: 03-04 cobra vs. Jeep srt8?
marko 12-30-2009, 10:46 AM I have this guy in my town that has a black 03 cobra thats always at the local track during the summer. I know when i show up at the track this summer with my new SRT8 he's going to be running his mouth.
so before i embarrass myself who do you think would win?
he has exhaust and intake, no pulley or tune.
me all stock for now, going to get exhaust and intake by then.
Thanks

bcm0018 12-30-2009, 11:01 AM Add a CMR tune to the list and you guys should be very close! Get an UD pully too and I say you take him. I have a UD pully, volant cai, CMR tune, and maganflow catback with res delete and I made multiple 12.6 @ 107 passes best being 12.612 @107.42. I know mustangs have traction issuse so I would say unless he is a good driver you win most the time. You will always jump out on him its just wether or not he can run you down before the finish. My mustang GT cant beat my Jeep because I need just a little more room to run it down.
cobraguy 12-30-2009, 11:04 AM how long has he had the cobra? because idk why he wouldnt have a pulley swap and tune there cheap. if he gets that better kiss him goodbye if he hooks you won't touch him without a blower or major motor work.
really depends on driver tho..
i have both and my cobra destroys the jeep with minimal mods
marko 12-30-2009, 11:05 AM Never been to willow grove, i think its alittle way from me. Im outside of Hazleton.
I hit up Numedia Raceway "outside of Bloomsburg" pretty much every Friday night in the summer.

marko 12-30-2009, 11:08 AM The kid had an evo with some minor mods, he couldnt keep a tranny in the car
so he got this cobra right around in June.
I seen him run it acouple of times at the track with et streets, he was getting 13.30's with the car.
He's one of those kids that his parents get what he wants LOL

Since your not too far from me and thats the best he can do you can go head to head with him stock. If he learns to drive you might need a few mods. It will probably come down to reaction time.
SRT-MANA 12-30-2009, 11:14 AM go get a cmr tune for those mods too..& it should be a killer race...when he sees your launch hes gonna freak & dump clutch & spin....
marko 12-30-2009, 11:15 AM Yea i figured that, sucks we have so much of a weight difference between both vehicles. But hey its a grocery getter LOL

The cobras arent realy lightweights. The cast iron blocks are nice and heavy but they handle boost very well!! Take them both on a long trip and see who wants to ride in which car. That and I hate driving my mustang in the snow, its almost pointless!!!

Hey, fyi stock I ran 13.3 with Afe cai, corsa catback & preadator 91 canned tune & on 92 oct.fuel I ran a 12.93:D we can be made pretty quick for the 1320. add a 150 shot & tune to those mods & you can get 11.7--11.9's
marko 12-30-2009, 11:45 AM How well do these transmission take to mods before they take a dump?

Depends how hard you beat on them. If your racing al the time heads and cams will be enough to adventually do them in but some guys have been running vortechs on the stock tranny for a while.

x2^^ I know a couple guys got like 15k miles out of the stock trans after doing a vortech kit. But like others have said...it really depends on how hard you drive it and how often you apply big power.
m4xm1l10n 12-30-2009, 03:15 PM Gonna try getting a Video for you bro , my friend has an 03 Cobra and i raped him off the like to 120MP and it was ugly !!!! 40-100 also raped , and pulled on him 1 car length from 80-130 all i have is a CMR and a 4" bwoody , now every Jeep reacts different to mods , so stock off the line you will own him rolling at any speed should be a close race eventually he will walk you . But i wouldn't worry on 1/4 as he has to be an A+ driver to hook off the line .
Here's video of me vs a 13.2 1/4 mile March 1 Mustang Moded and last race was vs a CAI /91 Predator tune Jeep and notice how it was close .

YoungMedic23 12-30-2009, 03:22 PM Heres me vs a maserati, g35, wrx, camaro, crappy supra, and LIGHTLY modded cobra on Nitto 555r's
Watch whole video or go to 4:23
At the time i had Bwoody intake, predator with canned tune, 170 thermostat, and Borla S....don't see how a CMR tune could have changed the outcome much
Our Jeeps are fast but 03/04 cobras are faster with a simple pulley swap...which all of them have done pretty much

m4xm1l10n 12-30-2009, 03:26 PM CMR over Canned tune is day and night difference , check the post above you of me vs the mustang than a 91 canned tune jeep with CAI vs the mustang and see the outcome .
03cobes 12-30-2009, 04:16 PM If the guy in the cobra can drive, which he can't. 13.30 is an embarrasing time for an intake/exhaust cobra! I've owned two 03 cobras and the last one has the same mods and I was running 12.7's at 110. I now have the jeep and can tell you the cobra is much faster on top end having a 112 trap speed in the cobra. With this guy driving, put an intake and tune on and you should edge him out if you launch correctly.
Forgive the newbie question, but what is this magic pulley, and why does it make such a difference in a Mustang? Is there an equivalent for our rigs, and does it make as much of a difference?
Just curious...

Cuz it's Supercharged and the pulley adds a good amount of HP by making the SC Spin faster .
marko 12-30-2009, 07:35 PM so it sounds like the cmr tune is where its at.
Off subject here but what is every ones oil pressure at idle?

Got it. I must've missed the SC part. So I assume it's a different diameter and pushes more air. See what you learn reading this forum... :thinkerg:

1BAMFR 12-30-2009, 08:09 PM Back to the original Question........
03' Cobra (lightly modded) VS. Stock JeepSRT8
IMO
From a dig and Mustang on street tires= Jeep will murder the Mustang
From a dig and Mustang on slicks at track and guy can drive= Mustang will murder the Jeep
From a roll= Probably a good race
At any given red light(normal situation) and the Mustang is on street tires= Jeep will murder it again
Isn't this fun????

03-04 cobras are supercharged from the factory and unlike the GT's they have 4 valve heads but the big difference is they have cast iron blocks and forged cranks so they can handle decent boost without changing anything else. They can go low 12's easily and its cheap too.
I really want to run a stockish Jeep with my Mustang: 1/4 and roll race to see how we match up.

Yes, smaller pulley makes the blower spin faster, pushing more air into the motor....which creates more boost/power. A re-tune and maybe a colder spark plug would be a good idea if you do a smaller pulley. more air needs more fuel to be effective and safe.

Haven't really followed Mustangs so they all look similar to me. Did pass a yellow one with big black stripes the other day. I noticed he was slowing down and rubbernecking as I approached. But I wasn't broken in and probably wouldn't have raced. But you never know. ;) So it seems from this and other threads, the Cobra and Shelby are the ones to worry about, more so the latter.

Similar to re-jetting a 2 stroke carb. That's where most of my modding has been. I'm a complete newbie when it comes to big hemis. But I'm learning a lot from this site.
Thanks all for your patience!

SVT_GT500 12-31-2009, 08:47 AM If you get a pulley, you need colder plugs, a tune, and a bigger heat exchanger =)

Pretty much. I have a 2000 GT with all the bolt ons, cams, ported heads, and gears. It only makes 300 rwhp and does high 12's @ 109-110. It would probably be a lot quicker with slicks since my 60's are 1.9 but its all good

LOL
Chris Hull@TTC 01-01-2010, 09:30 PM I love modded Mustangs!! Especially from a roll!! Have yet to see their tailights!!

Agreed. I also have both. The Cobra needs a really good driver and good tires to hook at all. You might have him in the 1/8.
