: Brake "squeal" on cold start - not the normal pad squeak

Hi All,

After flogging a Black 2006 JGC SRT-8 press vehicle we had in a few months back, I decided that I must have one of these bad boys for myself. So I bought an 07 Red Rock and am absolutely loving it. Great power and sound, fit and finish seems really good...I personally love the Red Rock color.

Couple issues are surfacing that are normal from what I've gathered reading the SRT-8 boards, specifically the brake pad squeak. However mine has another (additional) noise that can only be heard on a cold start. (I should say cold brake start since the engine/drivetrain can be warm and still exhibit the noise.) It can best be heard when I'm idling down my driveway and hear almost a rubbing noise, for sure on the left front wheel, and maybe on the right front. It's a squealing noise that sounds similar to the noise when you let the air out of a balloon while pinching the rubber, only not as loud. It increases the faster the wheel turns and gets louder when I apply the brakes. It will make noise while the vehicle is turning or going straight.

After about 5 minutes of driving, presumably after things have heated up, the noise goes away and the only remaining one is the normal brake pad squeak on light deceleration.

So does anyone else have this problem? It seems like a caliper is maybe out of alignment? But then how would that explain the noise going away when things get hot? I tried the water/hose trick to clean any dust off, as well as compressed air, but the squeal remains.

Any help would be appreciated!

I've never had that problem you're describing reversing. I'd say it's either a caliper or maybe a pad retaining clip? You might want to pop that front left wheel off and take a look.

I have a horrendous sqeal going down an incline when the brakes are dirty or damp. Noise would wake the dead. Only had it a couple of times.

The squeeling you hear while cold is your rotors being scored by the OEM pads when cold, change the pads or you will be *****ing to DCX next month about new rotors.

Inferno, do you know why this is, and why the noise stops when things heat up?

I thought these were supposed to self adjust?

Have you pulled the wheel and checked for anything that's really close to the rotor, like a misrouted brake line or a bent dust shield? Does the sound change at all when you press the brakes really hard vs just pressing them lightly? Have you ever bedded your brakes? See: zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

Why because the OEM pads are not matching up with the rotors well at all, the physics reason who knows, but EVERY SRT8 Jeep has this issue, warranty now or pay later either way ide change the pads ASAP!

Dave, great to have you here. I know you from way back on bimmerfest. In fact, you personally did my cdv removal on my e46 m3 a few years ago...

I had the exact same "scary" sound when I backed up and turned out of a parking spot at work last week. I replaced my stock pads with the semi metallic ones from zeckhausen.com. I changed them before the snow fall and freezing temps. The first time I heard this crazy squeal was a couple of weeks ago when the temp was 5 below. During warmer days, I never heard any squeal. Is this normal for high performance brakes?

Ok it seems that at least some others are experiencing the noise too. Thanks for the replies. Thanks, Dave. I know you from the E39 M5 board, where I just said goodbye to my 2002 M5.

The pad "squeal" is NOT the "light deceleration high-pitch squeak" heard almost all the time. This is something different - just to make sure I'm targeting the right audience.

I hear it in the morning when going down my driveway (backwards, forwards, or steering left or right) - or any other time the truck sits for awhile. It's definitely not any type of ABS self test. Something is definitely rubbing and creating a squeal. Pressing the pedal increases the noise. Braking performance in terms of stopping is really good.

After a few minutes of driving - the noise is completely gone. This is strange to me since presumably metal components expend when they get hot, so wouldn't it rub more the hotter things get?

I'll take the wheels off later in the week, but I'm just trying to gather info before I do that. I'll look at the dust shields and caliper alignment.

Is the braking setup on these trucks such that the pads are constantly touching the rotors?

Thanks,

Matt
