: Couple Questions about the Jeep SRT8...
nalinc23 09-03-2009, 09:54 AM Hey Everyone:
I currently own a Honda, previous car was an Infiniti G35 and I will have the Honda paid off early next year. I was thinking about a truck as a 2nd vehicle or SUV but don't want to deal with 2 rides at this time. The SRT8 Jeep seems like the perfect compromise and I had a few questions. I know noobs post threads like this all the time but I searched and nothing answered my questions specifically...
1. Can someone lay out exactly what changed from 06-08? I'm thinking I can only afford an 06 or 07 but still interested. My budget would be in the high 20's assuming I can get about $15,000 for the Honda or so.
2. I am really into car audio. Right now I have Memphis Pro components, Pioneer Touch screen etc etc. How is the Jeep's stock system? Highs, mids bass?
3. I know this truck gets bad gas mileage, I only drive about 10-12k miles a year so i'm not too worried. However, on the highway doing about 75 mph, what kind of mileage are you guys seeing? Could i ever hit about 18 mpg or so? I know around town is really bad like 13-14.
4. Practical question: How is this car with 4 ppl in it? How is the cargo area?
5. Last question. What year did the 7 year/70k mile warranty start? I heard it is very limited once you transfer it. Is this true? Just concerned about a couple people mentioning a weak center diff.
I'm excited to go from my torqueless wonder to something practical and packed with power, thanks for your help!!!

Mike_Levy 09-03-2009, 10:00 AM Gas mileage is worse then you're thinking. I'm lucky to see 10 in normal driving. I believe the EPA ratings are something like 11/14, on premium.
promo718 09-03-2009, 10:04 AM 4. Practical question: How is this car with 4 ppl in it? How is the cargo area?
cargo area is nice and big, but the rear bench will get uncomfortable for adults on long trips.

practical? haha.
barho 09-03-2009, 10:38 AM I was able to hit 18 on the highway before, but not too often.
Look to average 12mpg in typical driving conditions.

2. I am really into car audio. Right now I have Memphis Pro components, Pioneer Touch screen etc etc. How is the Jeep's stock system? Highs, mids bass? It depends on the radio in there. The stock Boston Acoustics is OK and the Kicker is an upgrade. Overall it is a pretty decent soud system but there is room for improvement.

I do about 50-50 city/higway driving and I'm average 12-13, I'm no longer stock. but it wasn't much better stock. The best I've seen on the highway is 15 since the mods.
4. Practical question: How is this car with 4 ppl in it? How is the cargo area?
As stated, the rear seats will not be comfortable on long trips for adults.
5. Last question. What year did the 7 year/70k mile warranty start? I heard it is very limited once you transfer it. Is this true? Just concerned about a couple people mentioning a weak center diff.
AFAIK, the 7/70 is not transferable. Depending on if you are staying stock or not, the center diff should hold up. The trans is more of a concern at higher power levels from what I've herd/read.
SRT-8RAT 09-03-2009, 11:17 AM I traded my 2001 comptech supercharged Honda S2000 in on my 2006 Jeep SRT-8.
The best all around ride hands down. Fast, hauls the fam. around and go's threw the snow great with snow tires.
Plus cops dont look at it cause they think its a Jeep with rims.
SRT8_Paratrooper 09-03-2009, 11:30 AM right now im getting 15.2 MPG on 93 Oct. mine though is pretty much stock (for right now atleast) and i drive 120 miles a day to and from work. so im still filling up every other day...but honestly i wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. just buy it...you wont regret it!

moleson10 09-03-2009, 02:38 PM On gas mileage, mine's pretty good. I average 13.5 driving 50/50 city/hwy. On the freeway @ 75 mph I get 17.
Concerning pracitcality, these things are not practical compared to something that actually is practical, but they are compared to owning 2 vehicles which is what you'd need to do what they do.
At the end of the day its about fun and enjoyment. That's where these things excel.
nalinc23 09-03-2009, 05:05 PM Thanks for all the info! Additional Question: Rubber i'm sure is not cheap, but how long can you expect to get out of a set of tires assuming you rotate them often and drive fairly normal?
LBCSRT8 09-03-2009, 06:04 PM The tires cannot be rotated as the front are a different size than the rear. Stockers last a while but there is a flaw with the inner front tires (Goodyear RSA's) and they go bad around 20,000 miles. You can get a new set of tires that will run you anywhere from $800-$1300 depending on what you choose to install. They come with runflats but many have gotten regular summer tires, as I have. Regardless of any cons about this vehicle, you'll have a blast with it! I still do 2 1/2 years later!:D
nalinc23 09-03-2009, 08:59 PM Thanks.
It is my # 1 choice now with an EVO X in a distant 2nd. As long as I can pay off the Honda as planned I am leaning that way assuming I can find exactly what I want but I guess it's really just a matter of me finding a decent deal on one with low mileage in the color I want, It doesnt look like there are that many packages or differences despite maybe navi and audio system.
Are HIDS standard? Even if this SRT8 is 20x cooler than my car I am used to HIDS and need them lol
4MuscleMachines 09-03-2009, 09:37 PM HIDs are not standard, they are an option.

At 75mph figure around 17-17.5 mpg (using CC) I have gotten over 18 but everything has to be just right. We Avg. around 13 mpg. everyday driveing.
Your pretty close on the Cost of buying an 06 or 07, try for an 07 with under 36,000 miles so you can use the warranty if needed.
There was never a 7-70 on an SRT, unless you buy a Chrysler Extended Warranty.
4 Big Adults, Cramped, cargo area is about the same as any SUV in the GCSRT8s Class. I've never had a problem.
Sound isn't bad with the MyGig Radio and the Standard Speakers but the Kicker Opional Speakers and Amps KICK ASS.

I'm not a huge sound guy but I have the premium sound system and I love it

I did a 45 mile trip the begining of the week, mostly open highway and reset the mileage and averaged 17 using cruise @65. My comute to work is 10 minutes and since then my average has dropped to 13
4. Practical question: How is this car with 4 ppl in it? How is the cargo area?
I took 5 on a 1.5 hour trip and had no complaints except one guy wished for more leg room (hes 6'1 and 240)

Do it I dont think you will regret it
YogiSRT8 09-04-2009, 07:23 AM HIDs were not available in 06-07 unless you do aftermarket which is pretty easy. 08-09 they were an option.
Gas Milage i get 16-17 doing 70-75mph
Been on a couple 4 hour trips with 4 adults and no real complaints.
Tires are expensive and like stated cant be rotated but the tread lasts for quite a while compared to a lot of fast cars because there is no spinning with AWD, my vette obviously eats tires a lot faster.
No warranty longer than 3/36 unless you pay for an extended warranty.

I think i've been convinced, thanks everyone. My Honda has been great, zero issues and I drive the hell out of it but ready to move on. Also the Honda was manufactured in Ohio and over 60% of the parts were made in America but I know what you're saying.
