: Google Ad's
Street WK 03-16-2007, 12:38 AM I own a small site and I display google ad's on my site also, but don't you tink there is a better place to put them than INSIDE PM boxes and INSIDE the actual posts within a forum?
I am not one to complain, but it makes the site look like a spam house.
Thanks,
Nick
GodfatherSRT8 03-16-2007, 01:47 AM very annoying. I liked it way better before.
Rick G 03-16-2007, 04:29 AM It is kind of foolish.

Ditto, particularly the moving one from Edge. Is there not a better way that might be considered?

I'm working on finding out an answer for you guys.
jlandbl 03-16-2007, 08:56 AM Someone's gotta pay for the site.
Dr.Steve 03-16-2007, 09:06 AM Someone's gotta pay for the site.
agreed, but it was nice to have it pristine and clutter free while it lasted!
Street WK 03-16-2007, 09:58 AM Someone's gotta pay for the site.
It's not expensive. I am overcharged and I only pay $15/month for my forum. Plus forum sponsors pay them. ;)
AlexT 03-16-2007, 11:33 AM An easy solution is to do what I do.
Run Firefox as a browser, and use the AdBlockPlus add-on. The first time I saw the google ad in this forum, I right clicked on it and used the filter and a wildcard to remove it. Haven't seen a single one since.

ekool 03-16-2007, 12:28 PM Unfortunately it is a balancing act we have to do to keep members happy and pay the bills :)
We are always open to suggestions, ideas, criticisms etc on how to improve the site.
I am going to work on removing them from the private messages as well, just gotta figure that out.
We are thinking about offering a premium membership for around $20 to $30 / year which would remove some of the ads and also give alot of other benefits too. Would that be something users are interested in?

Depends.
If the additional benefit you get is access to some Subscriber Only forums I'm against it. Boards I've been a part of that start to segregate content based on payment tend to lose good posters that don't feel like paying. The last thing you should be looking for at this stage of your board is anything that's going to drive any posters away.
What I have seen work, especially with a smaller board like this, is to throw up a paypal address and let some of your regular users make voluntary donations to help you defray some costs. I'm sure many of us would be happy to help out.
Alex
ekool 03-16-2007, 12:38 PM We dont accept donations and I hope that I never will. The premium membership would include a few perks like @cherokeesrt8.com email address, increased private message quota, increased photo gallery space, supporting member image, increased attachment space, etc.
Just small nick nack stuff like that.
Street WK 03-16-2007, 12:39 PM ekool,
Not to get personal but I dont understand the bills? Other than the one time vBulletin fee and your monthly hosting fee what bills do you have? I'm all ofr advertising as you do a service for us enthusiats.
Check out my site, www.**************** to get an idea for add placement.

I'm all for increased PM storage :D Sign me up!
ekool 03-16-2007, 12:43 PM Well unfortunately vbulletin is not just a one time fee. Even if you "OWN" the license you have to renew it every year.
I also have to buy servers. Hosting isn't cheap. In addition, this is not my only site so I also have employees. I also value my time and like to get paid for the countless hours I spend working on things. Oh yeah, I like food too so I need to eat.
This forum is free to the members, I dont think having some ads is too much to ask in exchange for that service.

Mango 03-16-2007, 12:44 PM I'm totally down for some kind of special "supporting member" designation. I'd happily support the site.
ML SRT8 03-16-2007, 12:50 PM I am mainly a surfer here - but I do check in every day to stay informed on current topics. I love machines and am hard-core about my SRT8 (stock with CAI and Corsa). I am totally not a fan of spam or of ads in general, nor do I like to have to engage in certain tricks or proceedures to manuever around them. It wouldn't be so bad if they were on topic (SRT oriented), but they are not. At best, they are somewhat related to our trucks.
I personally think they really take away from the experience. Does anyone approve of them? Frapper spammed me bad, and now we're getting Googled at every thread click. As if anyone here needs help to find Google, or a jeep, or a mustang, or a superchip ....... Also, from what I've read here in the forum, does anyone recommend the superchip yet (which I think popped up as an ad a few minutes ago)? I thought there was still a way to go before they cracked the Jeep's code and until then, it would be best to wait? If so, why would a responsible forum be promoting them in the form of an ad right up front.
My 2 cents

Well lets face it... who here wants any ads? I mean if everyone had their choice there would not be a single one. I wish everything in life was free, but its not. Like I said tho, there is a balance we must maintain.

As long as you don't make any of the content dependent upon subscriber status I'm all for it.
Why the anti-donation stance?

I would much rather give someone some benefits in exchange for money rather then have someone just out and out give me money. I feel better about the exchange, as if I've given them something for their money and they thought it was a good deal and elected to purchase it.
A slight but important difference in my book.
maxxjeep 03-16-2007, 01:14 PM I think I am overly fortunate here.....I have never seen any ads in posts. Ever.
I do run FireFox, but never had to click to filter them out.
Hmmm....

Yeah - and if you know the joke's punch line "now that we know what you are (a prostitute), then all we have to do now is negotitate the price" then you know what I mean. What's next? Adjustable rate mortgages and dancing shadows?
Uh oh - did I just step in it? Sorry, couldn't help myself. But I did like hanging around here, and like I said, it's an ad at every thread click. Can't you just drop it in our lap on the way in (and maybe on the way out) and let us enjoy the stay while we're here? Everything seems to be: Internet traffic, clicks, revenue, spam, virus - I didn't think this was all business - but then again, that was my mistake. I thought this was a group of guys who were passionate about their vehicles, and the person (people) in control could just possibly be exploiting that to make a buck. That's not a knock - It's the American way. By-the-way, I'm not against prostitues. Some people need them - luckily, I do not.
promo718 03-16-2007, 01:57 PM it really doesn't cost much to host low traffic sites such as this one. i'm sure it pays for itself via ads.. and then some. as for having members pay for certain extra privileges, i don't think too many people would go for it. i know i wouldn't.
if you ever run into financial difficulty running the site, let us know - i think i'm not the only one here who has the bandwidth & hardware to keep the site up and running.

ResumeSpeed 03-16-2007, 04:11 PM Add me to the list of people who HATE the "in-your-face" web advertising. It's starting to get out of hand on so many web sites these days and is very annoying and distracting. Between excessive advertising and large signatures some of the message board sites have become so cluttered as to require three times as long to read the content.
I certainly understand the need for advertising as long as it it kept out of the main "content" area. Many sites have pulled this off very well, no reason that it cannot be done. As for movings ads, pop-up ads, and those underlined key word link ads, no thanks, I despise all of those methods and rarely visit sites that employ those despicable forms of advertising.

Street WK 03-16-2007, 11:05 PM I don't get it. I pay $15 a month for my site... Granted it only has 512 members... but we have almost just as many posts :)
