So I was talking to my gf's father and we were talking about the hemi. He knows tons about cars and used to work on funny cars. He asked me if i knew if the engine was put together in canada or mexico, he said mexico built crappy engines and all the good ones came out of canada. Well today when i was getting my oil change i looked at the invoice of a new srt8 and well what do you know....

1. Body built in Detroit
2.Trans built in German
3. Engine built in mexico...

I dunno but after realizing that i was a little on the 'eh' side paying 45k on a performance vehicle where the engine was made in mexico. And it did make me really wonder about the quality of the work put into putting the 6.1L togethor.

Is most problems reported here from the body or trans or engine?

There are reported problems w/ everything of course on occasion, except for the transmission. Obviously I think we wont see the possible engine issues untill more owners hit higher mileages or we start doing more mods. So far from what I heard is that gsm superchargers blows the motors left and right ( probally from lack of tune mostly ) but i've been hearing cases of stock motors popping also. I hope that DC didnt take the cheap way out on the motor.

The US is now a world of onshoring and offshoring most things.

Seems to be that way, researching deeper obviously DC isnt the only one to outsource from mexico - so does ford and also nissan. Yea i'll probally get flamed for the creation of this thread but how can one say that outsourcing to a country such as mexico wont have an effect. Ghosin from nissan is huge on costcutting but isnt nissan also having more problems with their vehicles than they used to in the 90's. Outsourcing an american vehicle is b.s. to me though - all this talk of buy american buy american and than even companies like ford save money but also hurt the economy here...well i'm done with my rant

Fords 5.0L Mexico blocks are the best factory units available. Older Bowtie Mexico blocks suck. Go figure.

All Hemi's are made in Mexico, as were all 5.9L Engines before them for many years. The 2.4L used in all PT's and 2.4L Turbo used in the SRT4 were also made in Chrysler's Mexico Plant.

All of these engines have a good quality reputation.

I didnt realize production went so far back to these factories - I wonder how much cheaper an engine is to produce in mexico compared to the us and if the customer actually gets a portion of that money saved through a lower msrp

Its all about quality control, technician training, quality processes and quality parts.

Good engines can be built anywere, vice is also correct.

Back in college, I had a "Mexican" built VW Jetta. It served me well for 4 years straight and did not have a single mechanical failure. I'm talking NOTHING wrong, it never went to service for any other reason than to change the oil.

Razor if you are so concerned about the freakin engine, then why didn't you do research before you bought your SRT8. People don't care that it's built in Mexico. That's just how things go these days. What you should be more concerned about is taking care of your vehicle properly and heavily modifying it. Some people just have to much time on their hands I guess. :D

Tonnes of great VW's have come out of plants in Mexico. These guys likely have more experience building cars and engines than any of us even know. Including us lonely Canadians.

Now I am going to drive my truck to Taco Bell for something to eat.

I'm sure if you were to check these mexican factories you will find that they are run by american management, engineering, quality control. They are probably owned by US mfg.I'm in the screw machine business and I know of some USA shops that have shops in mexico that put out the same quality as there american shops.(for less money)What are you going to do!!

Very little is made in America anymore. Why, because it is expensive. You can get good A/V electronics but you are going to pay for it. Beyond that, forget it.

Automakers can't make ANY money building cars in America. You are also going to see the same thing happen with European makers. They won't be built in Europe. Hell, they will be built here if the Euro keeps moving up.

You're mistaken about the transmission. It is an MB copy but is built in the US.

If that is the case, why then on the Maroney sticker does it say under "Parts Content Information....

Final assembly point...........Detroit

Country of Origin....
Engine: Mexico
Transmission: Germany

Just curious. Any explanation?

I do not see why u have a problem with the engine being made in mexico. Chrysler has standards the mexicans are not making these engine's in there house Its at a multi million dollar facility with all the proper equipment and they all have recieved adequate training so there should be no problems with the engine ( I got my wisdom teeth pulled today and have been taking alot of T3'S so if im being rude or blowing this out of porportion please give me a chin check )
