: STARSCAN for towing harness ?
DavesSRT8 03-15-2007, 11:31 AM I wired up my rear bumper lights and since I was missing the 2 relays, bought and installed them, yet no lights or power to tow harness. when i looked at the documentation for the MOPAR GC wiring harness (which includes relays)
http://site.************.com/guide/82209770.pdf
i see that a STARSCAN tool is needed "so Front Control Module is reconfigured and recognized the trailer tow kit". I called my dealer and he confirmed. Not sure why it works for some folks, but I am going to dealer to see if it works.

Xavier 03-15-2007, 05:55 PM Are you saying that when you tried to hook up to your four point electrical fitting, nothing worked?
Hotscott7 03-15-2007, 09:30 PM Try the fuse under the engine bay i think its a 10 amp
DavesSRT8 03-16-2007, 04:41 AM 1) YES, Dealer confirmed. Before I even hooked up any lights, I checked and had both relays missing. Bought them and installed in power center. Checked all fuses (yes, the 10 amp too) - fine. no power to rear harness
2) noticed on the website install instructions for a MOPAR harness that STARSCAN was required. My build date is 02/09/07, in case that matters or if anyone else is having problems. Called dealer, and they said same. for things like fog lights (i.e. if you have a GC and wanted to install fogs because it did not come with them), rear towing harness, etc. you need to tell the computer to enable the relays in the power center. When i check for power at the relay center with truck on and lights powered up, no power (tried hitting brake, turn signals, etc). so apparently the PCM has a feed to trip the relay.
will let everyone know. we know a Dodge dealer mechanic so we can get hooked up with him for a STARSCAN update. looks like about 1 minute of work.

This is interesting....My 06, build date of 01-05-06 came with all relays except center one...(fourth from left or right) marked RR wiper, RR fogs.
Both factory pre-wired OEM 4 pin, and 10 to 7 pin connectors were hot. Go figure. Would be interesting to know reasoning, and when change requiring use of STARSCAN was implemented.
Edit here...just noticed that you said..."install instructions for a Mopar harness that STARSCAN was required"......Okay, but if that is the correct terminology, I am now more confused. No one is trying to "INSTALL" a Mopar harness for towing as it is already there in an OEM configuration. Was yours not? May be semantics here, but in your case as presented, seems correct word should be for "ACTIVATION" of a Mopar harness . If you don't mind, let everyone know what the final outcome of your situation is.
(okay, last edit....I just looked at pdf from ************........That appears to be to install a complete harness to a vehicle that has absolutely nothing from factory....Perhaps then you would need to activate with STARSCAN, but I can not see that being required for existing harness. I am fairly confident that we would have heard of situation from one of the many of us who have been towing, and or activated the rear fogs over the last 12 months. Give us an update when you learn anything.
DavesSRT8 03-16-2007, 06:35 AM NO, i have a harness; sorry for confusion.
What I researched was a 4-pin MOPAR harness for Jeeps that did NOT have a 4 pin (ours does; this is NOT for our Jeeps) . It comes with a complete harness assembly to front of vehicle, and plugs into the rear tails to send a signal (see the link I posted). The last step, if you read the link, is to install the relays, the 10 amp fuse and use a STARSCAN to enable the relays.
My Jeep had zero relays. It also has no power to the relay contact to enable the relay itself. I believe this is the reason I am getting no power to the rear harness when I put a gage on the harness itself where you plug into.
I am hoping the STARSCAN enable turns on the relays so I get power. Otherwise, I'm going to ditch this mod.

Dave, I am on the same boat. I posted in the other thread. Mine was build on 2/1/2007. In the row of microrelays going across (there should be 7 of them), mine is missing, left to right, the 4th, 5th and 6th one. 2 of those control the left and right turn/brake for the trailer. I got 2 microrelays off a friend's SRT8 (his build date is 11/2006). His was shipped with the left and right trailer relays there, but the last one on the right wasn't there.
On my truck, after I did the harness install, without the left and right trailer relays, the 4 pin trailer harness had power going to one of the wires, which I'm guessing is for the parking lights. Plugged in those 2 relays, nothing. I am guessing it really does need that starscan thing. I'm going to a call a friend with one to see if there really is a setting on it. I'll post my findings. Hopefully it'll be later tonight.

Stopped by my dealership this afternoon and talked to the shop foreman who is also my tech. I explained the situation as best as I could. Particularly as he is familiar with my vehicle and tow set up.
He said that there are so many software functions, updates, and issues with DCX that it is continually frustrating for them. With more to come for next years models.
In a nut shell he indicated that with the changes since my build date it does require a hook up to STARSCAN to activate many functions. Examples he gave were towing, add on fog lights, mirror tilt etc. Even if relays are in place, they have to be kind of "told to function" via a software update involving at least two modules. So, I am assuming that if relays and harness are in place, a hook up to STARSCAN should allow power to go to where it is needed. I certainly hope so. I would also ask any dealer to flash it for free. Nicely of course, simple pointing out that the harness is an oem piece and you would like it to function. It is a quick process. Be nice, but go for it.
Good luck.
9900rpm 03-16-2007, 02:57 PM Just found out my friend's unit is not the starscan. It's not the CAN compliant one. Only works for up to 2006 :(
Going to try and swing by a dealership to see if they can do something for me.
DavesSRT8 03-16-2007, 05:01 PM From what I am finding out, there's lots of things STARSCAN is needed for now. I have a friend who is a Dodge tech who has access to tool. As soon as this stupid ice storm ends, I will give it a try. Sounds like there's going to be other folks affected if this works. Probably why they did not bother putting in the relays since nothing would work anyway.
Stay tuned
Dave
9900rpm 03-17-2007, 01:48 PM OK, just got back from the dealership. He looked at me like I had 3 heads when I explained everything, about how the truck came without relays, and that I got them, and the trailer harness has to be enabled with their STARSCAN tool.
Took the guy maybe 8 minutes to do, start to finish. That's including walking through the snow covered parking lot. He did it for free. It was actually the service advisor that did it, not a mechanic. If you're reading this, thanks!!
So yeah, the trailer harness works. Right after he enabled it, the rear fog lights worked (I already had them wired up to work with the brake/turns).
Again, mine is a 2007 model, build on 2.1.2007.
DavesSRT8..... when you go get yours done, can you check to see if there are other functions that can be enabled? One of the things I'd like is that outside mirror tilt down feature when reverse is selected. I hear that it can be enabled on the 2006's. Not sure about 2007.
DavesSRT8 03-17-2007, 02:46 PM Excellent ! I'm glad it was what I suspected. Sounds like they started disabling alot of stuff in 2007. I will go through some documentation I found to see everything we have that can be enabled.
THanks again !

Keep me posted. I would like to know about other features that can be enabled. I'm really hoping that the reverse outside mirror tilt down one is there somewhere.

I don't think any '07 has been able to enable that, so I'm not holding my breath.

Am I reading this right? I need to "enable" my trailer wiring if I decide to pull a small trailer?
AlexT 03-20-2007, 06:43 PM This smells like some bean counter revenue generating driven idea.

My '07 is an early build (08/31/06) and I don't have any of those issues.
I hooked up the trailer connector to the bumper (NO EXTENDED WIRES) in less than 15 minutes and it worked perfectly. What are they up to??????
That said, I am shocked we have bulbs in the dead bumper light sockets. "Value engineering" must not of got that far yet!

DavesSRT8 03-20-2007, 06:59 PM possibly. put a meter on the harness and see if you get power. i did not. scan tool needed to enable relays to harness

DavesSRT8 03-22-2007, 04:37 PM Ok, went to our friend with STARSCAN, 2 minutes, lights are on now. So, for 07's, it seems you need relays and enable STARSCAN stuff.
and no, no mirror functions like 06. tech thought that because the rear camera package is enabled, no mirror enable for 07.s
well, at least we know how to turn on rear lights !
Dave
AGray34 03-17-2008, 02:26 PM That is wrong, I have an 07 and also had rearview mirror tilt enabled by my dealer, so it is possible on the 07.
What specifically do I need to ask my dealer to activate via starscan. I have everything in place, but the L and R are not getting any power, even with relays installed (that were missing)
What do I need to tell the dealer to specifically do, and also do I need an appointment for this or is it something that they can do on a walk in
DavesSRT8 03-17-2008, 03:02 PM print this out:
http://site.************.com/guide/82209770.pdf
and take it to dealer. near end of file is the instructions for Starscan
AGray34 03-17-2008, 09:12 PM thanks. I am going to bring that with me when I go to my appointment. Hopefully I can get it done fast with the starscan.
