: Does your Rear whine?
whipple1 03-04-2007, 06:41 PM I read a couple of threads about rear end whine,I came up with change fluid to synthetic and ring and pinion change.I have an 07 and I get the whirring from the Rear from hard acceleration but none from a hard launch?I also get a slight whine on the parkway cruiseing at 65mph only when accelerating, when I put my foot on the gas I hear the whine when I take it off the gas the whine is gone.Any speed under 65mph no whine.I took it to the Dealer and they said everything is fine.Next time I go I will take them for a ride and show them what a rear end whine sounds like.Does anyone else have this problem or is it normal?,I was never in any other SRT8 to compare it to I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Kevin....
JDR07 03-04-2007, 07:05 PM I know exactly what you're talking about in reference to the 65-70 mph whine. It seems to have gotten a little better since I first noticed it, but it's definitely there whenever I touch the gas in that speed range. To me, that suggests it has something to do with the transfer case and all the clutches and what not, because if it was from the rear end itself i would think it would be constantly audible whenever the vehicle is moving, at any speed. I also don't think the problem I'm having is coming from the rear, it sounds more like its underneath the shifter console, so im starting to feel pretty certain its the tc. i'm still debating whether or not I should bring this up with my dealership when I get my oil changed, I really dont want to be stuck with a Jeep Compass while they dissassemble my vehicle, which they know next to nothing about.

I guess your right about the noise,If it was the rear it would make the noise all the time maybe it is the tranfer case, everytime I used the truck I turn the traction off, next time on the parkway I will leave it on and see if it makes a difference.Maybe when the dealer took it for a ride he had the traction on and thats why he didnt hear anything,I will let you know if there is a difference. Thanks Kevin....
JDR07 03-04-2007, 09:33 PM Traction control on/off DOES change the sound, that was one of the first things I noticed about it. I really don't know whether or not to make an issue out of this with my dealer, because on the one hand it doesn't seem to affect the performance at all, but it is definitely annoying enough that I would like to fix it.
OurZoo 03-04-2007, 09:46 PM Seems like everyone has the whine and everyone has an even more pronounce whine when the TC is disabled. My dealer said it was normal (this dealership isn't the one I purchased from either).
limeylee 03-05-2007, 08:49 PM How noticable is this whine?
Would I definately notice if I had it?
Is it on 06 and 07?
OurZoo 03-05-2007, 09:08 PM Mine is an 07. Turn the stereo off and listen at the ride above 40 mph.
whipple1 03-06-2007, 12:18 AM Mine is an 07. Turn the stereo off and listen at the ride above 40 mph.
Turn yor radio off and heat blower off, drive on the parkway at 55mph for a couple of min. then slowly speed up to 65mph,on mine at 55 its nice and quiet until I start to hit 60+mph thats when the whine starts ,dont get me wrong its not that loud but you will definatly hear it,I can live with it but it shouldnt be there,it doesnt affect performance at all,the noise is there with traction on or off and only above 60mph.Let me know if you hear it.Thanks Kevin...P.S. I screwed up this is for post#6 and its an 07'.
shodanusmc 03-06-2007, 06:47 AM Usually the dealer will cause 2 problems for every one they partially fix.
gculver 03-06-2007, 08:12 AM Ya, She whines when I slap it to hard. OH !!-- just realized I'm on the wrong board! Sorry!!:D
split2112 03-06-2007, 11:51 AM mine whines on normal acceleration from 0-70 mph...its annoying
JeepSRT 03-06-2007, 03:54 PM Same here, I'll just live with it I guess.
Focus4 12-22-2007, 03:38 PM I also have this noise during acceleration between 65-75 mph on my new '08. Is this normal? It only happens when i am lightly dipping into the throttle during these speeds on the highway. I had a similar noise on my old STi but it wasn't quite as loud as it is in the jeep. I am sure it is normal and has to do with the beefy gears, but I can't tell if it is coming from the engine or the tranny. It isnt affecting performance or sound that bad, but just wanted to check if it was normal. Thanks!

Yes it is normal..Some are just worse than others.
07blksrt8 01-07-2008, 08:09 AM My 07 had some developed some gear whine between 50 and 65 after about 5K miles on the odo, nothing alarming but definitely audible.
To isolate where the noise was coming from, I changed fluid in 2 phases:
I first changed the transfer case fluid with the special Chrysler fluid, no change in sound. The factory fluid came out very clean and free of shavings, etc. from the transfer case.
I then changed the front and rear diff fluids, used Mobil 1 75W-140 fluid. My truck is now MUCH quieter. The factory gear oil looked pretty well spent, interestingly more so in the front, which had some small metal shavings, than rear diff which was just plain dirty.
A diffs fluid change with quality synthetic gear lube should help quiet things down quite a bit.

Great info.
I know my spare rear diff at 6,000 miles had fairly "dirty" oil.
It sure would not hurt to change the fluids as you have done.

HoustonSRT-8 01-07-2008, 10:25 AM Mine whined before I took it into the dealer for the last bit of warranty work. I had TSB's 21-005-06 & 21-016-07 done, all driveline fluids replaced per the 30k service and it seems to have mostly gone away.

Maybe something to fresh fluid then.

My stock rear diff (which is currently installed) is perfectly quite!
No gear noise / clunk no noise period!

blackcar 01-07-2008, 02:11 PM My kids whine, when i spank them on the rear w/ a belt.
URSSOSLOW 01-10-2008, 09:22 PM yep mine too, its an 2007 jeep srt8 , it started around 4000 miles, i have 10000 now still whining. OH WELL!!
07blksrt8 01-11-2008, 07:47 AM A brief update to my prior post.
After changing my diff fluids, I topped off the transfer case fluid a couple of days later, as per instructions in the Service Manual (thanks Bill).
After subsequently driving the truck for a few days, it has become apparent that some of my noise, as well as a "clunk" from somewhere in the drivetrain at low speed throttle off/on when the drivetrain was warm are gone. I think the factory underfilled my transfer case, they put in exactly 1 quart, and while it did not damage anything, putting the correct amount of fluid in has quieted things noticably.
My drivetrain is now quieter than it has ever been; it is great to know that there was nothing wrong that a little tlc and fresh oil could not cure.

WONDERFUL!
Guys need to pay attention to your post and change the fluids.
Put the CORRECT amount of fluid in also.
Damn, I thought the transmission was the only part that was that touchy on fluid level.
Bill
jason900rr 01-17-2008, 03:31 PM i only noticed mine would wwhine when the trac. control was off. i will check fluid out and add some lucas stabilizer to it before we go to the dells to see if this changes anything.

Could you post how many quarts I will need and what type - I will change both diffs and the t/c.
Why is the trans so touchy on fluid level?
BuilderBill 01-30-2008, 02:50 AM Could you post how many quarts I will need and what type - I will change both diffs and the t/c.
Why is the trans so touchy on fluid level?
The NAG1 trans. is very touchy on fluid levels...that's why there is no dipstick!
The fluid expands TREMENDOUSLY with temp and the test dipstick is graduated by temperature / level.
It must be in gear when checking also.
The fluid will foam if overfilled (or under filled).

Bill, Bill, Bill, 4:50am and you are up helping other members;) What a guy:)
tonyk 02-01-2008, 02:34 AM Hey Whipple, I had a bad whine in my 06 model and they found a collapsed bearing within the diff. This was replaced at 15000km or 10000miles i think this is ruffly the conversion!
The sound was very annoying but i cannot complain they replaced the parts with no question asked.

Please post correct amount of oil needed to be repaced on diff & trany. Type of oil used?(brand & grade)
Thanks.
chriscorv5 01-22-2009, 11:43 PM i got the whine, i get mine at 25-30mph. Seems to kick in when im on the gas almost hard enought to throw it down a gear but just quite right not enough. The jeep goes "grrrrrrr".

Mine's just barely noticeable when cruising in the speed range mentioned above. From everything I've read and researched, it seems normal. It isn't that bad. This SRT makes up for it in so many other ways.

My take on this is that we have VERY little sound insulation in the rear area.
I have heard a slight whine in every stock Jeep GCSRT8 rear.
My 8.8 has exactly the same sound as the stocker.
Now the 9" Ford....you guys want noise:eek::eek:.
