Did any of you who have bought recently had to pay a gas guzzler tax? How much was it?

The Magnum does not get hit with the guzzler tax, its a station wagon.

It is $2000 on applicable vehicles. Consider yourself lucky and apply it to future mods.

Here in Jersey there is a gas guzzler tax on everything(cars and trucks included)
I just had to pay one for a 4.7 limited. I said 4.7. Its one half of one percent of the purchase price. Something like that. Gov't finding ways to reach into your pocket.

I could have sworn I paid for it on both SRT8s but I just looked at the GC window sticker and I guess I did not...

This is not correct. The gas guzzler tax is built into the sticker price of the car so you can't miss it. I live in NJ and there was not a gas guzzler tax. If you have paid it in the past, you got ripped off.

When did you buy yours? When I bought my srt last july I didn't have to pay. By Jan. 07 I had to pay. I raised a stink and was given a printout from the NJ tax website. Quite possible it started in Jan. But it's there for sure today.

I bought in June 2006.

"SUVs are not subject to the Gas Guzzler Tax. When the law was first enacted in 1978, SUVs and light trucks represented less than 25% of the vehicles on the road, and were considered primarily work vehicles. Over the last three decades, the use of SUVs has substantially changed, but the law hasn't. "
Here's a quote from Senate Report 109-082 "Highway Reauthorization and Excise Tax Simplification Act of 2005":
...vehicles defined in Title 49 C.F.R. sec. 523.5 (relating to light trucks) are exempt. These vehicles include those designed to transport property on an open bed (e.g., pick-up trucks) or provide greater cargo-carrying than passenger carrying volume including the expanded cargo-carrying space created through the removal of readily detachable seats (e.g., pick-up trucks, vans, and most minivans, sports utility vehicles and station wagons). Additional vehicles that meet the `non-passenger' requirements are those with at least four of the following characteristics: (1) an angle of approach of not less than 28 degrees; (2) a breakover angle of not less than 14 degrees; (3) a departure angle of not less than 20 degrees; (4) a running clearance of not less than 20 centimeters; and (5) front and rear axle clearances of not less than 18 centimeters each. These vehicles would include many sports utility vehicles.

Luxury & Fuel Inefficient Vehicle Surcharge

Effective July 15, 2006, new car dealerships are responsible for collecting a 0.4% surcharge on the new sale or lease of vehicles priced $45,000 or greater or on vehicles having an EPA rating of less than 19 miles per gallon. Payment of the surcharge which is due on the 20th of the month following each quarter, will be paid online. The first filing will be in October, 2006 for the third quarter.

I stand corrected. Can't believe NJ is going to be more strict than federal standards. I guess I bought just in time.

Yes it's a state tax not Federal. I had the same thing to say as you did. (Believe me). I got my Srt8 July 14, so I missed the Tax on that truck. But imagne my shock when I had to pay one on a "lowly" 4.7 limited.
