: Going to go with Vortech S/C Anyone Talk me out of it?
jhriss 04-30-2009, 02:05 AM Hey guys,
As an alternative to heads and cams, I have decided since I have done every single other mod I have read here on this forum, and my Jeep only has 700 miles on it and I don't feel like having the dealership tear into the engine and replace valve springs, etc. etc. and do the heads and all that, I am going to go with the tried and true Vortech V3 Kit for the GC SRT8 and have it installed at the dealership where all my other mods have been put on.
How many hours does the install call for? Looks like $7K with shipping to me with the polished trim. So I am trying to figure out how much it is going to cost for install. My Vortech kit for my BMW 330Xi was custom, so that was 28 hours of labor just up front so like $3K, so am I looking at 5 fig$$$ here or is it an easy 10 hour job.
If I have here tuned now for p/p i/m, ss headers w/ss cats, magnaflow, cai, tcm, TC and all that stuff and more is it going to be a bad idea to have it tuned with the predator loaded tune that comes with the Vortech kit or should I take that file, send it to my tuner at MHP and have them tweak for optimal performance?
Thanks ya'll!
Oh oh oh, and should I do the 90MM TB with this? or no? Kit comes with 2 Bar Map sensor, so uh? What do I do for the TB? leave it alone?
:D :D :D :D :D
hemi.jon 04-30-2009, 03:34 AM i would see if u can find a republe speed shop or something to do it. the dealer will cost you alot more then anyone else. and most of the guys there dont do super charger installs to really know the steps rather then just follow the instructions.
bcm0018 04-30-2009, 05:22 AM I would do the heads and cams first that way you dont have to uninstall the supercharger to do them later :D
Blown-WK 04-30-2009, 07:56 AM I wouldn't run the canned Vortech tune on your jeep with ported manifold and headers since you are moving a considerable amount more air through the engine than their tune is made for. It will most likely run lean on that canned tune. If you had a wideband you could watch the AF and add some fuel and probably get it where it needs to be.
YoungMedic23 04-30-2009, 08:07 AM 90mm will do you no good as air will be pushed into the engine as opposed to sucked like before......
jhriss 04-30-2009, 01:12 PM Hey hey, all very good points. I have a great place here called the Carb Connection, they have a sweet DynoJet All Wheel Dyno, they tune really well in house, and installing a supercharger is second nature to them, especially a well know company like Vortech. I'll give them a ring and see what they say and post back some info. So yeah, no TB needed, got that, and Mr. bcm, you want me to do heads, and cams, and then S/C, that ish would be off the richter, I would kill anything on the road in a sprint to 60 or 80, it's tempting, but dropping $47K in cash on the ride in the first place, then $13K for all the rest of the mods and install, then $9K or so on an s/c with install, and then heads and cams for around $6K is getting into the $75K zone and that is a grip of money to spend on a Jeep. Think I'll put it toward a Viper!!! or an Audi R8 when the V10 Version drops in price a bit.
rwboring 04-30-2009, 01:25 PM just get a techo and be done...
jhriss 04-30-2009, 01:33 PM Nah man, got a Vortech blower in both my BMW's, and they have never let me down, gotta keep it real! Thanks though, but I think I'll be stoked with this set up.
TR930 04-30-2009, 03:21 PM I got quoted $~5,700 for the complete Vortec kit and $1,100 for install here in Denver. Certified Vortec installer too so the warranty (on the kit) is intact.
jhriss 04-30-2009, 03:32 PM Ok, good stuff. I got this handled as far as install now at my shop here and they can tune in house on their Dyno, so we all good. As for where to buy for $5500 polished or so, someone pm me the info.
Here is the other question I have. On the driveline, I have only upgraded the TC to a Edge 3000 rpm true stall. What else is a weak link in our AWD 70 rear/ 30 front Tranny's?
I want to upgrade every single other thing that needs to be handled prior to throwing this blower in there. I did not do that with my first BMW forced induction install and it was upgrade one after another, as I did it in college 4 years back and did not have the same funds as I do now, and just wanted to get blown. It was a year of issues, trouble shooting, and headaches repairing and upgrading other things. In hind site, charging is the last thing I should have done after the other mods were completed and the car was prepared for the blower. Now I want to do it right, and supercharging is the last step of the process. I really don't want to do heads and cams though, so that is a no go.
So what else to upgrade prior to forced induction?
Thanks,
Jason

Yeah I know but you could always do H/C now adn supercharger down the road. Thats what I'm doing with my mustang. Have H/C/I. Supercharger later. In all honesty though you could put the supercharger and be done with it most likely. There is always someone faster.
I am a big fan of H/C package when it comes vs. other mods in the same price range. As for Vortech, they are leaders in this type of Superchargers. I was thier at the their facilities in CA, and its way beyond what we expect. next to the design room a couple of multi million $ machine just waiting to make things out of No where.
I am sure you will be happy with it. for the install its straigh forward thing, any reputable speed shop will be able to install. i would re-visit the tune thing to ensure proper delivery of fual & timing.
I am working on one and i would like to compare mine with yours, although that you might have a bit more stuff on your ride, at least to get a feeling of how it feels on the dyno at your site and mine 10,000 miles away;)
keep us update
jhriss 05-03-2009, 02:59 PM Yo, anyone? I am going to do all of this, what else on the drive line should be upgraded other than the TC I already did? Axles, differentials, transfer case, gear box ????? etc? what? Anyone have knowledge or experience here?

Nothing else..............
Tranny might start slipping at about 20k is you beat the hell out of it like i do in autostick 24/7.....
Axles....nope
Diffs....nope
Transfer case....nope
Gear box....nope
BUT make sure the fluids are changed as recommended in the vehicles manual or a couple thousand miles early for longevity
jhriss 05-03-2009, 08:17 PM So basically you are saying that when I beat it up, I will just have to replace with stock OEM stuff?? Really? No upgrades. Hmmmm, I guess these are relatively rare and new on the market place still for aftermarket racing tranny parts. For my M I beefed it up with stage 3 clutch and new rear end diff. I guess the diff's and the transfer case being a truck that can tow and AWD are plenty beefy. So I guess I may be ok. I did everything possibly that you can imagine to my 330Xi including Nitro on a 5 speed step auto tranny, and no issues, I just upgraded the TC now and that is it. We'll see what happens I guess.
maansy 05-03-2009, 08:55 PM you mite need to re-tune the TCM again i think

After seeing how wicked Paulie's runs, I would go Vortech, but I would definetly port the intake manifold and explore headers or port match the stock headers to increase exhaust flow. Exhaust flow is key on forced induction and opening up the stock manifold would definetly be money well spent......."if it was me".

jhriss 05-03-2009, 09:43 PM Hey hey, I've already done all of this stuff, so no worries, we all good.

pretty much... ya probably would never guess but the drivetrains in these rigs are rock solid and can handle a ton of more hp.... basically same setup as the amg's that benz produces... hard to believe b/c our drivetrains make so many strange noises :)

who's the certified vortech installer in Denver? I also live in Denver and I haven't done any tuning.
