: Should I Be Worried?
PsychoSRT8 03-30-2007, 09:36 AM ok this morning i left for work and about 10 min in my "malfunction indicator light" came on. i had another 15 miles to go so i continued; it drives fine and i cant feel any differance. called my dealer and they can't get me in untill monday. how can i find out what's going on? (keep in mind i don't know much about cars) all input will be greatly appreciated.
yooperone 03-30-2007, 09:44 AM Have you tried shutting the engine off and restarting to see if the Check engine light resets?
PsychoSRT8 03-30-2007, 09:59 AM yeah i tried that a couple of times; didn't help.
This thing is as bad as a check engine light on a 83 Caprice. It means OBD II detected a fault. You need to go in to have them turn it off. They will say nothing is wrong.
PsychoSRT8 03-30-2007, 10:33 AM i hope it's something minor u know. wish there was an easy way i could fix myself

If it were me I guess I'd call other dealerships to see if someone had time to trow a scan tool on it and see what kinda code its showing. Would tell you if it were serious
or not could be anything tripping the check engine light.
Is it still in warranty ?
PsychoSRT8 03-30-2007, 11:00 AM yeah i only got 6600 miles on it. got it in Nov.. i'l cal the other dealership and se what they can do. thanx

As long as it is in warranty you would think your dealer would of at least TRIED to get you in for a scan. considering what you just paid them for that rig.
Only takes a few min to hook up....
jlandbl 03-30-2007, 11:25 AM Did you check to see if your gas cap is tight? This can activate the CEL.
PsychoSRT8 03-30-2007, 01:38 PM ok just got back from the dealer... they said i probably filled "bad" gas and they cleared the warning light. that weird though cause i ONLY fill up SHELL 91.
and thanx for all your help boyz.
PsychoSRT8 03-31-2007, 10:23 AM aaannnnddd the light's back! guess i have to wait a couple of days to go to MY dealership
Zookeeper 04-04-2007, 01:50 PM I just got back a week and half ago to Portland after a two-week, 4,850-mile road trip in the Beast all over CA, AZ and NM. Driving from Phoenix to Tuscon that same light came on for me. It was disconcerting to say the least - I only had about 7,000 miles at the time. I took it into a dealership in Tuscon and they couldn't get me in but said it was likely fine - just a gas cap or bad gas thing. The light went off and then came back half way to Las Crusces later that day. Took it into a Dodge dealership - they thought it was bad gas, they cleaned out the space on top of the gas tank where gas goes to evaporate, light was off again. They said not to worry about the light - the SRT-8 was too new to have anything seriously wrong. Then later that day it came back on. It went on and off, I called my hometown dealership and they said it was nothing serious. I drove all the way back with the light on and it was running absolutely fine. Took it into the hometown dealership, they checked it out and said it was an octane error. That was cleared out and hasn't appeared since. But now the airbag light comes on after running about 10 minutes so she's going back in tomorrow.
Overall in the trip she performed great and was averaging 15.5-17.5 MPG.
promo718 04-04-2007, 01:59 PM what the hell is an octane error?
Zookeeper 04-04-2007, 02:04 PM Even the tech wasn't sure on that, but I believe it's essentially bad gas. The fuel sensors are pretty sensitive. I only put in the ultra-expensive stuff.
Eh2BRUTEh 04-04-2007, 02:06 PM what the hell is an octane error?
Its when the only bad gas you are consuming is from your dealers mouth because warning lights keep going off in your Jeep and they are scrambling to blame "bad gas" for the problem when they really have no idea.
PsychoSRT8 04-04-2007, 03:45 PM well to update you guys on my situation..... took it back to the dealership (mine this time) on moday. after 2 days they called me and said they will need my car for the week (my remote start won't work, so they ordered a new modul for it. my dash readings were not communicatin eather) BUT i didn't get a chance to talk with the tech. just the rep so i donno exactly waht's going on. all i know is i'm stuck w/ a rental till next week.
Zookeeper 04-05-2007, 04:16 PM The airbag light thingee has been taking care of. They said the seat had to be recalibrated. I guess this happens with Grand Cherokees have this happen somewhat often.

PsychoSRT8 04-06-2007, 11:18 AM UPDATE.. got the truck back yesterday and all was fine FOR THE 1ST 10 MILES then light came back. took it in today and just got a call that my cat. converter is bad and they ordered a new one (have to wait a week) so let's see what happens next.
PsychoSRT8 04-06-2007, 11:20 AM oh one more Q. i'm not a car wiz. they said i can drive the car around like this till the parts come in. what do u guys think? is it ok to drive w/ a bad cat. converter?
OurZoo 04-06-2007, 11:31 AM That sux Ike! Sorry you are having all these issues.
PsychoSRT8 04-06-2007, 11:37 AM thanx andrew...

I guess I wouldn't unless it's that or walk but as long as they give you a loaner i guess I wouldn't... A bad catalytic converter can be alot of things but usually what goes wrong is some kind of restriction loose baffle etc and that could be really tough on your engine if driven too much in that condition, due to excessive backpressure..
IMHO:D
