guy and have worked with him for over 5 years.

We tested the 2006 model and liked it a lot:
http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/Followup/articleId=108449

We also did a full test on the 2007, and the story should be up in a couple weeks.

Karl drives a Ford GT. So his comments about ground clearance always make me smile. I haven't busted his chops about the cracking half-shafts on the GT yet...I figured I'd keep that one up my sleeve until I really needed it.

I've also received more compliments on how the JGC looks than my E39 M5, and this company is absolutely chock-full of car nuts. So even though he may be the Editor-In-Chief, he doesn't necessarily speak for all of us :)

Karl's dream ride.

Based on Matt Edmunds correction that Karl in fact drove a Ford GT I was incorrect in my assumption he drove a Smart Car. I stand corrected. Based on his dislike for our brutish stationwagons I weep to think what red line that Ford will never see.

From the Edmunds article:

...you can fix almost anything with more power
What was broken?

...trucky ride quality...
"Trucky"??, is that even a word? Karl, what did you expect from a 420-hp vehicle built for racing?

...Obviously, with a lowered ride height and 20-inch wheels, it can't go off-road, so it's basically a rapid station wagon -- and still heavy by station wagon standards. Bottom line, there are plenty of other rapid station wagons out there I'd rather drive, most of them with superior steering feel, handling, ride quality and interior space...
Why reviewers "fault" the Jeep for not being able to go "off-road" is beyond me. Do they not understand that it was NOT designed to go off-road, and that the people buying it are NOT buying it to go off-road?

Hey Karl, you forgot to mention some of the Jeep SRT's other "drawbacks" - it cannot haul 7 (or more) passengers, it's not a hybrid, it doesn't have a convertible top, the engine is not a diesel, it can't tow a motorhome, and it's not Japanese-built.

...This car is really meant for Jeep fanatics who would rather go fast than go off road...
Uhh, DUHH!!!!!!!! DOHHHH!!!!!!!!! DUHHHHHHH!!!!!!

GEE, DO YOU THINK THAT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, THAT WAS THE REASON IT WAS BUILT?????

I said it with a smile. I'm from NJ myself, still have family there, and clearly didn't anticipate that it would be seen as a personal attack, so my apologies for that. I didn't think you guys would mind busting chops a bit especially since you were dragging my company through the mud. No offense intended.

Our website is busy, for sure. But it gets millions of hits a day and helps many thousands of people new cars or trucks at a fair price. The editorial articles don't really bring in much money, but they sure generate press, whether bad or good.

The internet is used mainly for two purposes. To obtain information, and to complain. This thread seems to complain about a site meant for information, and since I added fire to that, my apologies.

Maybe, but because production numbers are so low, he went for a small market if they were going for website hits. Although you might have one of the highest concentrations of car enthusiasts per production numbers with this thing.

On another note, I can't believe this thread is still going. I think what Greg really meant was stick to comments about this guys article more than personal attacks, but hey I guess its free speach...

Wow, lots of flame on this one. I think Karl makes some valid points, I guess he underestimated how "fanatical" jeep fans are.

Mango... the reason we read the blog is because we care what Karl thinks...

I think the reason you are getting so much heat is because you are pinning the jeep as obsolete, and not giving it the opportunity as a competitor.
