: I need more head room - Can I order a loaded SRT8 and delete the sunroof?

I have always loved the SRT8.
In order to get SRT option group I (and II) you must get the sunroof.
There is not enough head room for me with a sunroof. With the seat all the way down, my head still hits the roof unless I tilt my head to the right into the sunroof opening.

If I could delete the sunroof and still get option groups I and II and Nav . . . I would order one right now.

Can this be done?

You need a 300C SRT-LOL not sure

Recline the seat.

Actually though that was the exact reason I got the SRT8 over the TBSS, because I couldn't fit in the TBSS with a sunroof, which is required to get Navi.

I do drive the SRT with the seat reclined quite a bit though.

I love the look of the 300C SRT . . . but I need the all-wheel drive in Minnesota.

I did recline the seat, but I end up looking at the B-pillar and would need the steering wheel to telescope out more. I moved the seat down and back, but my head still bangs against the edge of the sunroof. If I drive with my head tipped to the right, I can use the opening for more room, but that gets uncomfortable.

Although I know guys my size (6' 3") that fit in most cars, I must have more torso length and head size because I don't fit in a lot of vehicles with a sunroof. You might assume I would fit in a large Tahoe or Escalade, but with a sunroof . . . no head room. Without a sunroof, no problem.

They make the seats so high (for little soccer moms I assume) that they do not go down enough (the seats, not the soccer moms) for me.

Chargers and 300's are both available with AWD. Idk about SRT8 AWD, but R/T, and 300C for sure.

Good Luck, hubby is 6'4" and we have a sunroof in our Charger, no problem for him.

this doesnt make any sense... how would NOT getting a sunroof give you more head room?!?! if anything it gives you more (it isnt lower then the roof itself)... its not like you would have two little bumps like a viper has...

what i am saying is if you dont get a sunroof i dont think the liner would be any more thin...

The headliner is lower due to all the mechanism for the sunroof.

is it REALLY...i dont think you would even squeeze another 1inch out of it...

i dont know man ive seen people that are 6'5" in it before and it isnt that bad...

now when my friend that is 6'7" drove my mustang... that was a funny site... his knee was pretty much up to the window!... he had a 99GT for years though... i guess time takes it toll on the body... being 30+ vs 25 and squeezing into a 2 seater probably makes a difference...

Yep, I'm only 6'1" with a long torso and I have to have the seat all the way back, back side of the seat bottom all the way down and the seat reclined back pretty far to keep some room above my head.
Very comfortable though.....I can reach the wheel fine (my wingspan is longer than I am tall).

If I sit up too straight I will hit my head on bumps.

well i trust the man would know himself whether or not he needs more headroom, it doesnt matter how others fit in their truck does it? no haha, its completely unrelated, an apple aint an orange even if they are both round so the fact is this guy if he wants it to work out, is going to have to do some customization or know someone who can. Ripping of the seats and roofs and headliners may be required but im sure a roof extension could be done or a seat drop could be too. It depends on how bad you want this rig, if so it can be done, if not, then get a bigger car, its all a personal decision ;)

Thanks ResumeSpeed, I did not think it could be done.

Yes, I can fit if I recline beyond my comfort range, but I was hoping for better.

There is actually more headroom in the vast majority of vehicles if you choose the one without the sunroof. I test drove an Escalade with and without a sunroof -- the difference is night and day. Unfortunately, it drove like a barge and there are currently only two in the country with a heated steering wheel and no sunroof. Yes, I know the Jeep does not have the heated steering wheel yet, but the remote start might help.

I ordered my X5 without the sunroof and must be spoiled by the comfort. Maybe I can wait a little longer and Jeep will add the heated steering wheel, 6.4L engine, and allow me to delete the sunroof . . .

For now, I will go back to my Jeep dealer and try to perfect my gangsta lean. Wish me luck.

I would think they would be willing to do whatever the customer wanted if they are ordering it from the factory... What does a sunroof have to do with a navigation anyways?

You know, I'm 6'2" and my head (short hair) scrapes the headliner also. It really is quite annoying.

Now, when I sit on the passenger side... No scrape at all.... Maybe just swap seats unless the floor is raised on the opposite side (which it shouldn't be with regard to export compatibility).

Of course there is the problem of reaching your power seat switches... :D

If you like the Jeep enough, I'm sure you could drop the seat lower, It might mean losing the power and travel, but if it is for YOU to drive, set the seat where you want it, and fab up some brackets. I did this in my old Vette, and It was funny watching Short Valets or Service techs, and such trying to drive it.

I am surprised it took this long for someone to spot that joke. Unfortunately, once you get married . . .

I did test drive the X6 yesterday. The X6 and the Jeep SRT8 have a similar "beastly" driving experience. Unfortunately, the X6 also lacks headroom, but I did lean enough to enjoy the ride.

I have not gotten back in a Jeep yet, but I will soon.

The X6 is pointless. All the negatives of an SUV, with none of the positives. At least with the negatives the Jeep has some postives, like cargo space.

Yeah, I have this issue too. I'm as far back as I can be to use the controls, but I have to do something really ridiculous when I wear an SA2005 helmet. I wouldn't mind if they fixed this in the next version. I've been thinking about aftermarket seats, etc.

Exactly. Most people fit just fine. Unfortunately, headroom does limit vehicle choice for some of us. I am not complaining; I am used to this problem. I was simply checking to see if anybody knew if the SRT8 could have all the options without the sunroof requirement. ResumeSpeed confirmed my research . . . it cannot even be special ordered without a sunroof if you want the other options:(.

BAWAHAHAHA! I am reading this thread for the first time and I died laughing as my GF is wonder WTF. And it took 4 pages and a lady to catch this...LOL

Anyways, I am only 5'10 and the only gripe I have is I can not see thru that large arse rear view mirror. Not as big as a prob. for Bigfoot, but I am ready to figure a way to lower that drivers seat, even if it means loosing all the fancy smanchy controls.

Yeah, I was amazed it took so long and the guys missed it.

I have wanted a Jeep GC SRT8 ever since its debut. Unfortunately, there has only been one new SRT8 in Minnesota the past 3 months and it is a silver '08. I'll go for another test drive and lean back again when I get the chance. If I can find a comfortable position, I will need to order an '09 since it must be BLACK. I'm just not sure I want to give up my heated steering wheel. It really is wonderful on those below 0 days.

Wish me luck.

I know this is an old thread, and I am new to the site... but this is my only beef with the Jeep.

Did anyone find a resolution to this?

You guys who are over 6'3 and fit with no problem must be looking out the back windows and not sitting properly in the seat. :P Proper seating position allows your arms to overlap so that the inside of your elbows can touch each other in a turning maneuver. I'm not a driving instructor or anything, but anyone who likes to drive aggressively knows why this is important. Those of us with 06-07 models also do not have telescopic steering wheels. I refuse to believe that you can sit upright and not feel the roof touching your hair. @ 6'3 myself I can't fit my hand between the ceiling and my head. I just seems that no matter how I position my seat my knee is either hitting the key (which I also hate), my head is rubbing the headliner or my seat is reclined so far I can barely reach the nav buttons. I'm sorry, but I like to sit up in my vehicles, and having just come from a F-350, I was spoiled by the headroom.

I'm going to take a closer look and see if I can just pull the seat out, remove some steel, re-weld and lower it onto the floor... I'd love to have another inch above my head. Hoping someone here has a less invasive approach.

My friend, who is only 6'5 could barely sit in the Jeep, let alone sit and drive comfortably.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

I have 2 cousins that are 6'7" and 6'5", the only vehicles they can comfortably fit in are full size trucks unfortunately.
I'm 6'0" and the Jeep is a little snug but comfortable for me. My helmet hits the roof, but thats different. I wear a size 13 shoe so my toes hit the underside of the dash when I switch from the brake to the gas, kinda annoying. My Superduty has tons of interior room.

I'm 6'3" and have exactly this same problem. Can't see traffic lights without bending down. Also can't see most of the speedometer because the top of the steering wheel blocks it. I love the seat itself, but the overall body positioning I find myself in while driving my Jeep is by far the worst part about it. It really tweaks my hip if I drive a lot as well.
