: Help! My SRT-8 is possessed!

Hey all,

My black SRT-8,with build date November 28th, is possessed! I've had it to the dealer TWICE and both times, they tell me it does not reproduce the problem and that the computer threw no codes. This is the sequence of events:

After starting the vehicle using the remote start, and letting it idle for around 10 minutes, I then enter the vehicle and drive away. After driving for a minute or two, I make a right turn out of my development. While making a right turn and accelerating normally, the truck starts to "Ding!" and flashes "Service 4WD SYSTEM" and "Service Park Assist System" and it cuts engine power!!! The vehicle stops responding to throttle input and it feels like it's going to shut off. This happened while I was turning onto a MAJOR ROAD with moderate traffic. It just stalls and revs slowly and limps around, for around 30 seconds. All I can do is roll to a stop and let the vehicle stop going crazy.

If the dealer cannot fix this problem, it's not out of the picture for me to request a new vehicle is it? This is a serious problem, and it's done this to me 3 times already, twice on major roadways.

Does anyone know what this might be?

That's bizarre that it's not throwing codes.

How often has it happened?

Does it happen if you don't use remote start?

Remote start has nothing to do with it. It will happen if I use it or not.

It happens during cold mornings, when turning the wheel and either going forward or backwards.

I am baffled, and very pissed off about this. Such a bizarre problem and it does not store codes.

Probably not much help, but when surface tension and I were coming back from LA 2 months ago, we got the
"......Service 4WD SYSTEM"

notice while on the freeway cruising at about 85 MPH. As soon as that notice would come on, it felt like the transmission would disengage for about 5-7 seconds, and then there was a sudden "jerk" like it was engaged again. This happened about 4-5 times on the trip and when it was taken in, the dealer also said he couldn't find anything wrong and there was no code logged on the system???

I would take a passenger and videotape the problem. Then take the videotape to your service manager and demand that, thrown codes or not, they figure this out.

If they give it back to you saying it's fixed, rinse and repeat.

At the same time I'd get real knowledgeable of my state's lemon laws...

That's really bizarre and really scary at the same time. God forbid you turn out thinking you have the throttle and she dies on you.

Aren't there some other threads on something similar pointing to a bad ground somewhere? I think someone will post about this and their dealer finally found the problem.

I had something similar happen only once. The conditions were not good and I thought the system was trying to figure where to send the power. Its almost as though it was confused as to which wheel should get the power so none of them got it - it felt like the vehicle was dragging and about to stall. I never got this in good conditions and I don't know what conditions were when this happened to you!

Thanks for the responses guys. I hope it's as simple as a bad ground wire, as this problem is so intermittent. It's been happening more frequently with the cold weather.

It's very frightening, since it happens with I pull into traffic!

Mango:

When this happens, look at the digital shift indicator on the dash. Are all the gears "highlighted" on the dash display. If so, there is a thread or two on this in the troubleshooting section of this forum. Another sign of this problem is that when you put the car into gear from neutral, does it transition into gear somewhat harshly instead of the normal smooth transition. Nobody has the solution that I could find, it's happened to me 5 times this early summer (when the weather was warm, not cold). I cleaned up all the grounds I could find and made sure all the connectors to the PCM were tight, and I've not had a problem for the past 3 months. kramsay1234 is correct that some have speculated that it is a bad grounding wire somewhere. SRT engineers have heard about this problem as well, but given the sporatic nature of the problem, have not been able to give an answer. For most others, when this problem occurs, a simple restart of the engine resolves the matter, though for me, it required a "10 minute" cool-down before the restart before the problem disappeared. Never had a fault code as well.

Hope that helps

one last observation ,when I had the problem, the Dashhawk display was "haywire", making me wonder about a bad pcm connection and/or wiring.

Hmmm

come to think of it... I have had similar bizarre episodes. One time on the way to the track I was at around 100mph and it just started to go into limp mode with the service 4wd system flash and dissappear. Yesterday I had warmed up the Jeep before leaving the house... 30 -45 sec's ... outside temp was 108°F. More to cool the car down than warm up :D I started down the road and it was like the Jeep totally died. No messages.. just phhhmmmp. When I had all but come to a stop I must have had my foot down on the gas because she leaped up and got me right up to speed. I've had other strange issues but always explained them away.....

My dealer had to replace my entire shifter mechanism that sits on top of the transmission. Solved all the problems.
