I have 16000 miles and my dealer and local shop told me I need a $1000 brake job. Why cant I just buy new pads ? Do I need pads and rotors ? Thanx for the help.

If you need brakes I would by the R1 concept slotted/ drilled rotors and the 2006 CTS-V pads for the rear. R1 is a vender here and charge 500.00 for all 4. The then you can buy the pads of your choice but everyone on here has been buying the Cadillac CTS-V pads for the rear because the do not squeal at all. I just installed pads and rotors on my Beast and I am very happy with them. Plus I am squeal free :D Good luck!

PM a member named R1concepts on here. They are listed as a vender on this forum. I just bought mine 2 weeks ago and they look and perform great. For the rear paads I installed the 2006 Cadillac CTS-V akebaneco pads that I found on track racks website. Fo the fronts I went with the Hawk Ceramic pads, which Tire rack carries. The only thing with those is that they don not grab as good as the stock pads, but I was willing to give that up in return for a dust free wheel. because as a Jeep owner we all know that the stock pads create dust on your wheels like a mofo. Good luck man!

The pads are actually the most expensive. Over $800 just for pads! The rotors are cheap, only $500 for all 4.

Best bet is to go with the R1 rotors deal and get the CTS-V rear pads.

Did you find the "$1000 brake job" at the dealer? That would explain why it was so much. The pads are around $800 and the rotors around $500.

Go with R1. ;)

If you contact R1concepts.com directly, tell them you are a forum member, they have posted here that they'd cut us a deal on a rotors&pads package. I am looking at the xdrilled/slotted, and the newer Hawk LTS pads all the way around. (The LTS are quoted as being low dust and good for the street..) They carry several different pads for the SRT8 Jeep... their site may not have them all listed. Call.

Measure the thickness of your rotors first to see how worn they really are. (you'll need a caliper/vernier for precise #s) There is a spec for how thin the rotor can go. You may be able to get buy with having a shop turn the rotors and just new pads... if you are not chomping at the bit to spend $500 for slots & holes. And you may or may not need both front & rear pads. Dealer just wants to sell you new parts... Just double check anything the dealer tells you.

Maybe it's just me but I'd rather go through 16 sets of pads and clean my wheels every now and then before spending $800 for one set....and still have to clean my wheels.

I hope you were joking with the $800 (street) pads.

EBC makes "red stuff" pads that make very little noise and less dust, they are VERY grabby! Just got some on my car for about $130 for the fronts.
They also make rotors that are slotted and dimpled (instead of drilled all the way) might want to check them out... EBC makes great brake pads and rotors for bikes and bicycles too!

Stillen quoted me $120 for front set, $111 for rear set.. $331 TOTAL for the Hawk LTS pads. I talked to one of their brake techs and he was a big supporter of the new Hawk LTS pads... (Some of the other Hawk pads have had mixed reviews). I don't have them yet, but thats what I am buying after reading all the posts. Plus I am a fan of matching pads front & rear composition wise. (I have 16k on my jeep, and don't 'need' either just yet)

R1 claims they can beat other's prices, especially when selling you a package... should be even less than Stillen's prices.

The R1 rotors look to be very high quality... nicer than stock, and coated everywhere but the wear faces... thus no rust. Up to you if you need/want new rotors. You may not have worn out your OEM rotors yet. Measure first. I 'want' the R1 rotors.. and can't wait to ditch the factory dusty as hell pads... Supposedly the LTS pads give equal to stock braking and nearly no dust. For street use you want your first stop to be the best. Track pads are designed to fade less, but need heat in them (i.e. several stops) before really biting... not good for the street.

For me, I'll be doing the work, and if I am going to take everything apart to do pads... I might as well spend the $450-500 for rotors while I am in there working on it.

Thanx for all the info and good luck. I wish i could do it myself and save a few bucks. How much you think an auto shop would charge 200, 300 bux ?

BTW.. I believe it was "Steve" at R1 who posted here and offered the R1 discounts...

Find yourself any good performance shop, they will have zero problems working on Brembo brakes. Use them in the future when the dealer is trying to scare you out of your money.. If it takes a shop more than 30min a corner they are doing something wrong. 'Should' be a $200 job. You may want them to bleed the brakes while they are at it... Few more bucks.

P.S. Ask R1 to send you the 'bedding in' instructions when you get your new pads / rotors. Couple hard stops at 30mph, couple hard stops at 60mph, etc. Find a deserted flat stretch of road. And DO NOT sit with your foot on the brake while coming home after heat cycling the new rotors.. Put it in park at the light. If you hold the pads down on a super hot rotor, you will metallurgically harden that part of the rotor... likely causing a plusation later as they wear.

Yeah, look at all the brake dust with Knuckles in his sig pic! Take it easy with the brakes. :p

Ummm.... his wheels are powder coated, not brake dust. At least they better be! Cause if they're not, CLEAN THE DAMN JEEP!!!!

To the OP..... why are they telling you that you need brakes? What are they doing? I got 52K out of my orig. brakes.

^ I was only kidding.

And I said at the dealer, so naturally that is stock pads. I said go with R1 rotor setup for $500. The CTS-V pads (rear only) are only $80 + shipping. Don't read too much into what I say. ;) Stock OEM pads are crazy expensive, hence your "$1000 brake job" tab!

Chris is right, stock pads run close to $800. Fronts alone retail for nearly $500.

The stock rotors CANNOT be turned. SRT does not approve of it. They require rotor replacement with each pad change.

And stop *****ing about 16k miles. I got 15k and need new brakes all around.

Chris is right

You're dammmn right! :D

So did you get rotors yourself yet?

i think one thing i've learned about having the jeep that i didnt realize when i was driving a car where rotors were 300 and pads were 100...

1. dont use your brakes if you dont have to! :)
2. dont hold you foot on the brakes after you use them hard...
3. try to let them air out as much as possible between uses...
etc.

the last thing you want to do is warp the rotors... just use good braking techniques and you can extend life a TON!

Whenever I have to get on the brakes hard and come to a light, I always pop it into N and take my foot off the brake. Brembo told me to do this back in 1996 with my Maxima Turbo. It prevents the hot pad from warping the rotor.
