: Chrome Trim Permanent Spotting?
z28plus 02-07-2007, 09:42 AM From the bad winter here in denver and all the chemicals on the roads, my chrome trim on the srt8 has permanent water spots on it all over the truck. I tried a chrome polish and that made it better but not great. Seems to affect the side door pieces and the rear piece along the rear bumper. Anyone else having this problem?
That's certainly a bummer. I don't really have a whole lot of info to offer, but I'd recommend against any kind of polish. Poloishes typically are abrasives, to some degree. The chrome trim is plastic, not metal, and isn't real chrome, and is also not cleared. So using an abrasive will damage it more than help it.
It sounds as though the chemicals have eaten into the plastic's finish. I can tell you that for a few hundred bucks, you can get new trim pieces, but I know that isn't the ideal solution.
Good luck.

I just went to their site and am going to order some of that for my home.
However..... that isn't for plastic, and the chrome trim in question is plastic. BKF would ruin it.

Okay I know you all have concerns with polishing the chrome...But I have used a product that works absolutely awesome....Think of it this way....the spots are not going to go away by themselves...
Go to autozone and get mothers billet aluminum polish....
VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU GET THE BILLET POLISH....not the regular....
get 2 very soft cloths. Apply the polish and rub til the spots come out...
After you are done be sure to apply a few coats of wax. I use this stuff and only this stuff. It can make polished aluminum look like chrome.
I saved a brand new set of wheels this way... I drove with them in a winter storm and forgot to wipe them down before I stored them. Between the salt and brake dust.... they were pretty bad....
After I polished them I never had the problem come back, nor any other problems....
I suggest you try it before going out and buying new parts....If you are worried, try it on a small area first...
You dont want this

Have you tried this on the SRT plastic trim or just wheels? I'd be highly suspect of using any kind of polish (except a true plastic polish) on the faux chrome trim that we have.

Street WK 02-07-2007, 11:13 AM ndm is right. that is the best stuff i have EVER used in my life... i use it on my 22" wheels lips and the front chrome trim on my srt8 bumper...
i had acid spots on my wheels and it took them right off!!! ill go take a picture
OurZoo 02-07-2007, 11:33 AM I don't know about Bar Keepers Friend on plastic, but it's the best stuff in the world to clean your high end cookware with.
If NDM and Street have used these polishes on plastic (I'm still amazed you guys polish plastic center caps :) ), then take their word for it. But I will still NEVER use an abrasive on on anything non metal.

I feel you... I will say this, I would never get into a habit of using it over and over. I would only use it if you have to....And thats why I would recommend keeping it waxed/ Protected. This way most of the harmful stuff cant stick....
When I get the SRT 8 I will remember this..
I've been detailing cars for a long time, and it just kind of goes against the norm to use any abrasive on (uncleared) plastic. That's why I was a little taken aback when I read these posts.

Not my experience at all, but YMMV.

Hollywood619 02-07-2007, 12:06 PM I you have never tried it, Meguire's "Plastix" works very well. If you have something like a Porter Cable 7424 you can use it with that if you tape off the surrounding paint.

That is the kind of product to use here. It's designed for plastic, and not the same as using a metal polish at all. Nice job Hollywood.
And also to agree wih Hollywood..... if you don't have a P/C-- get one! THE best investment you can make in care car imo.

OurZoo 02-07-2007, 03:47 PM Porter Cable 7424 I believe is the one I have. Definitely a very nice addition to anyones stable of detailing equipment.

I live in Colorado springs and while I don't drive mine in the snow, or often at all lately. I have noticed that the chrome strip on the bottom of the front bumper is starting to bubble. I will bring it up at my next dealer vist.
kramsay1234 02-07-2007, 04:13 PM I think I am going home to wax my bumper and side chrome. I also heard rainx keeps the elements off.
In Toronto they use salt like it is going out of style. I think they put it down just to give the city workers something to do.

Medical cannabis (http://medicalmarijuana.us/)
Salt is illegal to use ont he streets here in the Seattle area, however I think the chemicals they use are probably as bad for our cars.
Also-- you could just paint the plasti-chrome :) It eliminates this problem all together.
kramsay1234 02-07-2007, 04:29 PM looking at the blackout trim tape Tony posted about a week or so ago for the side window trim. Looks great on a black truck. Still like the front and back bumper trim and the body side moulding in the "fake" chrome.

Here in Denver they use a de-icer called magcloride.

I don't polish my centercaps. They are black ;)
The chrome strip on the srt8 bumper only. If it is bad, oh well... it's just a lease :)
Hollywood619 02-08-2007, 07:14 AM A lot of guys over on e46fanatics.com use the 3M black-out tape to make their cars look more M3-like. Check out the site and do a search for it for opinions.
kramsay1234 02-08-2007, 09:34 AM Thanks. I had to join the forum, but at least confirmed I can get the trimbrite tape at Canadian Tire which is handy for me. For $5 or whatever it is there is no risk IMO.
