: Review of my 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8

As all (or most) may know I came from a 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland with the 5.7L HEMI. It was a great vehicle. It did its job with many tasks. It never got me stuck in any inclement weather, it did well at the track, and once in a while I had a kill of some douchebag driver. Anyways, it was time for me to get the vehicle I have been yearning for, for over 3 years. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8, the beast. In this thread I would like to provide my review of this vehicle. Some may find this review of mine useless, some may find it helpful. I will break down the review in sections (Exterior, Interior, Performance, e.t.c.). So here it goes.

Exterior- The looks of this animal are like no other. Body lines that symbol a voluptuous woman. You stare at the vehicle with this dumbfounded look like this is something you have never seen before and you instantly fall in love with it.

The 08 and up front fascia refresh, gives the SRT a "angled" look. The squared off chiseled look had to go for this much needed slick look. The headlamps are auto-leveling HID projectors (optional) and they offer a tremendous light output and you can see everything on the road clearly. The HID's are leaps and bounds ahead of the standard halogens that can't light up a carved pumpkin on Halloween. For the pricing of the Option Group that the HID's come in, it is a no brainer. I guarantee that if you do not get the projectors, once you see them on a SRT-8, you will want a set of your own.

The styling of the SRT is certainly an eye catcher. You will find yourself noticing that a lot more people are looking in your direction, so dont think it is you, because it is not. :D

The lower stance of the SRT Jeep, in my opinion gives the Jeep a more aggressive cheetah like look that in any moment can run away in a blink of an eye. It looks fast, even when parked. The wheels add to that fast look. These wheels are very unique that need not to be replaced by some aftermarket rim. It is a style that like the rest of the Jeep, does not need to be changed by some aftermarket add-on. The durabrite finish on the Alcoa forged rims add a sort of brighter, shiner look to the wheels. Also the durabrite finish makes the wheels easy to clean. Just simple car soap and water make the rims shiny and new again. :)

Performance: I thought that the upgrade from a 5.7 was no big deal because it was just .4 liters. WRONG. The 6.1 powered SRT-8 slams me in the seat while taking off from a light, so you better hold on when launching. The acceleration on the SRT Jeep is good but the ETC kills a lot of the joy. If we could have the old fashioned mechanical method, that would be great. One can only dream. Highway driving is a blast with the SRT WK. You need to merge on a highway? No problem. The Jeep will get you from 40-80/90 in no time and you will dust that son of a ***** that wouldn't let you merge. You're traveling at 75-80 and need to pass someone? No problem, in a blink of an eye you are at 120 mph and you better hope you come back to reality and you have to slow down before you get another ticket. :D

Speaking of slowing down, the Jeep's brakes are Brembo high performance brakes. These puppies get the heavy Jeep from 60-0 in a hurry. There is no fade in the pedal and you never lose confidence that you may not stop in time. My two issues with these brakes are the dust and the squeal from the rear pads. I am not kidding when I see myself wiping down the rims twice in one day from city driving the beast. Not a huge issue but it is something I can deal with. The brake squeal I have a problem with and I cannot understand why switching to CTS-V "Brembo" pads fixes the issue. WTF is in the CTS-V pads that the Jeep pads don't have?

Of course, this beast eats a lot and be prepared to get 10-12 city if you are in a less congested city but if you live in a big city (NYC, Chicago) like me, I would expect mileage in the single digits. But hey why am I even talking about fuel economy here? I don't give a **** and I know most of you share the same mindset.

The transmission shifts are crisp and you feel them more than the 5.7 transmission but it is not the greatest thing in the world, too bad Bill can't get a exclusive deal with Chrysler and have his valvebody placed in the transmission straight from the factory (Bill, I am going to be calling you in the near future ;) ). My complaint about the transmission is that in my opinion, it gets confused on the downshifting while driving in the city. I often see myself using the autostick feature.

The suspension in this vehicle offers a nice ride, if you are constantly on nice flat, paved roads. Once you get a few bumps, the stiffness of the ride appears (but I knew this so I will deal with it). One thing I must say is that while traveling on the highway or at speeds above 45, make sure you are paying attention because if you hit a bump, wow the bumpsteer smacks you in the face. You better be holding onto that wheel otherwise you may go into the next lane. Maybe coilovers can improve this, but we will see.

Interior- I love the Black theme in the interior. It is a tremendous improvement over the 06-07 style. Easy to clean, doesn't stain so easy. The front seats in the SRT caress you like some one is hugging you. The bolsters keep you in place. I don't slide all over the place like I did in my Overland. Even though the cheap plastics are still apparent, people please realize it is a Jeep, not a Mercedes or a BMW. Jeep tries to improve the plastic by wrapping certain things with leather (the speedo cluster cover, the e-brake handle, and the front door armrests).

The 09 and 10' offers performance pages, which is a fun unit. It gives you the ability to do 0-60 runs, 0-100 runs, 1/8th mile runs, 1/4 mile runs, and a G-Force meter (dont try to get the EVIC to say "TILT")

The Mygig is an awesome unit. The touch screen offers a driver friendly experience. Much better than the old REC unit with all the joysticks. It is a easy to use unit that offers iPod connect, the ability to upload pictures and music. It is something nice to glance at every once in a while. One thing I can care less for is the Sirius traffic. Nothing spectacular in my opinion, I just shut it off.

The Kicker Audio group (Speakers and the Sub in the trunk) are worth every penny. The system sounds great and clear. I am not really into sound systems but this system really is the best I have had in any vehicle. The sub really booms when you get higher and higher up in volume. I wish that I had dual subs in the trunk. :D Maybe someday.

Conclusion- The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8 is a real bang for your buck vehicle. You are getting so much vehicle for your money. Can the Turbo Cayenne or the Supercharged Land Rover say that? I think not. What I love about the SRT8 WK is its user friendlyness, whether it be the AWD (mash the pedal and go), the Mygig (self explanatory, can't get lost), or the Performance Pages, you can not get lost and confused with the complexity of the vehicle. There is no complexity in the SRT8 WK in my opinion. There is no iDrive to get pissed off at here folks.

Is this the practical daily driver? No if you have concerns over fuel mileage. If you even think you will have a problem with the gas mileage, throw the idea of the SRT-8 Jeep out. If you have a growing family of over more than 2 kids, this also is not the vehicle for you. Once your children start growing, I think the back seat will be an issue. The Grand Cherokee SRT is really not a SUV, its more of a sports car with a bigger body and weight. I would consider the SRT WK a disposable income luxury. It is not efficient in the economy or utility sense.

Well I apologize for the long read but I felt I should write up a review of the SRT. I know some may say STFU but sorry guys, I felt like typing a little. :D

Thanks for reading,

Many Keys, I wonder about the height of the Overland or Limited vs the SRT8. I measured two of all three models and found in each case that they were less than half an inch difference in height at the top of each fender well. You seem to be saying that the SRT8 sits lower than say the Limited. Do you in fact see it that way?

thanks M/K

Thanks Chris! I will get the tune soon as I want some power unleashed. :D And I think the valvebody is a great mod that is on the cheap. :)

Bro you got a piece of history with your Jeep. No need for anything new. :)

Great read Joe! You and I have identical vehicles, except for the front license plate ;), and we got them close in time. Nothing wrong with talking or typing about new toys, and it's nice for me to hear a different perspective of my buggy. My initial impressions were much shorter, but then I don't drive as much. One reason MPG doesn't really mean that much to me. That said, I've been around 13.4 these first 400 or so miles. Now that's it's broken that could change drastically. Starting tomorrow when I start playing with the 0-60 timer. :D

I've read a lot of reviews describing the problem with bumps, expansion joints, etc. on the highway, but really haven't experienced that. I've hit some nasty spots, and sure I feel them, but it's never felt like it was gonna change course on me. Maybe I'm not going fast enough, but I'd think 70-80 would do it. Now on surface streets at slower speeds it tosses my ass all over the place. But as I've stated before, hit some curvy mountain roads and all's forgiven. It handles better than it has a right to IMO.

The MyGig seems quite functional and useful, and admittedly I need more windshield time with it, but coming from the system in my Infiniti it's not quite as polished or easy to use. But it has it's strengths too. I think the nav system works sightly better. And the sub does up the quality level of the audio. I do wish they would've put the phone controls on the steering wheel though. Speaking of which the controls on the wheel seem like an afterthought. One thing that totally shreds the Infiniti is the cruise control! I love that sucker, and it's very precise. Bump it up or down a mph at a time. Very cool! Also the downshifts on down grades is slick. The Infiniti had a tendency to overrun the speed, causing me to switch to sport mode and downshift. Something I still use in the Jeep for the terrain up here. Plus it's fun. ;)

If I have any real complaint I guess it's the ultra low roofline. I'm almost six foot, and I can't get the seat low enough to let me see traffic lights when I'm first in line without craning my neck. Wish the seat went lower. Otherwise I've got no complaints. Like you say, it's like a big sports car. Exactly what I was after. I still wanted a sporty ride, but something that could carry more than a few bags of groceries. The SRT8 delivers in spades.

Thanks for the review!

Nice write up. I'm looking forward to my upgrade from a 06 GCSRT8 to the updated 08 GCSRT8.

The interior is def. worth it....hell I got excited over the larger armrests and telescoping wheel! haha

You'll experience the bumpsteer. You just need to hit the right speed. :)

I like to see differing opinions on the features of the vehicle. To me the Mygig seems so easy. But hey everyone had their own opinion.

Well I have no problem with the roofline. I got used to it with the 07 I had. LOL

I do dislike the blind spots though. Those A-pillars are huge blind spots. I have to actually once in a while do a Ace Ventura almost to make sure there is no one there.

Many keys, thanks for the quick comeback on that Joe. I'll try a remeasure, I'd like to end up with my Limited ride at the same height as an SRT8 although I will have to take into consideration the fact that I need to pull almost 7000lbs at times and that is sure to set the rear end down some.

Thanks again M/K

Not dissing it. Just a difference in interface design. I liked the Infiniti better than my Murano's too, and they were both Bose systems from Nissan. Go figure...

I'll get used to it, but I get the feeling the cars next to me think I'm scanning the skies for black helicopters. :D

ROTFLMAO! Nice visual there. The blind spots haven't really bothered me as the last car was much worse. The Jeep's almost like an observation deck by comparison.

Joe, nice accurate review and overall synopsis. I believe you know my viewpoint - the 2010 Jeep GCSRT is the last great American muscle car. It can haul 4 adults and their luggage, run 12 sec ETs, carve apexes with the best and will stop on a dime.

I think some of the bumpsteer is a result of the engineers trying to achieve decent feedback and road feel from the WK-SRT suspension - assuring a balance between street and road course performance. I'm sure it can be worked out, but will come at a high cost.

Although its been 25 years, I've spent some seat time in a Formula Ford and you'd be surprised how much an open-wheel race car moves around at-speed with a simple change in pitch on a road course.

Damn brings back memories, I need to take advantage of the SRT Track Experience and do some lapping...

No the black 08 was beat up on the exterior and they didn't want to budge on the price. I'm looking at a Steel Blue 08 w/all the options and waiting to see if Chris (blownwk) is getting a brilliant black 08 traded in at his dealer.

I was really surprised at how nice the improvements are in the 08 compared to my 06.

Joe,
Nice job.
I agree with all the positives. It really is a very nice vehicle.

But.....Things I have noticed and not been fond of.
#1 When in Navigation and you change the channel, the display doesn't change to audio information. Or vice versa..you're listening to music and it's telling you to get off...The radio info stays on the screen, not the nav info.
The volume buttons and channel changing buttons should be on the front of the wheel and the performance EVIC option buttons should be on the back of the wheel...IMO.
#2, Where the E-Brake connects to the center console, there is a cup shaped whole that catches anything and deposits under the center console. I dropped a water bottle top in it. I can see it in there, but needle nose pliers are too fat to grab it. So...Very minute, but an annoying hole that will collect alot of "stuff"
#3 Back up camera gets dirty so easily. Becomes useless very quickly in any inclimate weather.
#4. Left and Right up and down shifts are not intuitive...Forward and backward up and downshifts are.
#5 250 miles per tankfull is too small. I don't care about the fuel economy part of it. I just don't like stopping so many times.

This is just nit picking. I love it and will learn it, but these are simple things that just confuse me a little.
I love my Jeep and am amazed everytime I drive it.

I guess I dont have those sort of complaints because I come from a 07 Overland Grand Cherokee. I sort of been used to the quirks of Jeep. LOL

For instance the fuel tank, autostick, and the backup camera. I agree with you but I have gotten used to it because of my previous Jeep.

I'm okay with this... I access and scroll through the EVIC performance pages more than I do the radio settings. Plus I like those buttons hidden so when my girlfriend screws with the channels, I just turn it back and blame the Nav unit. ;)

#4. Left and Right up and down shifts are not intuitive...Forward and backward up and downshifts are.

Agreed... I wish Hurst would make a replacement unit for the Jeep.

#6 Lower driver/passenger seat bolsters get thrashed pretty quickly... quality of the leather is questionable.

#7 Steering wheel is a half-size too large. And the mesh-like or carbon fiber style covering is not necessary.. they sould have wrapped it in full leather for the same feel, texture and look.

#8 Floor mats with white Jeep logo is a bad idea...

I guess the only solution to the camera is wipers on the lenses. :D

I find I actually use the camera less and the outer mirrors more in the Jeep than my Infiniti. They were too small really, though they did auto tilt down when you shifted into reverse. The camera was a must have on the options list, and I do use it, just less than I thought I would. What I absolutely love is the parking distance lights. No more looking for my mark on the garage wall anymore. LOL!
