Running a Wix filter, and Motorcraft Racing full synthetic 5w50. My catch can, as mentioned before, had me worried with 0w40 Mobil. Puked lots of oil through the catch can, over 1 quart in 3,000 miles, and it glowed with copper contaminents every few hundred miles I cleaned it out. Now? decided to use 15w50 Mobil, but the 15w is too thick for the puke cold climate I get up here in garbage toilet land.

Anyways, decided to get the Ford GT/GT-500 Racing 5w50, read on BITOG it's an extremely good quality oil. End result? 1,500km's (940 miles) so far. Increased 6psi of oil pressure, dropped 7c oil temp under 68mph cruising speed, running slower drops oil temps even more, idling only takes a few minutes to match coolant temp. 0w40 wouldn't do that in my srt8.

The catch can, collected approx 16-18ml TOTAL, about 20x less than I should of so far, and the copper, I might of seen 3 particles. Every time I've pulled the can off, it was glowing with copper, literally, I could even see it in poor lighted conditions. No reduction of copper particles each time I looked, it was really bugging me. Now I need a LED pen light to find anything, and no guarantee it's not left over copper from the last time I dumped it out since I never sprayed it clean. Also, no where near the oil smell when I crank it open for a "carbon clean" on the highway.

Completely impressed, and cheaper than the 0w40 too. Along with the -42 pour point so I can use it all year, I've found my srt8 oil, even though it's Ford.:) I got a few pics, too tired to post 'em tonight.

Oil is copper-free

Again, a pic like this with the flash would leave it glowing. Look maaaa, no copper!!!

You should get it analyzed at your next change.

I got the 0w40 analized, you could roll the copper in your fingers, they said it was great?!?!?!?! This oil still looks the same as what's in the bottle.

sorry if this is a dumb question where does the copper come from?

From pennies.........duh!

The only thing I can think of, is the copper is coming from worn out engine bearings. BUT, that would mean the bearings are gone and a major failure is about to happen... and chances are, this isnt the case.

So, honestly, I have no idea where that copper is coming from! Oil filter maybe? Im scratching my head here..

is anyone else thinking... all of the above things could be bad? you are using a higher viscosity oil so more pressure (at the gauge) but what about at the head? it isnt all about pressure, what about flow?

im not saying the oil sucks but maybe there is more to the story... it is also getting cooler outside (at least here) so maybe thats why the temp is down? it would just be hard for me to say that i dumped oil in and everything is better...

copper comes from the bearings... and it is pretty normal... i mean to an extent... if you have grams of it then it is bad but usually during break in youll have some

Sorry guys, didn't see the replys, and no I haven't been doing crack! Oil pressure was not the goal, most of what occured was not, just a reduction in copper. Oil flow is very good, the startup is much quieter compared to the 0w40, it's clear pressure is built and top end is lubricated quicker when the oil is settled on the bottom. Cooler temps, I did the swap Sept 5th, I drove back to town the next day, I knew I would change oil that day so I paid particular attention to my guages and readings before/after. 0w40 in the morning, 5w50 in the afternoon.

Is it all really good, or bad, I'm with you Amigo I have been asking the questions myself what is really happening that I need to run a heavier oil to get better function. I'm not the only one running a different viscocity though, the change is done for one reason or another. Maybe I have internal issues, but I still have warranty. my engine is long broken in, so I don't believe the copper is from that. All I know, I get cooler oil temps, almost no copper in the catch can, and 20x less oil in the can istelf, running this particular 5w50. I call that good, even impressive maybe.
