: The Amazing Decreasing MPG!

Ok since new (bought it with 150miles from the dealership) my car has averaged 9.1mpg city and 9.2mpg highway. As this seemed significantly less than others on the board, I've tried to drive as "old man-ish" as possible. My MPG has now dropped to 8.9 city. Any ideas on what could be causing the low MPG I have experienced since buying the car???

That is low - I got 12.1 from the getgo but after a few thousand miles I now get 12.3 average.
Is it the computer telling you this?
Have you actually calculated between fill-ups for yourself?
Do you use remote start all the time?(uses a lot of Gas)
Can you smell gas? (Possible leak)

At the beginning I averaged 13. Now I am around 15.

Yes, I am reading this from the computer. Is there anyway to reset the computer and create a whole new history?

Should probably calculate myself. Do you know how much gas is left when the the low gas warning light comes on? That why I don't have to run to total empty when testing.

I have never used the remote start as it has been broken since I first got the car.

No gas smell with no sign of gas when left overnight.

Any other ideas? Could it be simply be because I am driving only very short distances in a city (thus stop lights at each block)?

According to previous threads we have established there are 2 gallons left when the light comes on and the computer reads zero

I have betwen light commute with plenty of WOT so average 12 should be what you expect.

I suspect it is the computer - maybe somebody on the forum knows how to reset this.

You don't have to run it dry. Just reset the trip meter when you fill up, and calculate the next time you fill up based on how much it takes and how many miles are on the trip meter.

It's easy to re-set the computer's mpg read out... I would recommend doing that for starters. Also, what's the air pressure in your tires?
Short runs will drastically effect the mileage, since the electronic choke is using more gas initially until the engine warms up.

I drive pretty conservative compared to some of you younger guys. Most of my driving is highway - at speeds between 60-70. I get 16.5 mpg.

Yes, you can reset the avg mpg to start fresh. Just step the trip computer to that display and press reset.

My mileage has only gotten better since the beginning. Calculate it manually as I'm sure you'll see you are getting better mph than the computer says.

I have a short commute also, roughly 6 miles to work. I average about 12 mpg, and drive it like it is meant to be driven, hard.

i drive mainly city also... so far i was getting no better than 11.7... i finally hit the 12mpg line.... but i've never had anything lower than 10.5 and i'm ON IT ALL THE TIME. so let's hope it's just your computer messing up and not the engine.

That is low, I get about 12.3 city and 17 highway.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going to take it on a really long trip this weekend and see how it responds. If not, I have to take it in to get the remote start fixed (that hasn't worked since new!) next week so I'll get them to look at it. Once again this board has been great in responding. Thank you.

I get around 180 - 200 miles between fill ups - 17G. That is with the Supercharger but it did not hurt the fuel mileage. I also have the 2wd option from GS and that really helps the Torque steer but the MPH did not really change. Around 12 on the computer with nice driving.

I am averaging 14-15 mpg with mixed city/highway driving. I wish the instrument cluster gave an "instantaneous" mpg readout. I had it on my old Dakota, and it was really helpful to see how your driving habits directly affected your mileage immediately. Maybe Jeep thinks that seeing single digit or sub zero mpg readings would give drivers a heart attack!

I also have a short (5 mile) commute. No freeway, lots of lights.
I am averaging 10.5

I drive 30 miles each way to work on some of the most congested roads in NJ. It includes city, highway and bumper-to-bumper traffic. I'm averaging between 12.9-13.2 per the computer. On a long highway trip at 70-80mph, no cruise control (hate it), I average 16 mpg.

Yesterday, son #3 and I drove the 260 miles to WVU (his new home away from home this fall) from northern MD. I pretty much cruised at around 75, with little traffic both ways.

I averaged 14.1 up, and 16.7 back. I guess that shows the difference between uphill and downhill.

My comute to work is about 7 miles each way. All city driving, and I get about 11.5.

I must have the heaviest foot here. I have 4800 miles on my truck and according to the comp, I am getting 9.3

I don't know but wouldn't climate also factor into what type of gas mileage you would be getting? As well as hills/terrain of the drive?

Maybe I am just pulling this out of my @ss. :o

No hills around the city of Chicago, unless you count getting in and out of really big pot holes  Either way I still think its worth it. Since I bought the beast last June, I have only put 200 miles on my mercedes.

Hehe.

No, the son returned from WV with me. And the 4 of them eat enough to easily make a Z06 payment.

The difference is going from the flatlands of MD, up the mountains to Morgantown WV, and the downhill run on the way back.
