: 80mph @ 3000rpm
FastSRT8GC 02-04-2007, 01:10 PM I was cruising along and this had me a bit concerned. Maybe i am used to my F350 but this seemed a bit high for such a high HP vehicle. This thing should be able at 2200 or so. Am i going crazy or does everyone find this to be a bit high.

The same rear gearing that gets us to 60 in 4.6-4.8 seconds is responsible for that.

Black_SRT8 02-04-2007, 01:31 PM Totally normal. If we had a 6 speed, the fuel economy would improve, but the acceleration would be slightly hindered.
FastSRT8GC 02-04-2007, 01:33 PM yea, i figured as much. Would have been nice to have a taller 5th gear. Not that it would be hard for the jeep to power through it
OurZoo 02-04-2007, 01:47 PM I noticed that the first week driving her on the freeway.
SI_G35Coupe 02-04-2007, 01:52 PM this is the only reason i haven't pulled the trigger on the Jeep already
right now i drive 80 miles round trip on my commute every day, and the gas bill for a tank of 93 is bad enough with my 3.5L V6.
i don't understand why they couldn't give the Jeep a taller 4th/5th gear arrangement. i don't think that would have had an effect on the 0-60 times.

Or a 6 speed auto.
I do about 60 miles round trip. I just look at its fuel consumption as a cost of entry to drive the thing. I'd be a lot happier if the tank was larger, and I wasn't fueling up several times a week.

OurZoo 02-04-2007, 01:59 PM My commute is 42 miles a day for work and I usually end up filling up every 4 days. Sitting in traffic in this thing is depressing! :(
Mango 02-04-2007, 02:00 PM I have you guys beat. I do about 120miles a day driving to and from work. The gas bill was outrageous making the trip with my Jeep, so I bought a 2007 VW GTI as a daily driver. =P Love the 30+mpg! That car will cruise at 80 turning about 2000rpm in 6th gear.
OurZoo 02-04-2007, 02:02 PM That's a lot of driving! With the Jeep you'd be at the gas station every other day.

I can always daily drive my old BMW and get about 25 mpg, but the ride is a bit bone jarring:

Mango 02-04-2007, 02:08 PM LOL! Awesome car Alex!
I was stopping to fill up every other day during the first 2 weeks with the black SRT-8. The GTI is a riot to drive everyday, and would you believe I was treated better at the VW dealership than I was at my Jeep dealer. Not to mention, the VW guys were so excited to see the SRT-8 and all the salesman were asking for rides and if they could sit in it LOL!
They gave me GTI shirts, a hat, keychain, and the "fast"! It was cool, definetly a nice bunch of guys. Plus, the sales manager called me the next day to thank me for the business and gave me his cell # to call if I ever had problems!
I think it's time for Jeep/Chrylser to step up if you ask me.

No doubt. I owned an '04 M3 before the Jeep and the level of service provided by the BMW dealership is light years beyond the Chrysler/Jeep dealership I bought from.
It's not just the free maintenance and free loaners; I understand I paid for that with the BMW. It's more the attitude about making sure I'm happy and doing whatever they have to in order to make that happen.

palo alto dave 02-04-2007, 08:09 PM I when to LA at speeds around 75 to 80, got 16mpg going down and 15.9mpg
coming home to the Bay. The 3000rpm just seem right for the SRT8. I would love to see a 6speed overdrive for better fuel economy. But till they offer one, I be happy with this setup................
synoil 02-04-2007, 08:46 PM Heck my '97 Yukon with 2:73 gears, 260 hp would get
14mpg in town and 17 on the highway. That was with
the entire drivetrain synthetic lubes.
For the performance I see no problem with our milage.
What does concern me is the high oil pressures. Like
I'm seeing 80psi gently accellerating when the engine
is cold. It goes down of course when the oil gets hot.
High oil pressure is a sign of resistance to flow, not
necessarily a good thing.

NitroCrzy 02-04-2007, 08:59 PM Thank god gas is cheap here in Saudi. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing even tighter gearing if it improved the 1/4 mile times. 13 sec's stock though is very impressive!
:D
SI_G35Coupe 02-05-2007, 10:44 AM i guess i really can't complain either... for the price of this vehicle some compromises had to be made. i guess i'm just used to imports where you can build the motor and strap on a turbocharger, giving substantial power AND still allowing for somewhat decent mileage. of course, a motor like that doesn't give you the brutal low end torque that the 6.1 makes.
i'm sure they used the tranny that they did because it could handle the 420ft/lbs of torque and b/c it was already in the parts bin. i'm sure that as more high end parts trickle down from the MB division, we will see upgrades/changes to the tranny probably at the same time they move to the 6.4L motor)
anyways, while i will probably cry everytime i hit the pumps, i will be grinning from ear to ear while i drain the tank.
