: Hitting The Drag Strip for the First Time...Tips?
bcm0018 09-04-2009, 07:34 AM I have an 09 with volant CAI, magnaflow with rear muffler delete, and a CMR mail order tune and 800 miles on it. Going to the drag strip for the first time and was looking for any tips.
From searching and reading I've heard:
Skip burnout box
Put autostick in 1 and let it shift
Do a standing start or maybe jack up to 1200 RPM
I've heard to pull the ABS fuse (does this really improve times?)
Tire pressure 40 lbs front 36 rear ( I thought lower pressure would help with traction but never went with a car that had 4wd)
Low gas (1/8th tanks)
Thanks in advance!
pjs1965 09-04-2009, 07:50 AM Don't bother with the fuse one. Here what I did on my first track runs with the Jeep:
Don't run A/C.
Turn off ESP in staging lane.
Skip the water box.
Roll up your windows.
Put it in 1ST/Autostick
Stage/Pre-Stage
Here's where you can test out some launch scenarios:
Launch #1 -- foot on brake, no throttle -- as tree counts down, on the last yellow light, release the brake and STOMP the accelerator.
Launch #2 -- foot on brake, as the tree counts down, throttle up towards 2000 RPM on the last yellow >> release brake and STOMP the accelerator.
Launch #3 -- foot on brake, as the tree counts down, throttle up to 1800 RPM and hold, on the last yellow >> release brake and STOMP the accelerator.
[I had my best run on launch #2]
Don't forget your helmet and wear long pants and sleeved-shirt :D
If you can, mount a camera in the Jeep and take vids :D
Most of all, have fun!
jim383 09-04-2009, 07:59 AM Pulling the abs fuse helped me when i was bone stock 1 tenth but after the dyno cmr tune it was no help. The tire pressure is fine as i started with 32 and went up and the biggest improvment was when SARGE to me try 40/36 and that gets me 1.75/1.77 60'. EVERY THING ELSE IS FINE. Make dam sure you pull out the floormatts, rear lift lid and tarp thats 21 lbs as evey little bit helps. I do have OEM GY RUN FLATS TIRES AND MY RACE WT IS 5190. As far as the launch anything above idle i spun the tires. My times are in my sig below.
Matt McKenzie 09-04-2009, 08:04 AM I brake stomp to 2500...you will be nervous and anxious the first time down the track, after that it will be a blast and you will want to keep going...but be sure to ice down the block in between runs...hot lapping really slows these Jeeps down. Have fun and be safe...post up the times afterwards!

Thanks for the info! I have a camera that takes vids. Friends are going so I might get vids from outside the jeep.

Thanks! Been racing for a while but it will be the first time in the Jeep. I'm used to running my mustang which cant get out of the hole to save its own life but does good on the top end (12.8 @110). Maybe I'll bring both and let someone else drive the jeep...
Matt McKenzie 09-04-2009, 08:45 AM Cool beans, then you know what it is all about! The Jeep is wicked out of the whole!!!!!
bcm0018 09-08-2009, 07:31 AM I went 12.969 @ 104.9!!!
Matt McKenzie 09-08-2009, 08:29 AM Sweet time bro, way to go!!!!!!!!

compunow 09-08-2009, 10:34 AM How acurate is the in dash 1/4 mile time vs the track?
Tom
cobraguy 09-09-2009, 06:37 AM so your supposed to put it in 1 and let the jeep shift? is this correct? should u ever be shifting on your own?
jim383 09-09-2009, 06:56 AM so your supposed to put it in 1 and let the jeep shift? is this correct? should u ever be shifting on your own?
Letting it shift itself will shift just b4 it hits the rev limitor (about 5900 1-2 shift 6100 all others) this way theres no chance of short shifting as sometimes it will do in ( D ) MODE.

Never tried it so I cant help.

If your racing I would say no since once you kick it down with the autostick you can floor it and it will shift right before redline.

He is correct.

Tom
Mine is very accurate, within a 1/10th in the 1/4 and within 1 mph from my experience..
bcm0018 09-14-2009, 06:58 PM I tried out the dash last night. It said 12.9 @ 106 so it seems pretty accurate.
BOYCHIKS 09-14-2009, 07:11 PM A lot of nice techniques. Makes me want to go back to the track again!
Have fun and run some good times :D

Wait...so if i have i have the autostick in 1st...the trans will shift itself??? I've never tried this (i've never taken this to the track)...when i have it in 1st i feel like it hits the limiter...but doesn't shift???

Thats odd! I leave it in 1 and it actually short shifts 1st compared to the rest of the shifts. I was kinda wondering why it did that but was going to try a search first just havent yet.
