: Potential rear window tint/glass damage

Anyone else notice? When initially using the windshield washer function to wash rear window, the rear wiper does a full cycle (back & forth) before the washer fluid begins to spray. The dry wiper going over the dirty surface can potentially damage the rear tint, as well as scratch the glass. I imagine the delay happens because of the long travel distance from the washer fluid reservoir to the rear window. Anyone else notice? I've been getting around this by carrying a water bottle and wetting the window first..hardly a permanent solution. An easy fix would be to put a 2s delay on the wiper when using the washer function: this would give the fluid time to come down.

How would the tint be damaged?

I understand what your saying, however I don't see it being that big of a deal. I'm not sure if it will permenantly damage the glass at all. I've see older SUV's all over the place without windows that are scared.

We have a fair bit of wet weather here in Seattle, and I use my spray on the rear window all the time. So far-- no problems.

Up here in northern Quebec we have a lot of sand and calcium on the roads and it seems to accumulate very quickly on the top part of the wiper blade. I'm also concerened about scratching my rear window. On the other hand, I bought this jeep to be our daily driver, it just sucks to have a brand new vehicle thats already starting to show some wear on the glass. I've been restraing myself from using it for now yet I can't believe how quickly the entire back of our jeeps accumulates so much dirt so quickly!

I'm also in the rock salt/sand belt during the winter and I've never had my windows noticeably scratched from using the rear wiper (on the Jeep or any other vehicle).

Would the delay between the fluid release & wiper action start be something the dealer could configure in the computer?

Doubt it, but I'm just guessing.

My 07 Volkswagen GTI sprays for a full second before activating the rear window wiper. Then, after it completes a wiping cycle of about 4 back and forth wipes, it will delay for about 5 seconds and wipe one more time. At first, I was so confused as to why it was activating even while the stalk is turned OFF. Then I realized that 5 second delay wipe was to remove any fluid that trickled down the window after spraying!! VERY nice. I love VW. =)

Shame our $45,000 trucks don't have the same attention to detail that my $26,000 car does.

Oh believe me, I am in no way dissing our trucks. I'm just saying, I WISH the put as much thought into the details as VW has with their cars. Seems rediculous, you know? But I love each car for what it's worth! Which is why I bought them! :D :D

One blip of the throttle and I forget everything in the Jeep. :p

I know. I was being sarcstic. I loved my S4, but now I love my Jeep. Different, but enjoy driving it just as much. And I was thrilled to see some Mercedes influences like the rain sense wipers, auto high/low beams and other programable computer features like turning off auto lock and having the doors automatically all unlock on exit. Good stuff.

I would buy another Audi anytime though. Maybe an RS4....

Exactly how I feel about trading in the M3.

I doubt that my next impractical performance car is going to be the new M3. I can't stop lusting after the Z06.

If jeep decides to do something about how the washer system works I would love to have them a) add a sprayer to the front headlights and b) protect the rear camera (one commute and it's useless). The back window is annoying but at least it is manageable ( I also can't see how the tint would be impacted).

It is weird how fast the entire back of the truck get's dirty ... I'm sure some spoiler design would negate the impact but it would need to be HUGE to overcome the draw created by the roofline as compared to the frame line.

I made that comment right away on the entire back of the truck. When the guys/gals on here give me some good waterless car wash, I will start cleaning it off in my underground parking garage. Pains me to look at a white hatch and rear window on my black truck.

I had one, and quite honestly it was annoying. It automatically activated every 3rd or 4th time you activated the windshield washers. When it sprayed the headlights, the overspray also covered the hood. Which really pissed me off when the car was pretty much clean to begin with.

Instead, I'd rather just take care of the headlights the old fashioned way.

Agreed, if it was a function related to some other system that would suck, but I would love to have a separate control for the headlights ... many nights on dark country roads I could really, really use with less crap on the headlights.

tint is on the inside of glass (i think even built into the factory rear windows) first of all so it wont affect the tint and second of all the dirt wont scratch The glass just maybe prematurely wear out the wiper blade but i doubt it. i wouldn't worry about carrying a water bottle with you. that is definitely over kill.

That and what are you gonna do if you're going 80mph on the freeway with that spray bottle?

Way to much sun down here in Sydney Australia to care about my rear window washer. To that fact has anyone considered shaving rear wiper completely. think about how clean and straight the rear would look then.
The tint is imbedded inside glass itself.

Mine gets too much use to consider losing it.

Sounds great for you, but from your post you must not have any idea how dirty that rear hatch and glass gets. Maybe I should move down under...

I agree with you 100%. Don't get me wrong, I looove my new SRT-8 but I've owned 3 vw/audi products (94 vr6 corrado, 02 audi S4 and an 04 vw 1.8T jetta all with various mods) the attention to the details inside and out of their cars are superior to american made cars. I considered other german products before buying my SRT-8 but they are far more expensive for what you get.

No kidding! The rear hatch of my jeep got so dirty yesterday, I actually went to spray it off twice yesterday at my local do it yourself carwash. It gets so dirty quickly that the reverse sensors and camera are useless in this weather, can't wait for the summer!

I seriously considered shaving the rear wiper and I would - if it was a show car. But even in the summer that window gets dirty quick.

I agree. The bang for the buck factor on this truck is great. Is crazy that for almost the same cost I could be in an Overland. Not putting the Overland down - depends what you want. But Brembos (noise and all) 420hp, Bilsteins, Dana, AMG tranny, the rims, front and rear bumpers, exhaust......blah blah blah....
