: Heads and Cam vs Supercharger

Depending on what happens with the future of the Jeep SRT in 2012, I am probably going to keep my 06 so looking at modding options.

A few general questions as I am not sure the cost and HP differences between these options.

I would like general cost and HP of a good heads/cam package vs a nice supercharger kit. It would be for a daily driver and I am hoping I would be good with the stock tranny but I'm not sure if that would be the case.

This has been discussed on here numerous times. If you search you will find a few threads with helpful information in them.

I have been back and forth myself whether or not to bolt on a supercharger or do heads/cam/ported intake.

A quick rundown will look like this:

Vortech supercharger is the lowest priced of the bunch with the best results on numerous vehicles.

Vortech will run you somewhere between $5200 to $6200 depending on where you buy and what option (satin/polished) you pick. Labor can be as low as $800 and as high as $2000 depending on the shop. On average you are looking to pick up around 120-125hp at the wheels. Depending on supporting mods you will be running in the very low 12's or high 11's. The vortech comes with the predator programmer with cmr tune ready to install. If you have more than a catback then you will need a custom cmr tune.

Other superchargers include Techco (about $7500), RDP harrop blower ($8k ish?), or whipple ($7k ish)

Heads/cam/ported intake you will pick up at best 90-100 hp at the wheels. In the 1/4 with a good tune and cold weather you may break 11.99 but on average you will run 12.0-12.3 in the winter and around 12.5-12.6 in summer time. The install for this could be $1200 up to $2000. Then you have to decide where you want to buy the parts from. If you get mondellos your looking at $2500 for the stage 2 heads and around $1200-1400 for the ported intake manifold. I'm not sure on the cam price but most run around $450-500. Then you will need a custom CMR tune which will run in the $250 range and if you don't have the predator you will have to shell out another $325. PPP has a stage 2 kit with heads cam and ported intake that will run you around $3100 but I know of various people who have had to wait a long time to get the parts.

Best bang for your buck is the vortech. Both will perform nicely it just depends how far you want to go with it.

With a stock bottom end, your safest bet is heads/cam.

Vortech is a great company and produce a great product. I'm just giving my personal opinion.

Many are having great luck with both.

If my motor was stock and I could afford either the S/C kit or H/C.....I would go with the S/C any day of the week. You will notice more power gains with the S/C.

When my Jeep was N/A it was a beast with just the H/C on it too though (just not like running boost)

I'm running the stock bottom end for now, no problems

About how many miles have you put on your rig since installing the vortech?

The real question here is how long will your tranny last with the added power of the Vortech vs Heads/Cam.. you may need to figure in a beefed up transmission with the Vortech because of the extra amoung of HP and TQ. I know you can drive a few thousand miles with the Vortech without replacing the tranny, but those Charmin toilet paper clutches in the stock tranny will only last so long with 100+HP added wheel HP...

Heads and Cam might not be too much and just under the amount of power that will reduce the need for a costly built tranny

Just my $0.02

with head & cam no need to change the tranny ...

I would say around 5,000 miles and about 20 passes at the track

You'd be surprised how much a Bbill VB helps with high hp applications. There is a few 10 second rides running around on stock tranny's.

what about if i have Head/cam/vortech and SHR SIP, would i still need to change the stock tranny?

Eventually yes....the SIP improves shifting but doesn't strengthen tranny

Same with valve body....

The tranny needs to be built with high grade clutches etc

You can always spend a extra $600 on slugs and prob never have a problem as long as your tune is safe. I think Paul,Keoni and a few others have proven how stout our engines really are, a good question really is which is the weaker link the engine or the tranny ???

Eventually, but not immediately, and depending on how you drive, it could be a while.
