: Burning smell coming from my car
jordo9998 03-15-2007, 06:58 PM This is really weird and wanted to know if anyone else has had this prob...
the past 2 weeks or so every time I punch my car to around a 100 or so driving in stick mode (shifting and driving above 4000 RPM's for a period of time) then when I slow down and come to a stop or while i'm driving, I can smell a burning rubber like smell coming out of my AC, or could be from somewhere else... the coolent is good, engine temp is good, I don't think it could be coming from the breaks... the oil is still fairly clean. i use the mobile1 oil... I don't know if i'm frying my engine or what, but the burning smell is kinda strong... the only mod i have is the mopar CAI. i have about 7200 miles on my beast now... it's about 7mo old..
anyone know what it could be?
thanks.
split2112 03-16-2007, 09:20 AM mine has the burning smell when i punch it too...i think theres something leaking onto something else (vague enough for you?). Hasnt seemed to cause any problems, but I'm gonna have them check it out next time I take it in.

When I had the burning smell, it was oil leaking out of the transmission and transfer case, because of a bad extension shaft seal and transmission vehicle speed sensor o-ring. The smell was from the leaking transmission fluid, out of the transmission/transfer case, dripping onto the crossmember, then dripping onto the top of the exhaust. Only happened after driving it a little hard, and you smell it when the truck is stopped (I guess when you're driving, the smell blows away. On stops, it just goes straight up).
Look under the truck, at the crossmember. It's between the front wheels. Then look at and around the exhaust pipe there and the transmission. No need to jack the truck up. Just look under with a flashlight.
Good luck.

His is a seperate issue, every SRT8 owner I know who has a Jeep has this smell when you nail it as do I. I have gone under mine checked EVERY seal etc etc etc, im not leaking anything, no dripping etc.
My best guess would be 1 of the gaskets on the engine when heated up emits a smell and the a/c system sucks it in and thats what were smelling.
ibbigc 03-23-2007, 05:59 PM I had the same smell with my GJSRT8. Took it to the dealer with no luck. They blamed it on the exhaust burning in. Left the beast parked in the garage for a few days and when I moved it, I noticed tranny fluid on the floor. Took it to the dealer, tranny seal leak. They replaced the seal and no more smell.
Razorecko 03-23-2007, 06:39 PM I had the same smell and under the same conditions (WOT), than my service awd starting blinking on randomly. Went to the dealer and they replaced the busted actuator in the transfer case and now...no more burnt smell....
jaybruce 03-27-2007, 10:29 PM I have no smell and hit high speeds every day.
jordo9998 03-28-2007, 03:45 PM yeah but i have over 8000 miles on my car and hit high speeds everyday.
how many do you have on yours?
AFSurg Junky 05-17-2009, 04:41 PM So is the concensus that the burning smell at high speeds is normal or abnormal ?
SoonToBeSRT 05-18-2009, 02:25 AM haha seriously, this is one of the leats organized and helpful threads thanks to responses like, i hit high speed all day ok, and then some list probs others contradict them, some says its ok, other say no, my best guess, when this doesnt help out lol, go to dealer, (if your under warranty, which hopefully you are) have them fully check it all and replace anything they suspect of being cause. Then re check and see where you are, if still there keep playing until its fixed, if no fix, you can then assume its normal if there is no out fo the ordinary wear and tear, no problems = no need to fix lol, just an odor, put some fresheners or open windows lol, may help haha who knows
flomax 05-29-2009, 10:10 AM Had the same issue! The rear pinion seal ended up going. Dealer replaced under warranty. The fluid was splashing up on exhaust pipes....hence the burning smell
