: Got stuck in the snow, WTF?

We had 8 or so inches of snow and sleet on 3/16 and 3/17. My JGC SRT8 got stuck on my street and in my driveway. While stuck on the street my father in law went by in his Jeep Compass and my friend went by in his Toyota pickup (4wd) without any problem. While stuck in my driveway, my friend got out of his pickup to push me and noticed that while the rear wheels were spinning the front wheels were not turning at all! No codes or warnings appeared in the dash display. Today, the Jeep dealership hooked up the starscan and found no codes. They put it on the lift and got all four wheels to turn under power. WTF? The dealership said that there is nothing more they can do because they can't find any problems. I know our tires are not the best in the snow but how do 2 other vehicles with 4wd blow by me on the same street where I got stuck? I don't know of any way to identify the problem.

Hmmmm......very strange. I live in SE PA and got around pretty easily in the 4-5" of sleet we picked up in the same storm. Iwas actually going to make a post about how pleased I was with the performance of the GC and the OEM tires.

All I can say is it is much easier for any vehicle to get stuck in 6" of sleet rather than 6" of snow. Once you sink into that much sleet, it's like being stuck in quick sand :(

They also recommend putting it in autostick and starting off in 2nd. That's assuming your AWD is working as intended.

Did you leave traction control on? If so, that is probably why you were stuck. I put up a post in another thread that I drove home Friday night in like 6 inches of snow with no problem. This is true. Also, the tip about starting out from a stop in 2nd gear makes a huge difference.

I parked in my garage for the night and it was still snowing, actually ice/sleeting. Woke up Sat morning to 8-9 inches of snow/ice and my driveway plowed in at the end from the snow plows clearing the street. At the same time, my daughter was sick and needed to go to the Dr. right away. I didn't have time to snow blow the driveway. My wife and 2 kids got in the Jeep, I backed out of the garage hard, the Jeep stopped halfway out the driveway cause it sunk into the ice/snow. I shut off traction control and punched it in reverse and was able to pull out and over the plowed in portion at the end of my driveway. I was impressed.

The traction control was actually stopping the wheels from moving because it sensed spin. I used to have this problem on my BMW also so I knew to shut it off. I think this is what happened to you.

Very true about the traction control. Try turning it off if you get stuck. Had similar problem before in my 4Runner. Wouldn't climb snow covered hill as traction control continued to keep me from using max power. Turned off traction control, worked fine.

I had and have the exactl same problem... i got stuck in my drive way with no snow! just ice... our range rover and my friends acura TL (FWD!!!!!) no problem. i know i have a serious issue with my transfer case... i just need time to go in. may i suggest beat on it really hard. launch it every time you leave a stop... if its broke it will only get worse then you can have them fix it.

The owners manual even recommends turning off T/C in deep snow.

Traction control off, let some air out of the tires, 26 lbs will give you better
flotation in deeper snow. Works for me at Tahoe !!!

The Jeep mechanic and the service writer said that the 4wd system is performance oriented, not snow oriented, so it doesn't work the way we might expect from experience driving other 4wd vehicles. They said the 4wd system might not have engage dthe front wheels to protect the drivetrain! Oh well, at least I didn't wreck the damn thing!

Thanks for the tip on turning off the T/C, I will try that next time.

Are you sure BOTH front wheels weren't turning? It's an open differential, so only one would turn if it was spinning. If you only looked at one wheel, the other may have been spinning.
