: Anobody ever traded (or contemplated) their GC in to a dealer?

I was wondering what they are really worth as a trade in or retail sales. I've seen the Ebay crap but that is so unreliable. Just wondering how far down to grab my ankles if I ever thought about trading in.

Buhler Buhler anyone?

I would neve trade in. It's definitely easier, but you can save yourself a couple of grand by going the private party route. That couple of grand could pay for some niice mods!

So many factors come into play that you have to pick a wide range. I would say most fully loaded models in excellent condition would bring dealer offers in the $30-$36k range for '06 models and a 2-3k higher for '07s. Some markets have small amounts of new inventory while others are very dry. Mileage of course would also come into consideration as would what you are trading-in for. It's nice that production has been kept somewhat limited as otherwise resale prices would be even lower.

Sometimes you may be better off trading-in vs selling it on your own, it depends on the price difference between what you can get from a dealer and selling it at market value. The sales tax credit can offset a lot of the difference. On a 36k trade value you could save nearly $3,000 in most parts of the country. With that example you'd have to bring in $39k to "break even".

It can be a hassle selling a vehicle on your own, or it can go smooth. It's sure a lot easier though just to hand it over to the dealer, as long as you can get a decent offer you can save yourself a lot of hassle. Dealers of course know this and may use it to your advantage. Bottom line: learn the art of negotiation, and keep your vehicle in pristine condition.

Reading this thread prompted me to check out KBB to see where things sit and I noticed that the SRT8 doesn't even appear for '06 ('07 was expected) as a package or an option (or the 6.1 hemi for that matter).

Unfortunately this leaves a lot open to dealer discretion or "what they're getting at auction" BS. I would also say that it depends on the dealer and location.

I found a dealer here in CA (when i was looking) selling a used '06 with 6k on the clock for $55K! I called to see if it was a typo (or meant to print 35K cuz i would have been all over it) and they asked me what was wrong with the price!!?? I actually said "nothing except that I'm going to buy a brand new '07 tomorrow for under list".

Edmunds TMV for a black '06 (with everything except DVD) with 20K in clean condition would get you about 34K on trade-in. FWIW.

Most dealers go by Galves, some NADA.

And to my surprise, some also use KBB.

Most people get their feelings hurt by dealer trades, because they get a quote online from KBB and historically Galves is lower.

So people go "Hey KBB said my car is worth X amount." The dealer then sais "Go have KBB buy your car."

I know of someone that got $38k on trade for an 07, slightly over 2k miles.

As RS said, if you're buying a new car.....you also have to take into consideration the tax savings.

If you're leasing a new car, don't trade your vehicle in as you won't get tax savings.

My Manheim auto auction dealer database shows 06's averaging 36,300 with 6300 miles and below average at 33 with 10k miles. The most recent one we got in on trade was a 2006 with 8k miles we gave 33,500 for.

I think what RS and Beltfed were referring to is the tax savings on the purchase of another car...if you buy a $40,000 vehicle straight off of a lot, you pay taxes on the full $40,000 (where I live in PA, the tax is 6%, which means I would owe $2,400 in taxes). But if I buy a $40,000 vehicle and trade a vehicle in that is worth $30,000, then I only pay taxes on the $10,000 difference, for a total of $600 in taxes. I just saved myself $1,800 in taxes...so if I sold my $30,000 trade-in privately, I would need to make sure I sold it for at least $31,800 to break even.

With respect to the trade in value that started this discussion...I believe it also has a lot to do with the manufacturer of the vehicle you are trading in your SRT on. By that, I mean, if you are trading a GC SRT in on another Jeep or another Chrysler product, you are probably better off than if you are trading a Jeep in on a Chevy. When I bought my SRT8, I traded in a GMC Yukon...the Jeep dealer didn't want to give me squat for the trade in, because he didn't deal in GMC.

When I sold my SRT8 last month, I bought another Yukon. I had originally contacted the GMC dealer to question the value of my trade and I was told that they didn't want it on their lot and they would need to call around to see who wanted it and what they were willing to pay for it...my father-in-law works for the dealer, so I wasn't just getting jerked around.

(As a side note, the GMC dealer told me that all of the Jeep dealers that they called here in Western Pennsylvania basically told them that the fad was past, the rush was over, and they didn't want an SRT8 sitting on their lot, because they weren't moving). The only price the GMC dealer even got was from an auction, which was for $33,000...that was for my fully loaded '06 with only 1,800 miles on the ODO!!!

I ended up selling the SRT8 to a member of this site for $37,000. My advice...don't trade...sell privately.

(Second side note, then I'm done...was told by my father-in-law that a regular customer of his sent him a referral two weeks later...'06 GC SRT8 with only 800 miles on the ODO, wanted to trade in on a Yukon).

Never trade in, when I was getting ready to get my SRT8 the dealer wanted to give me $17,000 for my '03 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 Hemi, Nav system, and loaded with 30,000 miles, pic below. Anyway, put it on Ebay and got $27,500 from a guy in Washington.

I've had it for a year and been thru it and back. I've done GSM heads/intake kit with the comp cam ,kooks, etc etc etc. Its a fun truck but I might be ready to put it back stock and move on.

Just thinkin maybe something better for pulling a small boat or my enclosed trailer. This will haul one bike fine but three bikes in an enclosed is right at the tow limit for the truck. I did a trip to NC and back last summer with about 3000 lbs on it and it seemed to be a little hot in the cargo area of the truck (and only got 10mpg using the draft behing 18 wheelers).

Just seems like I don't get to use it for its purpose so I'm thinkin of a Tahoe or Yukon. I could get out with a small payment on the trade.

Yea, understand, I've got an F.R.I cam in mine as well with custom intake. Yukon/Tahoes(new body style) looks pretty good and can be made to look badass with a few tricks. I guess thats why I have an 06 Trailblazer SS, with a maxed-out tune and 95 % of the torque management removed, It's a screamer and can tow 5,000#. I do drive both, but the JEEP is mainly a play toy.
