Yay or Na. Lets vote here on are they really important or what. Please give your reasons for your answer.

I say NA- They would have built one into the engine if they were that important. The engineers know what they are doing. I hope!

This has been discussed multiple times. It's not done that way from the factory for emmissions reasons. Its either you leave it that way and burn excess oil through your motor or put a catch can on to collect it and keep it from entering the motor and pulling timing.

Haha 800 miles on my rig and I have brake squeal...I don't even brake hard either

^^ It has something to do with the red calipers. The fix is finding somebody local to swap black calipers with. Oh, look at that, I'm in NY. ;)

Oil is a detonant. If you burn it, the motor is more likely to knock and the PCM will pull timing in response. The SRT-8 is built by the bean counters and tree huggers. A $5 catch can is too much cost to them.

Actually I like my black calipers. :D Mine don't even squeal, so they must have been made on a Wednesday. However, I think the red looks best on silver.

Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question, but what exactly does "pulling timing" do? Is this something we want to avoid?

crazy thing is, even with a can you'll still burn oil. lol cold start ups i ALWAYS smell oil burning initially.

How many miles are on your 426? Sounds like some oil is seeping past the guides.

Well - like I said, maybe it was a stupid question :bangin:

I figured someone may be able to explain it to some of us "non-experts" here on the forum. While I understand timing is where your power is made, I wasn't entirely sure what effects pulling timing has on the engine itself, or if there were any long-term dangers associated with this...

no long term effects from timing being pulled, but the oil does pool up nicely in the bottom of the intake and makes a mess of the tops of the valves and intake ports. If you drive your SRT as a DD and never hit the track a catch can will never make a difference you will see......plus you will have one more thing to empty and stay on top of......anyone in it for the performance.....IMO.....mandatory!Especially with aftermarket cam and heads......the higher cylinder pressures will force more oil through the PCV system.

My motor is stock except for catback and Volant intake. I installed a a BT catch can before a 600 mile trip, and when I returned, there was a pool of oil about 1/2 cm deep at the bottom of the can. I'm now sold on it.
