: 180 Stat Opinion??
tmm403 07-16-2009, 11:23 AM I have a stock 06 srt8 jeep and I just got the 180 stat. I was wondering if I will be ok if I just install the stat and nothing else? I read some guys installed it with fan mods but I dont have a predator yet..Would I be ok? or should I wait?
Mike_Levy 07-16-2009, 11:26 AM Won't be of much use without lowering the fan turn on temps. The coolant will be flowing, but without airflow theres no heat transfer.
cjg454ss 07-16-2009, 12:42 PM when driving it will run at 180, but when idling it will go up to where ever the stock fan temp setting is. i say go for it. driving at 180 is better than 200+,
i did a 180 stat and adjusted the fans down to 180 and my jeep runs 179-180 all the time, it seems to like it too.
boostdacr 07-16-2009, 12:51 PM How do you lower the fan speeds? Predator?
SRT8 4 J 07-16-2009, 12:59 PM How do you lower the fan speeds? Predator?
Yes via the predator....adjust your fan settings for both AC on and off.
tmm403 07-16-2009, 01:14 PM So I guess I should wait till I get the predator?????????
SRT8 4 J 07-16-2009, 01:23 PM you should do the Predator anyways ;) And then grab a CMR tune right away. Your rig will be a completely different beast! I know DCX was running a special for both-their CMR tunes were only like $90  BUT I love my MHP CMR Tune!!!
billettechnology 07-16-2009, 01:30 PM BTW You can get a 180 thermostat part number 4128 at auto zone Part number4127
for the 170..
Mike_Levy 07-16-2009, 02:43 PM Or you can get a 180 at NAPA, Part number 165.
LBCSRT8 07-16-2009, 07:39 PM You may experience a coolant spray coming out from your radiator cap. Just switch it out to a stant locking cap and you should be good. Don't know why this happens but on some rigs it does.
YoungMedic23 07-16-2009, 07:54 PM I'll stand by the 170 degree
MNBob 07-16-2009, 08:52 PM I had the Stant 180 thermostat and it gave CEL (check engine light) codes (engine not reaching operating temperature) almost all the time. Switched to the Jet 180 and have not had a code since.
promo718 07-16-2009, 09:09 PM i run the 180 and leave the fan trigger temps stock.
JJJ93z 07-16-2009, 09:18 PM I had the Stant 180 thermostat and it gave CEL (check engine light) codes (engine not reaching operating temperature) almost all the time. Switched to the Jet 180 and have not had a code since.
Do you know the JET 180 part # off hand? Did you have to trim it down to fit, or will the OEM gasket fit over it?
Crookster777 07-16-2009, 09:59 PM 10183 and it comes with a gasket and fits just like OEM. I have it on my 5.7 (its the same thermostat for the 5.7/6.1).
WBSRT 07-17-2009, 07:46 AM I had the Stant 180 thermostat and it gave CEL (check engine light) codes (engine not reaching operating temperature) almost all the time. Switched to the Jet 180 and have not had a code since.
Curious , does anyone know the Standard Op temp of the engine? I have the 180 also , no codes. I have my Fans set @ 190 stock was 213.
JJJ93z 07-17-2009, 10:45 AM 10183 and it comes with a gasket and fits just like OEM. I have it on my 5.7 (its the same thermostat for the 5.7/6.1).
Thanks bro!
Joe Las Vegas 07-18-2009, 04:38 PM HERE (http://marylandspeed.com/diablosport-predator-usb-interface-kit-170-or-180-degree-tstat-package-20062009-jeep-grand-cherokee-srt8-61l-hemi-dcxsp05-p-2139.html) they compare the 4127, 4128 and the Jet 180, I know the 4127 and 4128 are failsafe, is the Jet 180 failsafe also?
Crookster777 07-18-2009, 05:39 PM Thanks bro!
No problem.
stang99x 07-18-2009, 10:47 PM I just bought the 4128 tonight, along with the gasket and some touch up paint. It was like $23 with tax
Joe Las Vegas 07-19-2009, 08:14 AM i run the 180 and leave the fan trigger temps stock.
What's the point?
YogiSRT8 07-20-2009, 08:18 AM I saw the fan speeds in an older thread when I searched but I just want to make sure nothing has changed since then so what fan settings is everyone using? Thanks
Joe Las Vegas 07-20-2009, 01:29 PM I use 170 low and 180 high with my 4127/170 on my RT, but when hot (100+ outside) it gets so much heat soacked that it runs 212 anyway.
Now I'm thinking of going with a 180 thermostat, that way it won't open so soon and let the coolant in the radiator cool down longer before going to the engine block.
If I get a 180 (might try the Jet to see if it cools downs better) I will set the low fan speed at 175 and the high speed at 180, that way it will cool down at 180, which is when the thermostat starts opening.
Joe Las Vegas 08-30-2009, 01:49 PM I have question/concern about running a 180 thermostat: when it 90+ outside, my Hemi runs 212 no matter what the high fan speed is set too, 190 in my case, so what's the point of a thermostat if the Hemis run hot by design?
All it is doing is abusing my high speed fan by running all the time.
I'm kind of considering going back to stock and not touching the fan temps, plus when heat soaked, the 180 thermostat does nothing whatsoever when it comes to improving performance, the only thing that helps in performance is a real cold air intake sucking in outside air, which my Volant proved itself to be great at that compared to a tube and filter only making things worse.
promo718 08-30-2009, 09:03 PM What's the point?
1. running the motor 20* cooler while cruising should extend its life
2. i can turn on ac / heater and get the temps down while idling at a light before racing. i feel much better having control over this rather than changing the fan on trigger temps via handheld, which'll have the fan running @ high-speed all day, exceeding its duty cycle, where the electric fan motor's bound to burn out quickly.
