: Got A Flat!!
z28plus 05-10-2006, 07:25 PM Got a flat on saturday night, and was on a road trip. Drove on the run flat for 50 miles at 45mph. It did fine, but I don't like the idea of having no spare. The tire is going to have to be replaced. Anyone else have this problem. that's one thing if you are in town, but I was in the middle of nowhere.
waydennis 05-10-2006, 08:29 PM I am curious as to how much it was to replace the rubber.
Also, how did the truck drive with the flat?
Which tire was it?
Was the first indication the flat warning light?
Inquiring minds want to know!!!
Thanks!

z28plus 05-11-2006, 11:52 AM The truck drove fine with the flat, just couldn't go over 50MPH. It was the driver side rear tire. The tire pressure guage light went off and I watched the pressure go down to 0, then I pulled over and figured out what to do. The tire costs almost 400.00, and it has to be ordered because no one carries it. I bought a tire warrenty from the dealer when I bought the srt new for 495.00. It's good for 3 years. So It won't cost me anything no matter how many times I need a new tire. Plus if I hit a curb and jack up a wheel it pays for me to get a new wheel free. It was a no brainer on this truck.
jms935 05-11-2006, 12:04 PM The tire warranty is separate of the vehicle warranty? Can this be bought after the initial purchase? Did you have to buy an extended warranty to buy the tire warranty as well?
lincoln 05-11-2006, 12:55 PM I can't say what the dealer offers for tire "insurance" but many of the tire chains like Discount will sell you the certs after that fact. Many times when I buy a set of tires I decline the coverage and buy it when I need to use it. It's not supposed to work that way but many of these stores will do it.

idealrides 05-11-2006, 04:04 PM so did the computer stop you from driving over 50 or was it your choice to follow the instructions?

z28plus 05-12-2006, 02:05 PM The tire warranty is seperate from the regular warranty, and I didn't have to buy an extended warranty to get it. Just call you dealer, and make sure that the one you buy doesn't exclude run flats.

z28plus 05-12-2006, 02:06 PM No, it was my choice, and your not supposed to drive more then 50 miles at 50MPH with a flat run flat tire.

SRTJeep 10-10-2006, 11:53 AM I picked up a nail with just 30 miles, a slow leaker but these tires can't be repaired. My "Discount Tire" called Goodyear and they gave full warranty, replaced the tire free and now it has a DT road hazard warranty! I bought the first JGC SRT8 sold in MN and only two tires were available in the whole US! Great Service from DT! Gene
jms935 10-10-2006, 12:00 PM I have had a a piece of steel in my tire since the first 50 miles or so on the vehicle. I now have 1400, it seems to be as air tight as if it were repaired, so I will just let it go until it needs to be addressed.
lincoln 10-10-2006, 12:34 PM These tires can be repaired!!! Mine was repaired under the road hazard that Goodyear gives for the first 12 months or 2/32 of wear. It is Goodyear's option to repair or replace under this limited raod hazard warranty...mine was repairable (nail in center of tread). This was taken care of by my dealer during a routine service visit (he carried the wheel/tire to the authorized Goodyear EMT dealer for repair).

Ditto that. I had a huge nail in mine, and my buddy patched/plugged the tire easily, and there haven't been any leaks, knock on wood. :D I do like the TPMS. It comes in handy. JMHO.
drive like you stole it 10-10-2006, 04:46 PM I don't know but does anyone else think that while beating on it a repaired tire might be more prone to a blow out?

Why would you beat on your poor tire? :)
I've never heard of any significant problems w/a patched tire.

I still don't think it is that good of a deal (except for the dealer). You paid out $500 up front and so far no gain as the Goodyear warranty would have covered the existing flat. You are still out $500. And for that price you can buy two brand new tires. I just bought a pair of brand new tires and wheels for $500 each that I am storing away for emergencies.

I've never seen any proof that would lead me to believe that. I also don't think a blowout on an EMT would be that bad compared to a non-EMT.
MegaSRT-8 10-11-2006, 11:29 AM I tore my front tire up completely backing out of my parents house when I hit the edge of the staircase. Blew the whole side wall out. It was a freak thing, but I had to leave it there till the new tire came in. Sucked balls driving around my Dad's '92 Chevy S10 (he uses lug stuff around in) for 4 days!
He couldn't believe the truck came with no spare. I now have a donut in the back well for just such an emergancy.
scbombsquad 10-11-2006, 11:49 AM Did you check to see if your donut will clear the brakes? If so, where did you get it?

More and more vehicles come with no spare these days...many don't even have run flats (BMW M3, M5 for example)...just an electric pump and can of fix-a-flat in the trunk. I had aftermarket wheels on my M3 and kept the stock wheels...whenever I was venturing far from home I'd throw a front in trunk with a jack, lug wrench (also not included with cars that don't have spares) and 5 OE lugs...never needed it but it was nice insurance.
My SL has a spare but I got caught on the road once without the lugs for OE wheel in trunk and couldn't mount the spare since the aftermarket wheels have a much shorter lug (thankfully the cell phone saved me here...called the concierge at my apartment and had him retrieve 5 lugs from a box in my garage and bring them too me a few miles away).
z28plus 10-11-2006, 12:01 PM Yeah does it fit? Where did you get it? We want to know!!

Not to forget taht this 'donut' has to be probably 18 inches to fit over the brake system, the OD has to be the same as the stockers too, otherwise, you'd be a LOT better off leaving the rig on the side of the road and waiting for a flatbed.
