: Dog crate for Grand Cherokee?

So when I sold my Denali to purchase the Cherokee, I didnt realize how much of a problem dog transportation would become.

I periodically need to carry a 95lb Lab, a 50lb Weimeraner, and a *ahem* 8lb Chihuahua on a 500 mile road trip. In the Denali, to preserve the condition of the interior of the vehicle, I put a large metal dog crate in the wayback for the big dogs, and a small, portable carrier for the Chihuahua on the back seat.

None of my crates fit in the Cherokee, no suprise there, but I cant seem to find any crates made to fit in the unique shape of the Cherokee wayback. With the way the rear seat leans back, and the glass leans forward, how do the rest of you solve this problem?

It sounds like you want full protection, but a good quality steel pet barrier can be bought through Weathertech. We use these for our fleet vehicles as luggage dividers, but they don't require drilling and if are put against a rear seat, they can't move.

My Weimeraner has a nasty habit of nervous chewing. If left to her own devices in the back of the Jeep, I am sure she would make quick work of the various plastic bits back there. I think for my particular situation, I need to find some sort of crate.

Thanks for the link, though!

I use a soft sided crate that fits in the back of the truck, though my Cane Corso / Weimeraner mix managed to bust through the mesh sides (since replaced with sewed on pillow cases!), so it may not suit your needs, and definitely won't fit both dogs. I got the medium crate listed in the Jeep accessories catalog (don't believe the rep who will tell you that it doesn't fit in the back of the Jeep), the one in the catalog is expensive, and there is a generic version without the jeep logo, I'll try to find the website I ordered it from when I get home later. . .

Thanks! I would love to see pics as well!

I had to take the dogs to the border this past weekend, I used a soft-sided crate. It was the 2nd largest model (not sure if L or M) and both of them fit ok. The big dogs share a jumbo crate all day at home, to keep the chewer out of medicine cabinets and to maintain the legs on the kitchen chairs.. so they are used to sharing space, and get along just fine.

The only problem with the soft-sided crate is that the zipper is on the ends. I wonder if I can get somebody local to sew on an additional entry zipper on the side of the thing?

I would sew the door on myself, but I would have to hand sew as my house does not own a sewing machine.

One of these days I'll devirginize the rear of the GC with all 3 of my Labs hanging out the rear. Will make for a great picture if nothing else. Definitely not as much room as my Envoy.

the crate I have has a front/side zipper so it is much easier, Sargeant just jumps right into it! I'll try to post pics or a link to it ASAP!!!!!

So no pics yet (hopefully later today if the weather holds up), but I listed a few sites below that carry the dog crate (Jeep doesn't list it on their gear site anymore). There are some things about the crate that aren't perfect though, it basically obliterates rear window visibility (you can see through a small area in the mesh if your dog isn't blocking it), and the crate has been pressing on and doing some mild damage to the coil wire connection in the upper left of the tailgate glass (I assume this is for the rear defroster, which still works just fine). Other than that, it's perfect for protecting the truck and keeping a crazy dog slightly in line! Good luck, hopefully I'll have some pics later, and remember that the medium is the biggest size the jeep will accomadate. Here are the sites, I think petco is the cheapest, and I am sure there are other sites out there, this is just a start:

any upholstery shop can easily replace zippers. I had the vinyl side windows redone on my wrangler with oversize YKK zippers for $80 both sides, just to give you an idea.

I used to have a hammock-style rear seat dog liner but it was a PITA to have to unclip it every time I had a rear seat passenger, so I replaced it with custom made seat covers in matching gray. For your big dogs in the back I would use a cargo hammock liner with a divider rack, unless they prefer to be in a crate.

I like the ones you found...
This one:

is curved at the top. It does block the entire rear window, but as I said before, I need to put a side zipper in.

The one good thing about this one, since its curved, I do not think it will have any problems against the rear window heating grid. I will put it in the wayback and take some pictures tonight.

this might sound like a crazy idea but you could have an upholstery shop change the fabric "dome" into clear vinyl so you could see a little bit through it.

Not crazy at all. I wonder how well it would stand up to the wet-nose prints?

I guess I'll just have to do a serious interior detail after I have the kids in the GC.

You could, but the lawsuits would be awful.

Cool thread, I have a 4 mo old black lab, she is a little too comfortable sitting in the front seat on mommy's lap so i'll have to look into one of those things soon! :)

this is what I call the "SRT stance" - when driving over a rough road and the car is swaying side to side because the suspension is so stiff.

The seatcovers are made by Covercraft, they're nice because you can still split-fold the seats and use the seatbelts, and they're fairly easy to take off and clean.

We started with the chocolate male and decided to get him his first yellow girlfriend and then decided he should have two *****es :D and got him a black one. Thanks for the offer on the vet advice. With our zoo (get it) we know our vet very, very well. We have each others cellphones, lol.
I like those seat covers Ideal.

Awesome. . . my dog's SRT stance is being whipped into a sitting position at WOT from a stoplight :)
