: So...someone just hit my jeep.

It's not a huge deal, they only took out the driver side mirror (which folded back as designed so the damage only appears to be the glass), but they didn't leave a note or anything. It was only parked for 20 minutes.

For those who didn't read my earliest post, I bought the Jeep because my last car got hit 3 times in the past month and I figured that a higher profile car with greater visibility would at least partially make up for complete and total driver incompetance not to mention insufficient class enough to leave an F'ing note!

If you care about your car do not move to San Francisco. Drivers here are just S**T!

Damn hippies! Considering your geographic location, a stun-gun and locking gas cap are mandatory ;)

I'm thinking that with a baseball bat and a little patience and I'll catch one of these people doing it. You see it all the time, people backing straight into someone elses car because they're not willing to be careful or they need to parking spot so bad that they just don't care if they're doing damage or not.

In any event, I'll get it fixed as new, but it's just a shame that people have so little respect around here.

Sorry to hear about that. Sounds like if you park at the far end of an empty lot that someone will go out of their way to park beside you just to do damage to your ride. Might have to consider moving...:(

Dude, I feel your pain. Having lived in San Fran I can tell you though, it is NOTHING compared to where I am in Spain. I kid you not, about 90% of cars here have at least 2 corners scraped. The other day I am sitting at Starbucks and a guy in one of those micro-vans decides he wants the spot out in front, which is probably 6 inches too small for him, he backs into the car behind him (a nice Audi TT) and gives it gas and pushes the car back so he can park. He gets out and doesn't even take a second look at the car he just indented the bumper on, and walks away.
This type of crap is a common occurence here, makes me not even want to drive.

Unreal! Start parking FAR away from anything else if you can.

And those stories are exactly why I park nowhere hear anyone in parking lots. My wife *****es b/c I park 8 spots from the last car and then can't understand why I get irate when she squeezes the Navigator in between 2 beaters just to get 3 spots closer to the front of the lot.

Just last night, I saw a beater pull the "park by feel" routine here in DC. Backed right into a new Acura, felt the "bump", then pulled forward to kiss a new-ish Yukon, then repeat till out of the space.

Funny thing, there appeared to be more than enough room to get out without the kiss-kiss-tap-tap procedure. Just looked lazy to me.

Sorry to hear that SE7. Its a sign of the times - people don't care about your car. I would always leave a note if I did something like that!
A couple of years ago I parked my Porsche outside my office. I watched a car with 4 seniors park next to me and open their door hard on my car. I ran out and gave them an earful. They denied it even though I just watched them do it - the seniors got real agressive with me to the point that everyone in the parking lot thought I was "The Jerk"
Every dent on the Porsche always seem to cost $2000 so now I don't park close to anything if possible and I'm afraid of seniors:eek:

Same thing happened to me, had my car parked on a side street for about an hour and didnt even notice til the next morning in the light that someone had hip checked my passenger rear quarter panel. Chipped the paint and was right on the fender line so now its in the shop getting fixed. Only $360.00 later. If i find out who did it i might accidentally let my Wrangler roll into his car.

SE7, was it another car that clipped you, or was it someone just smashing mirrors?

People have joked about my parking habits. I will park in the furthest reaches of my office parking lot, always in two spaces. I avoid going to the mall, as the visions of 6-yr olds and swinging doors cause my blood pressure to rise. Parallel parking on the street is enough to send me reaching for Zantac and Rolaids......

I do not think my behaviour unreasonable....

What do you folks think?

That is about one stretch further extreme then me, but not far off.

I always feel bad after yelling at my buddies for slamming my passenger door shut, but its just instinct. I mean why the need to slam?

Hi all,

Thanks for all of the sympathetic replies. Eventually I will move although I ultimately feel that it is less a SF problem than a human nature problem (made worse in SF). I was parallel parked (less than 20 minutes) on a fairly busy street. I am assuming that someone was just driving too close.

So, there is an upside to all of this. Due to the well designed mirrors on the GC, not only did the mirror fold forward as designed, the glass and plastic surround came off cleanly, no broken plastic internals, not even a stripped or ripped wire. I stopped by Jeep this morning and ordered the replacement part for $43.00 and they took the time to look over the damage saying "that should snap right back on". Woohoo! I should have the new mirror 1st thing tomorrow morning and back on track.

I'm not quite sure which numbers are relevant so I'll throw them all in.
