: Just got mine, slight problem already....
9900rpm 02-12-2007, 12:56 PM Hi everybody. Just picked mine up Friday night. Ordered it in the beginning of December. It was built on 2/1/07. '07 GCSRT8, all options, minus engine block heater. Did not come with this "SRT" sill plates, but I showed the dealer on a friend's GCSRT8 (went in a silver one to pick up my black one), and they agreed to get them for me. Picked it up with single digit miles. It's Monday, and I have 500 miles already.
Not sure if this is normal, but when I stop, there's a burning smell, like as if oil dripped on the exhaust manifold type of smell. I'm thinking it's either a leak, or maybe the truck is new, and the exhaust stuff burning off from the inside? It seems to smell on the inside of the truck. Popped the hood and the smell was there, but very slightly.
Thanks in advance.
timster 02-12-2007, 01:23 PM I had that burning smell too, but only the day I drove it home from the dealership. Everything was fine after that. If it continues, definitely bring it up with your dealership.
I think they quit putting the SRT sills on in '07, try searching someone else had the same issue. The smell, did you have it under coated? If not, check to see if anything is rubbing on the exhaust wires/tubes/etc. Keep your eye open for any drips, maybe the tranny, there have been a few w/bad o-ring seals that leaked a bit.
DRE77 02-12-2007, 01:42 PM Still waiting for an answer for my sill plates. I saw my sales rep on Friday afternoon and still no feedback. As for the oil smell, mine does the same. Probably just the coating on the exhaust line burning off. It did the same with my supercharged xterra a couple of years ago. It stops smelling after a while.
jlandbl 02-12-2007, 01:50 PM Here is a thread about the sills: http://www.cherokeesrt8.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2223&highlight=sills
Regarding the burning smell. Mine did the same thing for the first 500 miles or so. It was a non-issue. Just the brakes and exhaust breaking in.
Squilly D 02-12-2007, 02:04 PM Mine had the smell for the first few hundred miles but no problesm since then. Regarding the door sills - they quit installing them on most of the 2007 models (a few lucky ones seemed to have gotten them) but if your dealer is willing to put forth a little effort they can get those for you at no charge. Mine dealer did but it took a few weeks.
Se7en 02-12-2007, 02:09 PM Same here. It went away in a couple of days/couple hundred miles.
Mango 02-12-2007, 02:59 PM Smell is normal, it's the stickers buring off the exhaust and the coatings on the headers/etc. They are temperature senesative and take a while to "burn in".
Sill plates are in Kamasy's sig, dealer can order them and you can stick them on yourself.
9900rpm 02-12-2007, 10:50 PM Got under the truck tonight with a flashlight. It's leaking transmission fluid or something above the crossmember, above the exhaust. Wherever it's leaking from, it's dripping on the exhaust and on the crossmember. I guess it has to go back to the dealership. How disappointing.
Behairy 02-13-2007, 12:42 AM My friend used to have this smell on his 06 3 series and he went to the dealership and asked they told him that it comes from the run-flats ..
Hollywood619 02-13-2007, 03:02 AM Do a quick search. There was a thread about this leak being from a trans line that needed a simple o-ring replacement.
jaybruce 02-13-2007, 04:30 AM mine had the same smell for the first few hundred, dont worry.
9900rpm 02-13-2007, 10:50 AM Took the thing to the dealership this morning. I was under the truck last night because I actually saw smoke. Went down there with a flashlight and saw that the leak is above the bends on the exhaust pipe, in the front, almost exactly above the center part of the front crossmember. Looked in there and saw that something was dripping from up top, down onto the exhaust (hence the smell), and onto the crossmember. There was a good amount there. More than a few drops, but not pouring out. Anyway, it's at the dealership now in Manhattan. I let them know it may be the O rings, and told them thelocation of the problem. Hopefully they can get it back to me today.
I've never in life had a car go back to the dealership after only 621 miles.
JTSRT 02-13-2007, 06:45 PM New exhaust and catalytic converters can smell for a few hundred miles until they burn a little. Maybe what you are smelling.

Got the call yesterday afternoon from the dealership. I may be getting this wrong, but they told me 2 things are leaking. The transmission vehicle speed sensor O ring leaks (which is what I originally told them), and they told me the extention shaft rear seal was leaking as well. I think this is the part where the driveshaft goes into the transfer case/transmission. Anyway, they had the O ring, but not the seal. That was ordered. It came in today, and they will have it all done this afternoon. I hope the problems end there. The truck is too new for things to be going wrong already.
