Took it out on Friday to Abingdon Airfield (nr Oxford,UK) for a Track Day. I had my new B&B on with the K+N drop in and it sounded fantastic. Lots of Lotus's/ factory prepared mini's,C 7's, Scoobies,M5/3's, couple of 911's etc..

After I'd been round the track a couple of times the other driver kept coming over 'What the hell's in that !'.

It was quite a good circuit with plenty of straights (90/100mph) but also there was lots of chicanes/tight corners which the SRT handeled very well - or course the Lotus/Minis and C 7's were faster around them but as soon as I exited I left them behind (except for a few high speced Elise's) - Had the traction control on and managed to get it really confused by the end of each session (light just stayed on all the time !) - Tyres held up well and it took some of the fast corners very well.

Took it out with an race instructor during one session and he got me using the stick shift as I found I was coming up to corners in 3rd and it never changed down in auto, so coming out of corners in auto it was in 3rd. Using the stick shift I could change down into 2nd which gave me good exit acceleration, with the box then auto changing up as it hit red line. It never went beyond 3rd anyway even at 90 !

Managed to get down to 9mpg ! Used Shell V-power 99 ron. - The mini club boys had their own racing fuel (110 oct ! )

Attached are a selection of photo's. The mini boys had a video camera in the front - I will try and get some footage from them.

Great story and pictures.

What size tires are on the euro model? Does anyone know if the smaller tires have a positive or negative impact on handling?

I was going to ask the same question. They appear smaller in width, esp. the rears.

In general on a track, the wider the better. Ideally you may want to eliminate the stagger in order to minimize understeer, but not having driven mine on a track or autox it's just conjecture.

Mark, in general, how did the handling feel at speed? How did it handle high speed transitions? Any natural understeer or oversteer tendencies in the corners? Was there much repeated heavy braking that really heated those pads up? If so, any fade? I couldn't help but notice the wheels, that's either track munge from the dirt and wet, or it's pad dust. If it's pad dust, you were really working those things!

Great pics, btw.

Handling was good at speed - got those tyres really screaming ! No noticable under/over steer - I could realy throw it into some of the corners.

Yes a fair bit of heavy braking (yes it was brake dust) - after about 3 sessions there was a some brake fade. Tyres stood up well but got really hot when the track dryed out. Track was very wet first thing which accounts for some of the dirt. One driver commented that all he could see was a cloud of spray disappearing into the distance !!

As I mentioned before when I started each session the TC light flicked on and off as it should but towards the end of the session it was on permantly ! - But TC still working. It must have just given up !

I'm curious as to why you chose to leave traction control on?

Great Pictures Mark - looks like a lot of fun

Of course it was raining - nice English day - still better than snow:D

I wonder what the jeep would be like with 110 octane - has anybody tried?

I'll have to say that is a big + in owning an export model.. I think they look very mean without the antenna hole. I also took mine to the track last weekend.... I'll do a write up when I get the results. Amazingly enough, I think I did very well despite having the thinner wheels. Then again my track was dry and hot.... ;)

I hear ya.... I noticed my TC actually turned itself off when I got really aggressive. You can still feel it kick in even when the light shows off though. I think it really slowed me down but then again .. my Jeep is still in one piece. :D

Yeap... still have the Scorpion's. Very surprisingly, the tead seems ok. I should have measured them before I started. I'm sure they are quite scrubbed down. The weather was hot and I had them screaming for over 20 laps. :D
