If I bought an SRT-8 in a state such as Nevada, would I be required to pay sales tax in my home state? Perhaps I am wrong in my thinking and Nevada may not have sales tax on normal stuff but do on vehicles. Thanks in advance for the input.

What is your home state?

It is my understanding that either you and/or the dealer are supposed to report the purchase to your home state, regardless if you bought the car in a state that does not have sales tax.

I know the dealer that my father-in-law currently works for makes you pay them for your out-of-state sales tax, and then they send it directly to your state. However, he also told me that he has worked at other dealers where they leave it to you to report the purchase to your state.

So, I guess if you find a dealer that leaves it to you, and you decide not to report it, you could see what you can get away with. But I know in Pennsylvania, when you go to register your car, they send you a form with your registration that says "you should have paid $X in taxes...if you haven't please remit", or something to that tune...

I live in Indiana and purchased mine at a dealership in PA. I had to pay the Indiana sales tax (6%) at time of purchase to dealership. they then sent title and check for sales tax made out to Indiana BMV to take to BMV to get plates. I think it is law in PA to do it that way so each state may be different.

When you go to register it in your home state they will be able to determine whether or not you paid tax. They will get their $$$. I was able to avoid CA tax because I had owned it for exactly one year before I moved here. There is also a "gift" clause whereby if a family member gives you the vehicle or you buy it from a family member, there is no tax. Of course the assumption here is that they either didn't pay the tax or live in a state with no sales tax...... Be creative, there are ways to keep your hard earned $$$$.

I assume that because you are over in the sandbox that you are military. There is a non-resident military exemption you can apply for, but at a 4.75% sales tax for Utah I wouldn't compain too much. San Diego has a 8.25% average for example. Do a Google search for the exemption form.

Hollywood,

Where did you see the 4.75% sales tax? To my knowledge, the combined sales tax in UT is at 6.35%. This is the tax rate I would be paying right? I am currently in the military, but not over here with the military. I am here as a civilian and ETS in less than a month. If it is only 4.75%, than that would be great news.

I didn't notice that Utah adds like 3 other taxes. WTF is a use tax?? Anyway, the way I read it is that if you are stationed or employed by the gov't and Utah is not your home state of record you can apply for a sales tax excemption. You still might have to pay the other fees and taxes though.

You do have to pay taxes on it if you are in the military. I am in kuwait and I ordered one and when I pick it up in the states and register it I will have to pay taxes on it then.

In Arizona, if you want to avoid the sales tax on a vehical, you can by buying it used from an individual or family member. I bought my SRT8 in Chicago from an individual with 27 actual miles on it. I had it shipped to AZ. Saved $3200 bucks.

In others words, it must be titled in an individuals name from any state and no question will be asked. So buy a used low milage truck and save big.

Let me add that you have to title it in AZ. However, I think a few other states allow this to happen also.

Oregon = no sales tax.

Motor homes were huge sellers for a long time in Oregon until other states caught on and made the owners pay up. So if you live in Nevada, buy a Jeep in Oregon, you pay Nevada sales tax.

I think it's cheaper to pay the tax than to get residency in a state like Oregon and not pay the tax unless you want to buy a lot of things $$$.

I live in Utah and bought my Jeep in Wyoming. I paid the sales tax when I registered it. I don't think there is any way around it in this state.

When I lived in WA a local bought an $800K motohome in OR to avoid sales tax + HUGE lic. plate fee. He was caught in WA and the penalty was 3X the fee. It came to over $130,000.00 to get the plate on it... for 1 year!!!!:eek:
