 Looks like I'm going to have to pull the intake manifold off this winter and clean it out, then re-install it. And add a catch can of course! :D

This wouldn't have caused any permanent engine damage....would it have?

For comparison:

BlackJeepSRT's intake manifold after 15K, 1K with a catch can. This was considered unacceptable.

(Tom from MHP) Toml08's beautiful, squeeky clean intake manifold. This is how it should look! (This was after 2800 miles with a catch can obviously)

How do you clean the intake? Do you have to remove the whole damn thing of can you simply use a lint free rag and shove it in there? Then spray some throttle body/intake cleaner down the thing.

You could probably do that if it's not too bad. Mine just looks so bad that I want to pull it off and do a nice thorough job.

It can't be too harmful or they would come with a catch can, I would think. It probably isn't the best for it, but doubt permanent damage has occured. I am not a mechanic though...

Get a long straw and start sucking.:D

jk, its probably best to remove the whole manifold.

i would not worry about it, if you are putting a catch can on now than the remaining residue should remove itself shortly.

Looks typical but just clean it up and let the catch can do its thing ;) I ziptied a rag to a plastic rod and cleaned the back with out taking it off--just make sure the rag is really secure so it doesn't fall off........

No cars come with catch cans and the vehicles all suck up their own oil for as reason....emissions

That's how the vehicle was made why would it cause damage?

it really doesn't cause any damage, paul's right....engines have been made this way for a long time and although I'm not sure if anyone's tried to prove that it may cause long term effects, there are lots of cars running around with over 150k(or more) and still running just fine.
The reason the catch can is beneficial is because it catches the oil that finds its way into your manifold(some sticks to the inner walls, some makes it into the combustion chamber)
Oil doesn't combust very well at all, and when inside the combustion chamber with fuel and air, it can cause more violent combustion...which the vehicle senses and pulls timing accordingly. Take the oil out of the combustion equation, and you dont have to worry about detonation as much.
You wont really notice the difference, but your car will be happy and it makes the car much easier to get a perfect tune if you decide to do so.

This is good to hear from everyone. It is quite scary to look at though! So pulling the whole thing off to clean it would be excessive and I should be okay cleaning it out while it's still attached?

you could do it either way. It's not very complicated to remove the manifold...You'll probably get it much cleaner that way.
But you can also just "mop" up the oil in the bottom of the manifold like others have suggested, and over time the runners will somewhat clean up on their own.
No such thing as excessive when taking care of your motor! :)
