I had my Transer Case fluid changed today for the first time at 25000 kms
(16000 miles). It wasn't scheduled to be done until 50000 kms but because of everything I have read here I decided to do it early. Holy crap--it is BLACK!
The Shop foreman told me not to worry, that the ATF+4 type of fluid turns black (it is a "characteristic) and it isn't a sign of it being 'burnt,' and that you can't judge it like the traditional types of fluids...

BS?

You'd better get a hold of the shop foreman and make sure that he didn't use ATF+4 as the replacement fluid!

I checked the receipt. They used Mopar NV146 (p/n 68001758AA). Maybe when I phoned back he confused my truck with a regular Cherokee.........?
So does his rationale fly for the NV146?

h*** no, since when does ATF 4 turn black, it is NOT its characteristic!!

yea the Mopar NV146 (p/n 68001758AA). will turn dark (black) but aslong as its still translucent your good. Put a bit on your fingers and you'll tell if its still translecent or burnt theres a bug diff.

Well it should be fine then, i know when I checked my fluid and it was overfilled and i then put the extra in a glass bottle and it looks exactly like yours, but still very translucent and clean no chunks or gunk in it. Where you having any probs w/ ur t-case ie binding up, extra noise etc
